Hi friends,
today is my one month on fitnesspal. I consume 1100-1200 calories a day and then exercise 20-30 minutes on elliptical. I have not lost any weight, not a single pound and I am so upset now. I have always been eating less and certainly not a food lover. any suggestions as to what am I doing wrong here. I am 33, a mother of two girls, 5"7' and weigh 180 pounds. please help:(

Well, you're either not really eating 1200 calories, or you need to see your doctor and get a blood panel done to check for things like hypothyroidism.
That's really the only options. Are you measuring your portions and logging everything? Every. Thing. It sucks, but to get results you have to get accurate.8 -

I was in a similar boat, and realized I needed to track EVERY SINGLE BITE. I do have a thyroid condition, and now that that's under control, I'm losing regularly. I lowered my calorie goal, and try to stay between 1000 and 1200 daily now. You can do it!5

I do have thyroid issues and i take medicine for that. Maybe thats why its taking long for me to lose weight.0

If your levels are adjusted, you can lose weight. I'm on synthroid AND an antidepressant. I can blame them, or I can realize that my weight gain was definitely about what I ate.10

I am not gonna give up. atleast my hanging belly is not so hanging anymore...:) thanks ladies!2

Good luck! You can do it!2

That's impossible; your body does not defy the laws of thermodynamics. You are not a special and unique snowflake and if you are, you need to be in a medical lab somewhere being studied because you're the only person on this planet defying this science. A thyroid condition is a sad excuse, it may account for a 200-400 calorie swing in one direction or the other but I doubt that's the problem, just an excuse. Buy a food scale, track every literally every single thing you eat down to the gram before you eat it so you don't forget to track it later, and you'll soon find out where you've been going wrong. Hearing the truth may sound rude but if you're actually serious you'll thank me later.11

Are you weighing all your food on a food scale?2
-
OP: When was the last time you had your thyroid levels checked?
Once you are properly medication for an underactive thyroid, you can pretty much expect to lose weight like a 'normal' person. The medication simply levels the playing field.
Otherwise - just like everyone else - you need to make certain your food intake is being accurately measured because chances are you're actually eating more than you think.
Also, going as low as 1100 - 1200 calories per day is neither necessary nor sustainable, especially if you are exercising on top of that and not eating at least some of those 'extra' calories.3 -
yes, I do have a food scale and I weigh every thing that goes in my mouth.0

Im hypothyroid and it took me a little over a month to see any results. I am JUST NOW losing weight. I started trying Jan 3rd! But now its like it is pouring off. Keep working at it and dont give up. Some people see results in a few days, others take longer. It can take up to 4-6 weeks to see any results with a new routine! Its a discouraging 4-6 weeks, but as long as you keep it in mind and keep fighting, it will happen.3

last time I got my thyroid checked was in December and doctor put me at levothyroxine 50 mg for 3 months. will get it checked again in March. but as someone said it plays a little role when it comes to lose weight so I cant fully blame thyroid for that. its gotta be what I eat.0

What our weight does is always the result of how much we are eating. Since you are not losing weight you are eating at maintenance which means, setting aside any medical conditions that need attention, you are eating more than you realize.
How are you determining that you are accurate in calories in/calories out?0 -

Even with a thyroid condition, between 1,000 and 1,200 is too low. Minimum for women is 1200 calories.

So weird question - and maybe someone already asked this - but if you, by your own claim, aren't a food lover then how did you get to be in a position where you aren't happy with your weight? I got be my in my situation because I over ate and couldn't control myself.4

where I am now is because of the carbs. I used to eat less (portion wise) but always carbs and didn't realize they make you gain weight. now that I am logging everything I am realizing how much carbs and sugar I used to consume in those portions.0

Nope. Carbs in and of themselves don't cause weight gain. It's the overall calorie surplus that makes us gain weight.
There is nothing at all wrong with carbs and sugar. Just like everything else, moderation is key.
You are no losing weight because you are eating more than you realize.
Do you weigh your food? Measure your liquids? Log every single thing you consume?
Do you eat exercise calories back? Where do you get those burns from?5 -
well all I can say after your comments is that I wasn't realizing my calorie intake. I was eating more and not calculating at all before Jan 8. I am 180 because I wasn't eating right but not losing anything in 4 weeks is also discouraging... no? when should I start seeing difference? another month maybe?0

GM - isra2011 - did you ever think you are not eating enough? I recently had a body composition test done and indicated to the advisor that I eat roughly 1200 calories per day and without a beat he said you are not eating enough! You body needs those 1200 to function if you are doing absolutely nothing but breathing. He explained that I was putting my body in starvation mode - it's the same as if you didn't have your required water intake for the day how your body holds on the all the liquids. Currently, I work out 5 to 6 days a week for an hour, log absolutely everything (even on cheat days) and the scale wasn't moving for me either, the clothes fit better but the scale didn't move. I've changed up my eating being very mindful of my percentages and have lost 1lb over the past week. Hope this helps some.3

clothes are fitting better. I don't have to wear layers to cover up anymore---maybe this is the beginning of all the efforts I am putting. I have put most of my weight during pregnancy and my baby is 6 months now. I was 160 before pregnancy.0

kay but no. I eat all the pasta I legit get my hands on and I am down 65lbs in 3 years. Granted it's not a HUGE weight loss, but I've maintained it which is more important to me.
Carbs have nothing to do with it. Over eating - calorie wise - will get you overweight. Carb rich foods can be calorie dense so you need to watch how much you eat . . . so it wasn't carbs it was eating too much, period.1 -
Would you be willing to open your diary so we can get a better idea of what might be happening? If you're confident in your logging and your thyroid levels are in check, then time or a doctor are the only suggestions I can give if you won't answer the questions being asked.1

No. No. No.
Starvation mode in this sense doesn't happen.
You need a new adviser.6 -
Instead of tracking weight loss, track inches lost. Hang in there! And remember, it took your body 9 months to gain the baby weight - give yourself at least 9 months to lose it. If you are breastfeeding, you may need extra calories. Like valwalter stated, you may not being eating enough calories each day. Keep up the great work!1

Thank you everyone for the support and great advises.... i'll be back in a month to update you all. I feel much better now. !!!1

Weight is a terrible feedback indicator of progress made. Typically, it lags behind actual progress and if you really think about it you don't care about the number (IE I would love to be 250lbs and ripped) - you really care about the appearance and fitting into perhaps slimmer clothing.
I would instead focus in on your macro composition and have a good balance of Protein/Carbs/Fat and don't always "under eat" (if you are doing that-- no idea as I don't know what % you are eating or how long you been doing this).
Stay committed to your nutritional logging and exercise and enjoy the occasional treat (read flexible diet).
The rewards of your hard work will follow!1 -
