Detox Cleanse - Headache Migrane Help

Low carb gives me nasty headaches. It could be a combination of a lot of little things happening all at once - cold turkey on the caffeine, low carb, low calories, increased exercise, etc.0

If there were so many toxins in your body that your liver and kidneys need a "break" in order to filter them all out, you'd need a hospital, not a cleanse.
Please explain why cancer, food allergies, and many other diseases are almost nonexistent among the Amish.
Haven't researched the health of the Amish but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that lack of diagnosis is a big part of the equation.
Now you please explain what "toxins" have to do with cancer and food allergies.8 -

This.
I'd also be willing to bet that genetics plays a part.3 -
thestoryofangelina wrote: »Hi all. My PT has upped my fitness routine to include a detox cleanse, where I am eating natural, lean foods, no sugar, no caffeine, no alcohol, no processed anything. Basically the diet is fruit, veggies, protein with a carb in the evening at supper (sweet potato, wholegrain rice only). Minus veg I am averaging around 1100-1200 calories a day. This diet is quite similar to the Paleo diet.
Anyhow, where I need help... First 5 days were bad, no energy, etc but I have gotten used to the foods and am not as hungry anymore. However, I am on day 10 with a headache, and it is only getting worse. Two days ago it crossed into migraine territory. Drinking more water is not helping. I was sick to my stomach this morning because of the pain and even with having a high pain tolerance, I am not sure how much more of this I can take.
My trainer says after our 10 day cleanse, we will add in some things but no caffeine. I imagine this is what is causing the migraine, but my question is - is it worth it and have any of you experienced this before? I had 2 coffees a day with skim milk and no sugar - for reference. Between last week's no energy falling asleep at my desk fog and this week's migraine from hell, it is effecting my performance at work, which is really not good. And I should also add I haven't gone to the gym as usual either because of the effects of all of this. Especially the migraine.
Any insight, help, tips, etc would be appreciated.
All you need to lose weight is a MODERATE CALORIE DEFICIT. If you want to improve your health with food, then just make sure the majority of foods you eat are closer to whole foods and meet your micronutrient profile.
Caffeine is fine.
This "program" is nothing more than a cookie cutter program copied by many PT's who aren't trained well or at all in nutrition. Especially when they mention the word "detox". No science classes (physiology or biology) cover any food or drink for "detoxing" the body.
Use the PT as a trainer, not a dietician or nutritionist.

Certain cultures are lower propensities to certain diseases while others have higher risks (i.e., African Americans have a higher link to type II diabetes). They are also very active and eat goods they grow. But if you arent going to live their life or have their genetics, then you cant compare yourself to them. Cleanses do not have a scientific backing.6 -

I gotta go show this to my friend who volunteers at an area hospital. She drives patients in for appointments, including cancer treatments. She needs to know her Amish patients are obviously frauds, because real Amish don't get sick!
That's freaking HILARIOUS! Thanks, I was having a rough day and really needed the laugh8 -

So why not go be Amish instead of a bogus "cleanse?"
Because most people would rather have cars and cell phones than avoid cancer.0 -
For some people, cleanses can be beneficial, as long as they're done well.Since this cleanse is based on eating whole foods rather than a fasting cleanse, it sounds like one of the better ones. Please keep in mind that the ultimate purpose of cleansing is not weight loss, but based on the idea that while your body does have awesome filtering systems, they weren't designed to handle air pollution, pesticides and hundreds of chemical additives in our foods, heavy metals in our beauty supplies. Cleansing is meant to give your body's natural filters time to rest and catch up on processing the poisons in your system by exposing yourself to the easiest to process foods only in their most natural state. There are a lot of people who will tell you that cleanses are useless or even harmful, and some cleanses are, but a whole foods based cleanse is a wonderful thing if your goal is overall health.

The country is nice, but I'd never want to be a farmer. Nor would I want to live the life of a stock market manager.
If you know anything about cancer, heredity has more to do with it than actual choice of lifestyle. That's not to say it can't be attained through risk lifestyle (IE smoking, etc.), but eating food in moderation isn't a likely source of getting any cancer.

