Detox Cleanse - Headache Migrane Help

Oh I know those caffeine withdrawal headaches! I had a (mad I'd say) dermatologist who told me that, to get rid of the warts I had on my fingers, I should cut out coffee and something else, cannot remember what it was but I didn't consume it anyway, and swallow some globules she refused to tell me what they were. For some reason - I am obviously madder than her - I went along with it. After three days I was dizzy, headachey, walking into things and in tears. My friend took me to the nearest café and, two coffees later, I was laughing. Never doing that again! Also, when I get a migraine (such as two days ago) I desperately need coffee to calm the pain. And a WHOLE Terry's chocolate orange and a bucketful of Coke to boot - cannot explain the science behind that but hey, it works!
Enjoy your coffee girl!
Oh and I got rid of the warts by getting some special anti-wart plasters from the chemist's!

PS. Listen to your body. It knows what is good for it.0

1,200 calories a day for a 310 pound person is downright negligent. Not only is your PT incompetent, he/she is an a**hole.
Find a way to graciously relieve yourself of their services and seek out a more reasonable approach to weight loss.3 -

If there were so many toxins in your body that your liver and kidneys need a "break" in order to filter them all out, you'd need a hospital, not a cleanse.
Please explain why cancer, food allergies, and many other diseases are almost nonexistent among the Amish.
Being Amish is a way of life, not a diet. No cigarettes,no alcohol,no multiple sexual partners (which increases women's risk of cervical cancer )....3 -
I have a hard time believing that because I support the idea of ohmiactualgosh eating only whole, natural foods for a short period of time, I must be an uneducated bumpkin. Obviously since I am on an electronic device to post on these forums, i weigh convenience and general quality of life upgrades highly enough to not recommend uprooting your entire lifestyle to avoid 100% of all contaminants everywhere. But the fact that eating whole foods is being attached purely because it has the word "cleanse" is completely ridiculous. Yes, I understand that there are many many terrible, worthless, horrible, awful cleanses out there. The word has been used and abused in a thousand different ways. But condoning a couple weeks of meat and vegetables isn't a crime against humanity.
No one is attacking a whole foods diet. Just the idea that a cleanse or detox through whole foods will somehow magically remove unnamed toxins that our livers can't is what the issue is. You also werent just saying to eat whole foods. Here is your original claim:Please keep in mind that the ultimate purpose of cleansing is not weight loss, but based on the idea that while your body does have awesome filtering systems, they weren't designed to handle air pollution, pesticides and hundreds of chemical additives in our foods, heavy metals in our beauty supplies. Cleansing is meant to give your body's natural filters time to rest and catch up on processing the poisons in your system by exposing yourself to the easiest to process foods only in their most natural state.
This is what we have a problem with. It's complete nonsense. Not one statement in this paragraph stands up to science.8 -

There are benefits to eating whole foods - they are nutritionally dense and you have a better chance of getting optimal amounts of fiber, protein, and fat if you eat them. Awesome.
But telling people they can/should eat whole foods because it does things it doesn't do is NOT helpful. Whole foods aren't easier for your body to digest, they aren't free of chemicals or even legit environmental toxins, they don't "cleanse" your body or make it easier for your body to "cleanse" itself. Too many people waste a lot of time trying to live up to unrealistic rules and false ideas about how the body works that they never learn how to realistically eat for a healthy life. OP wasn't looking to cleanse anything, she was looking to lose weight, and her trainers broscience woo cleanse wasn't working, because it was woo and broscience.8 -
I'm not forgetting. I'm just too exhausted with arguing to go dig up all the studies that back up what I've been saying, especially when no one else has supported their arguments against me with research either. Frankly, I'm done with the forums for the day, I'm done with reading the personal attacks. In done with every single human being that finds it okay to bash people rather than sending a private message offering to non- toxicity talk with me about scientific proof that I'm wrong. I'm remembering now why my depression and anxiety had me avoiding these forums for over two years.0

Similar symptoms in the beginning of a ketogenic diet, it's definitely from dropping off too fast. You really ought to have been advised to cut back slowly for at least two weeks. You've shocked your system with a sudden lack of glucose... Your trainer is wrong to suggest this is necessary because it's not unless you have a health condition requiring it. Your headache will go away after a cup of coffee and a slice of toast just fyi.0

That's probably a good idea. Public forums may not be the place for you if others get to you.
Also, if you believe you were attacked, you should report the posts for moderation.10 -

So why not go be Amish instead of a bogus "cleanse?"
Because most people would rather have cars and cell phones than avoid cancer.
What the heck?
My thoughts exactly.2 -
The sad truth is, in complete honesty - this is a terrible technique used by poorly experienced trainers with very few work ethics.
It isn't anything about a cleanse and it sounds as though it's everything to do with them forcing clients to take a very low calorie 'plan' for short term loss.
Disregarding what is being lost, all the Trainer cares about is those short term results and their profile feedback instead of long term sustainability of lifestyle and ultimately the longevity of the health of the client.
You don't need a detox(the human body detoxes itself well enough), it sounds like you need a new PT.6 -

