I think that being more aware of my carbs, not focusing on my carb intake it could help me. I have low blood sugar levels and eating sweets or breads always seem to set me off. By set me off I mean I literally want to pass out after eating them, zoned out and low energy.

The bolded is exactly how I feel after eating regular birthday cake and ice cream, even after a well balanced meal.

Bread made from flour makes me sleepy or bingey. I now eat bread made from sprouted grains. All the supermarkets near me carry brands like Ezekial/Food for Life in their freezer sections.

I count calories first and tweaked my macros from MFP's default to reduce carbs a little and raise protein a little.
