Congrats @mobycarp and @lporter229.3

Hopped on the treadmill and did 3 miles this morning, had to get off and take my husband lunch. I think I'll get back on after my daughter lays down for a nap3
-
Congratulations on finishing @lporter229 and @MobyCarp!!! Those are great times both of you!!0
-
I hid myself away from this group in a sulk when I got injured a while back, but I couldn't resist coming back to see how the fabulous Boston runners did! Well done @MobyCarp and @lporter229, amazing times! Hope you both made it through unscathed and enjoyed your experience1

Congratulations @mobycarp and @lporter229 fantastic!2

How do you folks who have gone through multiple pairs of shoes know when it's time to retire a pair? My first pair of runners, that I got last March, now have 326 miles on them and, I'm not certain but, I think that some of my shin ache issue is from running in them.0

With over 300 miles on them and shin ache I would retire them. If the pain goes away, woohoo you solved the problem.0 -

Yeah, I'd agree with @skippygirlsmom . You're gonna need to order new shoes anyway, and I think it's good to have a couple in rotation, so even if you can get a few more miles out of them, it's no big deal. I find I really notice how dead a pair of shoes are once I put on a brand new pair of them, lol. Just had to bite the bullet and order myself a new pair today, all of a sudden I have over 450 miles on my current pair, ugh.0 -

Good points both of you. I think I was just a little attached to them since they were my first pair. I think I'll take them out of the rotation... kind of a bittersweet thing....I've run enough to retire a pair....
and about shoes in the rotation...um...I have 6 pairs in rotation plus my 2 pairs of trail shoes....LOL....0 -
I'm back from a great weekend, though I ran 6 miles less than planned.
So much to catch up with!! 200 posts behind.
@WhatMeRunning last summer I got the race info email for a 5K race I swear I never registered for. I remember going to the site, filling out the form, then deciding not to do it. I got the email the night before, after coming home from a 9 or 10 mile run. I raced it, and got a PR, but not by much.
For all you runnerds on Strava, check out the web plugin called StravistiX. I think it has a lot of the features Runalyze has, though I'm resisting temptation to check out Runalyze for the moment so I can't say for sure.
@Elise4270 congrats on the kiddo and your running!
@MNLittleFinn be grateful for sucky long runs. You may get to feeling that way during your race and now you know you can push through it. Easy long runs are easy. Hard long runs are hard <said Capt. Obivious> Now regarding shoes...do your shins ache when wearing newer shoes? If no, then toss the old ones or wear them for non-running activities, like signing up for a 50 mile race. Don't get attached to the nasty, stinky things! BTW, the only thing that surprises me about your 50k signup is how long it took you to do it.
@autumnblade75 - 20 miles on a treadmill!??!?!?! I am awestruck!!!!
I know I'll never do Boston Marathon. I love watching those of you going for it get in and run it, and I'm truly happy about it but I'm with @girlinahat ...if I'm going to take the time and spend the money for a destination race, you can bet it will be a trail ultra. If I have to get on a plane, I'll be running on dirt. Currently I have a couple of destination ultras in mind, both in Oregon because that's where my sister lives, and where I think I can convince my wife to go along with me. Her brother just retired from the Air Force and they think they're moving near Knoxville, so I'll look for something there too. Now I do continue to run road races, and will likely run a few more marathons (gotta break that 4 Hr mark) but my heart and soul is on the trail. UTMB...OH MY now THERE'S a destination race!!! As @MobyCarp and @juliet3455 say, Boston, ultras, and running in general, means different things to different people. The fact that a simple act such as running can satisfy so many diverse goals and purposes is one of the many beautiful things about running.
Speaking of Boston, I forgot all about the race today so I didn't track any of the 4 runners I know it in it. It looks like I could have gotten the play-by-play for our runners just by reading this thread, LOL! Congrats to @mobycarp and @lporter229 !!!!!
@garygse holy moly way to smash that PR!!! I love that you went with how you felt, rather than your pace alerts.
@katharmonic awesome impromptu racing!! Killer post-race eats too!
@ddmom0811 hope you're having a lovely time in London!
@kgirlhart I'll often take walk breaks on my long runs...some times to take pictures, some times to walk up steep hills, some times because the run is kicking my *kitten*. Any distance covered from when I start the run to when it's complete (including a cool-down walk, if any) gets counted in the total no matter how much I walk. I think @OSUbuckeye906 is right, though, that it's better to slow down the pace so you can continually run. The only exception would be if you're just starting and your run pace is already at conversational pace.
@KatieJane83 have a great trip!
Ok, all caught up you folks. After I finish my taxes I'll get you caught up with me. I have a pretty good story to tell about my run last night in Iowa...6 -
Phew. Just got through seven pages of catch up and was on tenterhooks as to whether @MobyCarp and @lporter229 made it!! Talk about exciting reading a bunch of posts from you guys! And well done to both for finishing.
Been away for the weekend walking with a non-running friend - nothing too strenuous but great being outdoors - will post some more fab photos soon
Looking forward to getting back to running this week0 -
@MNLittleFinn - I start looking for any pains that show up when wearing any shoes that have 300+ miles on them. When I do, out they go!
I remember the bittersweet moment I got rid of my first pair of Brooks. The first cut is the deepest, so they say. Now I can throw them out like an old girlfriend.
(just kidding) (I'm not like that at all)
Except for the part about it being easier to get rid of shoes. It is.6 -
I just realized that my being short (5'65) "excuse" for my "slow" running got blasted out of the water today.... Jordan Hasay is only 5'4"4
-
Congratulations to @MobyCarp and @lporter229 on your Boston finishes!

