Should I do KETO?

Hi guys,I've been reading alot about Keto and feel like it would suit me well as carbs are my weakness.
I recently got blood work done.I took the Oral glucose fasting test,my fasting glucose was in the 80s,after 2 hours it dropped to under 50...Which was not good.
My insulin levels all registered normal except for my fasting insulin which is 1.8(low)
Stats; 6'1/180/27y/m
For some reason I'm paranoid that I might have diabetes and keto COULD cause keto acidosis,do these numbers indicate possibility of type 1 or is it okay for me to try keto?
TL;DR
Should I do KETO?

What does your doctor who did the blood work say?2

If you're asking questions like "could I have type ONE diabetes", I'd say it's time to talk to a doctor.4 -

I wish I could but can't at the moment.
From what I've read most type 1 diabetics dont produce insulin and I definitely do so that's why I'm curious.
I want to do KETO just need some guidance
Thanks

No idea whether you SHOULD or not, but I also urge you to see a doctor!
I did keto successfully for a few months and fell off the wagon and I'm back on again. I'm honestly feeling like I may just switch to moderately low carb. Keto is so strict with keeping your carbs below a certain level that it eliminates foods that I love (fruits being a big one). I can go without the bread and pasta usually, but for me, I didn't like the instant gain when I got knocked out of ketosis and the fact that I couldn't cheat when I needed to. It works great for some people and I'm doing it now, but doing a lot of thinking about what makes me happy. I lost a bunch of weight initially just counting calories and it worked just fine. Keto helped me lose a few more pounds but gained them back as soon as I stopped following the diet. It takes dedication and most days I have it, but other days I just want an apple or a piece of pizza.
Good luck with whatever you decide!0 -

Your fasting BG was good. Not diabetic. Not type 1 or 2. If you had T1D, your fasting BG would be high because you would not be producing the insulin needed to (lower) regulate your blood glucose levels. You are making insulin otherwise your BG would not have come down after the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).
Your BG did fall quite a bit... Try looking up reactive hypoglycemia. I have that. Basically my body made too much insulin so my BG is brought down too low. Ketosis did help this for me because I was no longer reliant on glucose for sugar. No more shakes or light headedness when my BG fell too fast.
Sometimes reactive hypoglycemia can be a sign of insulin resistance. If this is true for you, then I would guess it is very very early since your insulin is still low. Once a person develops insulin resistance, insulin levels rise and insulin does not work as well as it used to (to lower BG) and BG starts to stay elevated.... You do not appear to have that issue.
Also, ketosis will NEVER cause ketoacidosis. As I understand it, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) occurs when the typ1 diabetics do not take insulin so their blood glucose continues to rise. The body can not use that glucose though (without insulin) so it starts making ketones for fuel. The ketones made are over 10 times higher than a very low carb person would experience. And the low carber would not have high BG levels too. It's the combination of the two (high BG and too high ketones) that causes DKA.
T1D's often have better BG control when eating keto. It helps reduce the need for insulin, and makes BG easier to balance.
If you wish to try keto because carbs are your krytonite, go for it. I don't think you need to from a metabolic stand point though.
I'm not medically trained, so take everything I wrote with a grain of salt.
Good luck.2 -

Thanks for the extremely long and detailed response,I really appreciate that.
The main reason I want to do keto is because of repeated bouts of hypoglycemia that is pretty scary and it happens after I eat a bunch of carbs/sugar
And the only way to fix it is drink some Gatorade or sugary drinks and I'm tired of the cycle.
Once I eat any kind of carb I just want more and I keep eating them.
Everything I've read on Keto says that it removes or greatly reduces carb/sugar cravings and that it eliminates constant hunger which are the 2 biggest problems I have.

I have no opinion on whether you should do keto or not (other than if you are concerned about a medical problem, see a doctor pronto). On the whole I think if someone is interested in keto they might as well try it.
However, from what you say here it really doesn't sound like you've tried just eating a moderate carb diet concentrating on nutrient dense carbs (especially since a lot of the junk food carbs people eat are really about half fat). You can avoid eating "a bunch of carbs/sugar" in a sitting on their own without cutting them out or down to keto levels, obviously.
I am eating a moderately low carb diet now (lots of vegetables, some fruit, dairy, whole food starches like tubers and legumes, occasional oatmeal, pasta or bread on rarer occasions), and really like it, since this just seems to allow for the mix of foods I like best. But for a while last year I was eating a higher carb diet (50%) that was still basically nutrient dense carbs, and it wasn't any harder to control hunger or not get that up and down feeling you get when relying on carbs for energy (which I used to do if low on sleep and not paying attention).
Not saying this will be you -- some do find that they have hunger issues that go away when they do keto or even just low carb -- but so many assume they have an issue with carbs or sugar that requires keto when they don't even try other things like eating a healthful balanced diet or reducing/eliminating snacking or cutting way down on junk foods without cutting them out or eliminating anything. I also have found personally that having a filling diet for me is more about getting enough protein and fiber (through vegetables mainly, plus legumes, some fruit) than any particular macros.1 -

I would just like to point out that there is actually a thing as ADULT ONSET TYPE 1.... normally referred to as Type 1.5. And as a person who has had someone in their life diagnosed with this and been in doctors appointments and clinics to have it explained to them. It is a thing.
BUT OP doesn't have it. Just felt like maybe instead of judging people should educate.1 -

Ketosis definitely solved my reactive hypoglycemia BUT I this was after I developed insulin resistance. During my OGTT my FBG started close to a 6, it went up to a 9 and then dropped to a 4 something before 2 hours was up. I never went as low as you. I just experienced shakes, crankiness and the occassional fainting (I have low BP) because my BG dropped so fast and not because I was actually low.
All that being said, my BG can go low now but because I am relying on ketones for my fuel, I feel fine... but I am never as low as you. I hit the 3's (mid 60s-70s) and that is it. Because you actually go low, I would be much more careful. (T1Ds only go low when they've injected too much insulin.)
If you decide to do ketosis, I would consider adding MCTs or coconut oil to your diet first. MCTs turn to ketones readily. Even those on on a higher carb diet will make ketones when eating MCTs. You need to build up MCT tolerance too. Start with teaspoons f tablespoon a day. Too much too fast will cause diarrhea.
So consider starting MCTs or coconut oil then cut back on carbs. I wouldn't go too fast in your case. Also add salt (3000-5000 mg sodium per day or 1-2 teaspoons salt) to keep up your BP and avoid electrolyte imbalance.
I would also go to the Low Carber Daily MFP group. They can probably help. Good luck. http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/394-low-carber-daily-forum-the-lcd-group0
