How many grams of sugar a day can you have and still lose weight?

I'm alloted 1700 calories a day. How many grams of sugar do you eat a day and still see weightloss? Usually I don't go over 20 grams of sugar a day and most days I don't get close to that. Just a curious question.

I'Only 1.02987 grams. Any more and you gain. And go bald.
Kidding.
Also kidding.
It is about your calorie deficit. The only time you should worry about sugar/carbs or any other macro is if you're in serious athletics or there's a medical reason. I usually go over the MFP sugar limit if I have my coffee with creamer and 1 serving of ice cream. And yet, still have lost weight. And not hair.

As many as you want. Sugar only affects your weight loss if you eat enough of it to no longer be in a deficit.
ETA: I don't track sugar, it is only a subcategory of carbs and total carbs is more important.6 -
A calorie deficit is what matters for weight loss, not individual nutrients like sugar. Though many yummy sugary items come with lots of fat and can make it difficult to stay within that calorie deficit.
Unless you have a medical reason to avoid sugar, like diabetes, there's no reason to worry about it.
Focus on finding the combination of foods that satisfy your nutrient needs and keep you feeling full with lots of energy and don't stress if the foods have sugar in them.4 -

Kidding. Calories are what matter with weight loss, not specific foods. Although no doubt thousands will disagree.
I have trouble getting in my calories a day because of sugar and because I'm watching my sodium. I try not to go over 1200 mg of sodium a day and if I watch what I eat, it's possible to stay under that amount. However at the end of the day I still have so many calories left. Like right now it says i have about 1000 left in my alloted calories.0 -
Sodium I can understand because it can hit your blood pressure and cause water retention (which that part is temporary). Eat the foods. Go eat some unsalted peanuts (or peanut butter), an avocado, some rice, leftovers in the fridge. ALL THE ICE CREAM (ok not all the ice cream, but for 1k calories you can have at least 4 servings of the chocolate ice cream that's in my freezer). Hop to it!6

80 lbs down here, and I can honestly say I've never paid attention to the sugar bracket. From a weight loss perspective, calories are what matter. From a health perspective, of course, a balanced diet is important. I'm not saying eat fruit, cake, and ice cream all day...but unless theres a medical issue, it isn't something to get worked up about if you're going over on your sugar goal sometimes.4

Then stop tracking sugar.
Do you have a medical reason to stay so low in sodium?5 -

If you have a medical condition that requires you to stay within a certain number for sugar or for sodium then that's what you should stick to. Other than that neither sugar nor sodium will prevent you from losing fat if your calories are appropriately set.4 -

That is another thought of mine. How many carbs are too many? I never go over 100 carbs a day but even things like bananas have high carbs.0 -

I don't have the premium subscription to MFP so I don't get the sugar allotment.0 -

No medical reason. I am just uneducated about carbs I guess.0 -
Sugar = Carbs. You can switch around your macros as to what you see on your daily log, I don't think any of those are locked down.1
-
Concentrate on getting your calories right first being 1000 calories under goal is not a good thing. Once you have got the calories bit right, then look at tweaking your macros for nutritional balance. Sounds like you're getting way too bogged down in details, keep it simple.3

Carbs are an easier source of energy for the body. They aren't something to fear and for many can be filling. Others find that lowering carbs to increase fats is more filling. There are no hard set rules on how much you should or shouldn't be eating.1 -

I have sugar on my macros list. Perhaps it's a legacy thing as it's been up there since before they got bought out.

Start out with the default MFP recommendations for the 3 macro nutrients and ignore the rest. Concentrate on hitting your calorie target and finding foods that satisfy you and that you enjoy. You can always tweak your macros later.2 -

You can see you micronutrients for the past week when you click on the "Reports" tab. You just cannot put them into your diary, except sugar, sodium, and fiber1 -

Food>Settings>"Nutrients tracked" was the part that I was talking about. If you want to get into micronutrients, that's another ballgame for sure. I will agree with Earlnabby, use the ones MFP provides for the macros if you want to pay attention to them.1 -
That is not a macros list, that is a nutrients list. I traded sugar out and track fiber instead since total carbs is the important number for a T2Dm3