I'll probably get yelled at for this but no coffee..Is the trainer crazy? I use coffee to keep me from feeling so hungry. It is one of the keys to my weight loss. It is a very low calorie treat. I suspect after 10 days the headaches aren't from the lack of caffeine but from the lack of carbs. I know my sister has that issue. Each of us has to discover what works for us. I hope you figure it all out and that you feel better soon.1

I'm 45 and only started drinking coffee in the last year, I was/still am a lifelong tea lover. Coffee gives me an energy boost and staves off the mid afternoon munchies, it has been a positive addition to my diet.1 -

So what's the point of doing a "cleanse" unless you are also going to leave your car in the garage, power down your phone, not wear makeup or moisturizer, and only wear organically grown cotton? And wear a surgical mask to filter out toxins in the air? And you would have to plan waaaaay in advance so you could grow your own food, since the fact that you are eating just veggies, fruits, and lean proteins doesn't mean you aren't eating environmental toxins, right?2 -

With that being said, if your salt levels are too low that can cause dehydration or water toxicity which could be one possible cause of headaches. If it's caffeine related, talk to your trainer about 1-2 cups of green tea per day for the remainder of your cleanse which could ease your symptoms with a low dose of gentler caffeine. Lastly, the length of your cleanse is important. Eating at this much of a deficit for more than a couple weeks is unhealthy. If it's more than a couple more days, increase your protein and fat sources (adding a couple eggs might be a good idea) and maybe more high carb fruit/veggie options.
I do feel better eating primarily whole foods as opposed to the SAD I had prior to getting sick in the 90s. I grow fruit and vegetables using organic methods. I pay attention to the ingredients in my personal care and cleaning products. I support brands like Seventh Generation because I approve of their value of sustainability.
However, since cleansing is usually pretty gimmicky, supporting it gets a lot of pushback here.0 -

You absolutely have the right to your opinion, no matter how scientifically and factually wrong it is.

They shouldn't lead the uninformed down the path to misinformation and untruth. Other than that, opine away.8 -
The headache is caffeine withdrawal. First time I cut coffee, mine lasted for 3 weeks. This is my guess anyway.
The next time I did it, I worked myself slowly down to no coffee. From 3 cups to 2 cups to 1.5 cups to 1 cup to 0.5 cup to 0.25 cup (cutting some of these with decaf) to just decaf to nothing. Next to no headaches.
Also interestingly... the third time I cut coffee... I did it right after a trip to Europe where all they had was espresso based drinks. I had almost NO withdrawal at all even though I cut those cold turkey when I got back (and didn't start up on coffee again). I wonder if it was such a different amount of caffeine or if the ingredients were somehow different... or if I just drank enough water through the trip that it helped. No idea what happened there.
Are you sleeping alright? Try to get enough but not too much lol.0 -

The caffeine withdrawal was easier after the espresso habit because espresso is made with very darkly roasted beans and the more you roast coffee beans, the less caffeine survives the process - that's one of the major reasons that breakfast blends in the US are mostly light roasted beans (more caffeine to create a bigger kick in the morning).2 -

The bolded part is false. There is no legitimate science to support this. Only fearmongering. And if it we're true by what mechanism do detoxes and cleanses work to rid you of the always unamed toxins?7 -
I have a hard time believing that because I support the idea of ohmiactualgosh eating only whole, natural foods for a short period of time, I must be an uneducated bumpkin. Obviously since I am on an electronic device to post on these forums, i weigh convenience and general quality of life upgrades highly enough to not recommend uprooting your entire lifestyle to avoid 100% of all contaminants everywhere. But the fact that eating whole foods is being attached purely because it has the word "cleanse" is completely ridiculous. Yes, I understand that there are many many terrible, worthless, horrible, awful cleanses out there. The word has been used and abused in a thousand different ways. But condoning a couple weeks of meat and vegetables isn't a crime against humanity.0