Here you go:
Please see the attached from University of California - Berkley: http://www.berkeleywellness.com/healthy-eating/diet-weight-loss/nutrition/article/truth-about-detox-diets
Summary from the article
Bottom line:
Special detox plans are at best unnecessary and at worst potentially harmful. A massive body of scientific literature supports the effectiveness of a healthy diet, adequate sleep, and regular exercise in keeping your body’s systems functioning optimally—and in conferring the same results claimed by detox plans, like healthy-looking skin, sustainable weight loss, increased resistance to colds and other illnesses, and more. Save your money and put your energy instead into eating a well-balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and healthful fats (such as nuts, avocados, and olive oil); living an active lifestyle; and making sure you get adequate sleep.10 -
Oh my goodness, this sounds miserable! I have a pretty high pain tolerance, too, but migraines are rough to contend with. It affects workouts obviously, but for me it also affects my diet. When I feel like crap, my resolve goes out the window as I eat whatever doesn't make my stomach turn. That usually ends up being very salty things and ice cream in large amounts.
I'll echo some of the others here..I think your trainer piled too much on between the caffeine and the low carbs. It's a testament to your resolve that you stood it for this long..I don't think I could have. I'd have fired that trainer and drowned my sorrows in a tub of coffee..haha.
I started here on MFP at 241 lbs three years ago. Since that time, I lost 85 lbs and have kept most of it off. It can definitely be done without all of this misery, I promise!0 -
if you can get through it great... but i went on a similar diet and could not stand the migraines it made me stop.0

I eat paleo and there's no way I would give up my coffee! You are likely experiencing the no caffeine and low carb effects...you can get flu like symptoms until your body adjusts. Up your fat intake and drink your coffee with half and half or full cream and no sugar. Lose the diet soda, that stuff is awful for you! I lost 45 pounds eating paleo/primal and I'm shooting for 50 more...whole real food, low carb, higher fat and protein, no grains, no sugar, little processed foods as you can manage. You will start to feel better....your body is just feeling the effects of getting rid of all that sugar and crap out of your diet. Good luck!0

thestoryofangelina wrote: »Hi all. My PT has upped my fitness routine to include a detox cleanse, where I am eating natural, lean foods, no sugar, no caffeine, no alcohol, no processed anything. Basically the diet is fruit, veggies, protein with a carb in the evening at supper (sweet potato, wholegrain rice only). Minus veg I am averaging around 1100-1200 calories a day. This diet is quite similar to the Paleo diet.
Anyhow, where I need help... First 5 days were bad, no energy, etc but I have gotten used to the foods and am not as hungry anymore. However, I am on day 10 with a headache, and it is only getting worse. Two days ago it crossed into migraine territory. Drinking more water is not helping. I was sick to my stomach this morning because of the pain and even with having a high pain tolerance, I am not sure how much more of this I can take.
My trainer says after our 10 day cleanse, we will add in some things but no caffeine. I imagine this is what is causing the migraine, but my question is - is it worth it and have any of you experienced this before? I had 2 coffees a day with skim milk and no sugar - for reference. Between last week's no energy falling asleep at my desk fog and this week's migraine from hell, it is effecting my performance at work, which is really not good. And I should also add I haven't gone to the gym as usual either because of the effects of all of this. Especially the migraine.
Any insight, help, tips, etc would be appreciated.
I have not read all of the replies, but I do have some tips:
1. Drop the trainer because she has no idea what she's talking about. There is absolutely no reason to do a detox because:
a. Detoxes don't work, they are a fad only
b. Your body naturally gets rid of toxins all by itself. If this is not happening, you need to go to the doctor.
2. All you need to be healthy is to eat a diet predominantly of whole foods that meet your macros split. Don't forget your treats as well, as long as they fit into healthy calorie goals.
3. There is nothing wrong with caffeine, or processed foods or anything else on the forbidden list. Don't get rid of anything you don't like
4. You are not eating enough food. The minimum to lose approx. 2 lbs a week is 1200. You are not eating enough food. Raise those calorie goals.
5. A 10 day headache getting worse to migraine stage is a HUGE red flag. It could be due to not eating enough, but it could also be from something else. Go to the doctor.

That sounds good. Still, if you're having headaches and migraines, I'd go to the MD.0 -
@Packerjohn thank you very much, I will read through the article and the explanation or summary you gave makes a lot more sense than anything anyone else tried to tell me. It seemed like everyone was just seeing who could say I was wrong the loudest but never actually giving any reason why except pretty much saying "because science" without actually showing any science. Would you mind if I send you a friend request?1

I see you've already had lots of replies, but as a migraine sufferer I just wanted to comment and say I am so, so sorry you are experiencing this pain. My longest migraine was 10 days and I just want to cry thinking about it. Because headaches and migraines can be triggered by things in your sensory environment, people are quick to blame the victim. You obviously didn't ask for this! I hope you feel better soon and I agree with the person who said go to the doctor, asap. Ps: if you are taking a lot of medication to help manage the pain, Google "rebound headache". You might have to go cold turkey off the pain medications for this headache.
As for the diet, I think you get the picture. The main point about that I wanted to make is that diets that ask you to cut a bunch of stuff are not *sustainable*. You want to lose 150 lbs. When you're done, you don't want to gain it all back by saying, "finally, I can stop eating in this difficult way!" You should just perhaps try to cut your sugar and cream in half, or switch to Splenda, not cut out your coffee. I love pizza and eat it a lot, but I started eating 1 or 2 slices instead of 4.2 -

Since you requested:

The detox nonsense that one needs to give their body's filtering system a rest makes about as much sense as saying one should stop breathing for a couple days to give the respiratory system a rest from the "toxins" we inhale.12
