It's super addicting. There's a lot of brain chemistry manipulation going on, and it's deeply psychological as well.0 -

You have people in this thread talking about how they drink up to 6 liters a day, or have been drinking it for 25+ years, and you're going to say it's not addicting at all?0 -

That's correct. Diet soda isn't addictive. If it is caffeinated, there are addictive properties to caffeine, but that is not in every diet soda and not exclusive to diet soda....
For what it's worth, I have consumed diet soda for ~25 years and given it up twice for pregnancy and a few times for Lent. Never experienced withdrawals or physical side effects.
Also, it was posted at the top of the thread, but you may want to give this a read:

I was addicted to diet coke. When I stopped drinking it, my urge to snack stopped also. Coincidence? I don't think so. I stopped one other time and had similar results. Stopping also cut the number of my bathroom visits in half.0

This. I'm currently cutting back from drinking 4+ cans a day, to today so far not having any (usually by this time in the morning I'm on my second can). Absolutely no withdrawal symptoms......because I just started drinking coffee yesterday and I had a cup of that instead this morning. That has waaay more caffeine than the soda and I'm feeling pretty awesome right now Not missing the soda at all right now.1 -

I've been eating broccoli almost daily, going on 35+ years. Darn addiction5 -
Meh. But, it is a decent way to dilute vodka or rum if I don't have the calories for 'cranberry' juice or wine when I'm out dancing.0

When I worked in fast food, the carbonated water part of the soda machine wasn't working, and I accidentally chugged straight coke syrup, so that put me off coke for a LONG time! When I 'found' diet coke, I realised it is much lighter and fresher IMO, and normal coke still tastes 'too syrupy' for my traumatised brain lol.
I couldn't find Diet Dr. Pepper in England, so I didn't know about it's amazingness until I came to the states, and now it's by far my favourite!

(Anybody bloviating about aspartame conspiracy theories will be in for a firm stare)
Even if aspartame was bad for you, there's no way it would hurt your body more than excess sugar. Fact is, aspartame saves millions of lives by reduction in obesity. When I switched from sugar to various other artificial sweeteners (mostly aspartame at the time) I lost 30lbs without doing anything else differently.
However, soda is really unhealthy and I also stopped drinking it 5 years ago so I would encourage you to find healthier drink alternatives if you can find satisfaction in them.2 -
Don't like the diet, prefer the regular coke. You guessed it, I only like the bad stuff lol0

Diet Coke or Coke Zero.....Love both of them.0

I've been drinking liquids including diet sodas for 25+ years because I like being alive.4 -
I love the "Diet Coke"0

I honestly can't tell the difference between diet coke and diet pepsi without drinking them side by side (heresy, I know!), but I accidently picked up a six-pack of coke zero not too long ago and all I can say is yuck.
On the 25+ year addiction thing - I've been drinking diet soda ever since it became available in the 60s, so I'm probably dead by now, considering I also drink coffee and tea with splenda all day long. I don't remember exactly when I became a zombie, but it was probably around the time I had a full time day job, was going to school full time at night, dealing with 2 active teenage daughters and chain-drinking the evil diet sodas. I'm doing fine now, thank you, zombie life seems to agree with me.5 -
Coke zero and cherry coke zero for life.0

I never mentioned aspartame or said that it was scary. You seem to be viewing "addicted" in the traditional medical sense, as characterized by tolerance and physical withdrawal, and I meant it in the broad sense; "persistent compulsive use of a substance known by the user to be harmful".
Let me ask you: why did you give it up for your pregnancy? Maybe because you know / were told by your health care practitioner that it contains harmful ingredients that could have negatively impacted your child's health?
I'm not arguing with you, we're just not viewing my original statement the same way, so let me clarify myself. Almost everybody drinks diet soda as a replacement for sugar reward-stimulus (regular soda replacement) and what I mean by "super addicting", "deeply psychological", and "brain chemistry manipulation" is merely that the user is attempting to replicate this common sugar fix stimuli. In reality the brain sees artificial sweeteners as something else completely; not as sugar. This increases habituation, or more plainly creates the need to drink larger and larger amounts of diet soda. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2892765/
I'm not here to demonize diet soda, and definitely not aspartame, which like I said I never even brought up to begin with. Although it'd be pretty easy to demonize diet coke for other reasons; I mean just off the top of my head I could tell you it contains large amounts of 4-methylimidazole, a known carcinogenic compound, and that's just to start... lol. Anyway I know you're going to ignore all of this and continue on with your day; have a good one!0 -
I am habituated to a shot of Kefir daily too. Is that bad?2

Diet coke, coke zero, diet Dr. Pepper, diet ginger ale, diet root beer, sprite zero, or diet 7-up; anything but diet Pepsi... it's gross!0

My mother was told to give us 7UP for tummy issues when I was little. Never heard of the syrup-ice thing. That sounds disgusting!
I thought ginger ale was the go-to for stomach flu? that's what I remember.
ETA: I see someone else here mentioned it too.
Back to the thread...I like Diet Coke with Lime. I do the same thing if I get a diet Coke with vodka or rum - I ask for a lemon or lime wedge to squeeze into it.
Although lately I've been drinking a lot of Arrowhead fizzy water. More thirst quenching for me than plain water.1
