Isn't this a movie or book or something? Why do I always think of MFP when I hear that phrase? Why do I always hear people talking about how this isn't a dating site? Technically this is true, but isn't any type of social media a place to make connections? Why would a weight loss site that is based on social interactions be any different? Should it be different? Some people don't seem to mind and yet I read others posting about it with a lot of anger or disgust. If mfp was not a place to be social, do you think it would still work for you with weight loss? Or is it a case of social being fine, but some people take social to a whole new level? Has that happened to you? Has it been detrimental to your weight loss efforts or helped? Tell me your story, I'm curious.

Wait a second now, this ISN'T a dating site??
and what is this weight loss people keep referring to?

    I'm so lost.

The social aspect has really helped me a great deal. It keeps me logging in, and logging in reminds me to log my food and watch my calories, and keeps me moving forward, even if it's slow.

If it weren't for all the silly, crazy, snarky weirdos in this place, I probably would have walked away last month when things were getting really tough. :)

It's true. I gained back a ton of my losses last time I stopped doing the social part of the site. Stopped logging in everyday, stopped caring really.

I care about my friends and that does keep me logging in. Then I am motivated when I see all of them working so hard. If it was just me alone....I'd fail.

This is important for me, too. I love having cheerleaders pushing me to keep going... but I also love being a cheerleader for those that need a little push themselves. I didn't realize how far just someone acknowledging my efforts would go to keep me working. I'm probably not the only one that feels that way.

This is true too. It's the being around driven like minded people that helps me most. Most people in my real life don't give a *kitten* if I run 15 miles, if I chose carrot sticks over french fries. If I hit a new PR or my lowest weight logged. But here is different, they care about all that stuff as much as I do.

that's super true, my irl friends seriously do not want to hear about my new macro composition or how much i can squat. but i get so excited about these things and it's nice to have a place to share them. and to be inspired by what other people are doing.

    So so true.

And being around people who have been there, done that is super helpful, too. I started with 160 pounds to lose. That's a long road. It a little easier to travel knowing there are others who have made it to the end, or are getting close.

I also feel like having so many people "watching" and celebrating my successes is a helpful reason to keep going. When I feel like I can't really do this anymore, I remember these people are gonna be so disappointed and it sounds weird but that helps me, too.

I don't really care what people do here. I may have critiqued a few but it was only coz I am a D sometimes and I have regrets ;)

The only uncool thing is people who fool around and have spouses who don't know a thing - like emotional cheating and nudes. That is just wrong.

I know most use this for fitness as well as social purposes. However, there is a few weird ones who never speak about exercise and clearly don't exercise at all :p That I wonder why.

Don't call me weird please. B)

I know you exercise. I was referring to those who spam threads with images, like 100s of them. How do you have the energy/bandwidth for that kind of thing!

I was kidding. Of course I exercise. Again, kidding, I really don't. lol

The social aspect makes it fun. I do think people can find friendships, relationships, bathing buddies anywhere at any time so why shouldn't or couldn't this be everything to all? I think some see the "would you kiss" or "would you date" threads and think that is real and people are actually planning on kissing and dating but it is what it is a fun site to kill LOTS of time on and if you happen to make a new friend then yay.

and (1) do people actually only work 9-5 anymore?
    (2) aren't we all just really here for the D?

Well I work 8-5 but between 8-9 is when I'm taking all the pics I'll be sending out sporadically throughout the day so no time to chat then

well 8-9 is like the easing in period at work no? so you're entitled to that as your photo time
I always believed anything after 4 was winding down time....it's really best I not work in offices eventually everyone believed this

my day is a little different. my easing in period lasts from 8a-12p, at which time i'm ready to eat lunch at my desk. since it's a mandatory hour lunch, i don't start my winding down time until 1p.

Sometimes I wish I had an office job again...

But then I remember the last time I had an office job, my boss was basically an older, fatter version of Bill Lumbergh.

My boss is more of a Michael Scott in a way. It is not always a good thing