Tonight's run group workout was an inverted ladder of 3-2-1-1-2-3 minute intervals hard with 2 minutes rest for the first three intervals, and one minute rest for the last three. It was tough work and my legs were wobbly after the weekend's 10k and then hills yesterday. I could really go for a massage right about now.2 -

Real Goals: Run Boston. Finish healthy. Recover well.
Today's notes – My cold had not run its course this morning. I did get over 8 hours of sleep, even with the alarm set at 5, so I gave myself the best chance I could. Then there was the weather. It was warm.
It was so warm, I left my throw-away long pants in my hotel room. Hopped the T to Arlington Station to do bag drop and board the bus, and gave my throw-away gloves to my sister because I realized I wouldn't need them in Athlete's Village. Kept the throw-away jacket, and was glad I'd kept it at times; but it was pretty easy to discard on the way to the start line.
Between my cold and the weather that was a lot like last year, my aspirations were reduced. There would be no time qualifying for Chicago. Maybe I could just run the whole marathon easy, but I still needed to worry about how to prevent/manage the calf cramps that I've had after finishing two marathons, and preventing me from finishing another. So I was diligent with hydration and electrolytes. I was so diligent, I needed to stop at the port-a-pot just past mile 8. That clearly shows on Strava.
The primary goal today was to finish uninjured. I took a walk break around mile 20, in the middle of Heartbreak Hill, for energy level. I could have run up the hill, but I was trying to finish in good shape. Took another walk break in mile 22, and in mile 23. Then at mile 24, when I stopped at the aid station, my quads cramped up. Quads? Not calves? Yep. Guzzled as much Gatorade as I could handle, chased it with a little water, and set out to walk the cramps off. In the process, felt a cramp in the left hamstring. Heh. More Gatorade at mile 25. Tested running just before Hereford street, and felt a small cramp in a calf. Okay, I walked Hereford Street and most of Boylston. Saw the clock, saw a chance to still come in under 3:50, and managed an ugly run for maybe the last tenth of a mile. That turned into my slowest marathon ever, 3:49:42, run sick and in bad weather.
I may be done with marathons. I love training for them, but the actual races haven't been kind to me.
Positives: I think I managed a tough situation reasonably well, given the goal of avoiding injury. I slowed myself down several times in the first 20 miles, I admitted I needed to take walk breaks earlier than last year, and I did reasonable damage control for the cramps. It's too early to be sure, but I think I may have avoided injury. If recovery shows that to be the case, I will have met the most important goal for this marathon.
Negatives: Boston isn't as much fun when I'm sick, and marathons aren't that much fun when it's too hot. It appears that I can run a pretty good marathon in good weather, but not in warm weather. I'll take some time to think about it, but the cure for this may well be to simply not run any races longer than a half. I know what my team mates would say: "If you're not running Boston next year, you can run Dedham hard!"
Have to think about this. In my possibly-completed marathon career, I have 4 starts; 3 finishes; 3 BQs; and 2 Bostons. That may be enough.

@MobyCarp - Hats off to you for running it so well in such adverse fashion, and for going the final miles with your legs cramped up in such a way. I wish this Boston experience had been better for you. You not only finished something that so many will never even get a chance to start, but finished in circumstances that many other Boston runners may have chosen to throw in the towel. Just amazing!
Hope you are back to 100% soon!2 -
@MobyCarp that was a great recap. I. Sorry it was so hard on you. You had some real adverse conditions, between the weather and your cold. Finishing was a great accomplishment in and of itself.
Hope to see you back to 100% soon!1 -
So impressed by you guys @MobyCarp and @lporter229 (especially with a cold Moby, damn!)! Glad Boston was good to you!
Haha the parental struggle @MNLittleFinn ! And I struggle with shoes retirement/buying as well so I am zero help. My current road shoes are Kinvara 8's but they are too damn neutral and I need to switch back to the Guide 10 but somewhat concerned my husband will flip out lol. Someone make a running shoe that can last a decade, I'd buy that
Our local trail running group has decided on Wednesday nights for the spring/summer season meet up. I might have some crazy wildlife photos for you soon

@MobyCarp and @lporter229: Congratulations on completing the Boston Marathon in awesome finishing times. So impressed with you, @MobyCarp for toughing it out with your cold, cramps and other issues...so in awe with your finishing time even with walking breaks. A true champion overcomes adversity. Can't wait to hear @lporter229 's recap.0

After missing my goal 3 months in a row, I finally achieved (bested) my goal last month, having run 61.43 miles. This month my goal will be 50 miles.
My husband and I planned a trip to Nashville at the end of the month. We will probably be walking a lot. My husband doesn't share my love for running.
4/17.....8 miles on the Monon. I was really antsy about running today. After my visit with my Mom, who doesn't exercise and doesn't cook, I was entirely too sedentary and ate foods that I normally don't eat such as fried chicken and fried okra. I felt as though I swallowed a rock....the food took forever to digest. Anyway today I decided to run at least 6 miles and, if my legs felt okay, 8. My plan was to run at tempo with occasional fartleks and to take "breathers" at zone heart rate. I tried to run each mile at under 12 minutes. My legs felt fresh and my head was in the game (mainly), but lungs were not accustomed to working so hard. I had great luck, in that I didn't have to stop at any crosswalks this time. I shaved 10 minutes off the last time I ran the 8 miles....average pace of 11:30 minutes. My legs still felt strong at the end of it with no walking breaks.
Tomorrow my plan is to run 4 miles, (working on the yard afterward) and then 11 or 12 on Wednesday.
4/17...8 miles
4/14....8 miles
4/12....4.36 miles
4/9....10 miles
4/8....8 miles
4/2....9 miles
Total ....47.36 miles
goal...50 miles
Indianapolis Mini Marathon (Half Marathon)....May 6
Geist Reservoir Half...May 20 (tentative)
Indy Women's Half Marathon....September 30 (tentative)

I Tip my Hat in respect and honor to @MobyCarp and @lporter229
Congratulations on completing the Boston Marathon. So impressed with @MobyCarp for toughing it out with your cold, cramps and being wise enough to go for the extra hydration and walk through it rather than running through it. Like other's can't wait to hear @lporter229 's recap.
Today was Track day. I must confess that it was actually the first time I ever did a speed training session so my plans were modest. 5 members of our little club 4 elites and me.
Warm-up 1300m with Kerri. 5:44/km
Repeats 5 x400m ( 4:30/km; 4:36/km; 4:45/km; 4:35/km and 4:53/km) fairly happy with my 1st track session.
Still lots of work to do ( + 5 x 400m rest between = 5.3 km )
The other members were working on Staggered Pyramid - 400m Speed + 400m RI then 800m Sp + 400m RI and repeat x 3.
Had my watch in the wrong mode so it did not log the rest intervals = slow recovery slog ~ 6:00m/km.
After the track session we went to Coach Ken's house ( 6 times at Boston ) and watched the Marathon and socialized ( love the PVR for fast forward). While watching I looked outside and it was snowing, winter is still kicking at the doors. Tomorrow promises to be another fun day

@JessicaMcB Look forward to your trail and wildlife pic's. You will give @7lenny7 a serious competition for Trail Scenery.
@MNLittleFinn Retiring that first pair of shoes is a process that we all go through. The 1st one's I retired I set aside as I increased the shoes in my rotation, when I went back to them for a 10k rec run I could feel that they were no longer solid, did a few more 5 km's in them and then off to the Yard/Garden shoe pile they went. I have now retired 5 pairs with a few more approaching the end.
Like @WhatMeRunning if a shoe starts to give me discomfort ( especially on long runs, > 10 km ) then they quickly get moved down to shorty shoes and then off to one of the local charities who collect shoes.2 -
Good morning! I just checked in and saw all the posts from yesterday. You guys are awesome. So humbling to see you all cheering us on all day. Thanks for all the support! Congrats to @MobyCarp on your finish and doing the smart thing for your body. I was not so wise. While I am still on cloud nine for my requalifying finish, I can't walk today. Hamstrings are a mess. I'm on my mobile right now. I will post a full race report when I get home.

Ah, the re-qualifying finish. Checked in with some of the other Rochester runners at Fire and Ice after the race. The organizer of the meet up looked up my time. "What's your BQ target?" 3:55. "You'll be back next year." Re-qualifying can be addictive.
We'll see. I might look at things differently if recovery goes well. Or maybe not.6 -
Congrats to @lporter229 and @MobyCarp for a superb marathon effort! It's things like this that I find truly inspirational and motivating.
I didn't run yesterday as my legs still felt a little stiff after Saturday's race, so I walked for about 9 miles instead. That helped, and this morning, I was able to get in a few miles of warmup prior to meeting up and running with the regular group.

Nice 5 miles this morning at a refreshing 46F. Legs were a little sore from yesterday's PT and 30DS sessions and I did sleep well, so I didn't expect much out of the run but it went well and was fairly uneventful.6
