My 9 miler felt very hard today I did not have cool weather, rather it was 75 degrees. I'm hoping that is why it felt so hard. I'm also dealing with a weird chest/cough/sore throat thing that started a few days ago. My husband says I have to get used to it - it is only going to get hotter and muggier as the days go by.3 -

Real Goals: Run Boston. Finish healthy. Recover well.
Today's notes – Today the routes were 6 or 9 miles. 5 days past Boston, 9 miles was out of the question; but I thought I'd be good for 6. Turned out that none of my 8:00 pace group showed up. The 7:30's offered to let me join them; maybe 2 weeks ago, but not today. I hung out with the 8:30 group, including another pacer and an old running buddy of mine who doesn't try for 8:00.
Weather was gorgeous, about 40º F (4º C) and overcast with minimal wind, perhaps a bit cooler by the lake shore. Conversation was like old times, training philosophies and peak mileages and long runs and local running community chit chat. The pace crept to about 8:15 per mile average, just like it always used to when my buddy and I were running to an 8:30 target. Good times.
There was a short but steep down hill about mile 4 on River Street. My left quad barked at me rather sharply, asking that I stop beating on it. So I told the others I was done, and slowed to a walk. Done at 4? Yes. "You're wise to know it!" That last, from a guy who has run maybe a dozen marathons all over the north eastern United States, including Boston 2014 and 2016.
Times change. I get wiser or more cowardly, or perhaps a bit of both. I think I'm physically in better shape than I was after Boston 2016, but I'm much more cautious about keeping it that way. I probably could have run the last 2 miles of the route, which were pretty flat; but there was a lot of concrete to run in order to get to the scenic view of Lake Ontario from the end of the pier on the west side of the Genesee River. It felt like time to quit and let the quads rest.
Walked back to base, stretched the quads, did some cone touches. Had some nice conversation with several people. Lost count of how many people said something like, "I can't believe you BQ'd after walking the last 2 miles!" It's a bit of a different sub-culture. Monday and Tuesday, I was talking with people who just assumed we could decide to come back to Boston next year. Today, I was with people who were impressed with the fact of qualifying. All of them are runners, with all that implies socially; but the underlying assumptions and resulting social atmosphere are different.
Oh, and last night I was confident enough that I'm uninjured and can manage my recovery that I added more races to my calendar. I think this year I'll focus on the Rochester Runner of the Year series, the USATF Masters Grand Prix club events, and maybe the Rochester Marathon. Have to think a bit about how to balance those things; but if I lock up the age group for RROY early I'll be free to play with learning to run cross country this fall.
Just have to recover well then stay healthy to make it work. So first thing is, don't mess up the recovery. Hence quitting at 4 miles today.

Walked half a mile then ran a bit before starting hill repeats (maybe 1.5 mile). I was kinda hot but then I turned north for hill repeats and brrrr! Into the wind and mist, each repeat got colder as I got sweatier and also the mist collecting on me. I'd get hot again every time i turned back downhill.
Going down the 4th time my left hip flexor started to cramp. I stretched and went for a 5th repeat then continued to run toward home until i had run 5 miles total plus the half mile walk. But I was still .75 mile from home and knew I would get cold so I did walk/run for another half mile with the crampy leg then finally walked .25 home for 6.25 total miles.
3 houses down from me this guy let his big slobbering dog charge me I didn't even know they had a dog and it scared the crap out of me until he called the dog off. Sheesh.
Stretched and foam rolled and hopefully the hip flexor was a freak thing.4 -

My runs have been pretty uneventful and boring. This 200 mile month goal is no joke. What was I thinking!? May I'm going back to 100 mile goal. I'm so far behind on this thread, I don't know what's going on with everyone. So, I hope everyone's been pain and injury free and both Moby and Porter are recovering from great Boston runs.

DH ran with me, he literally ran circles around me. *Eye rolling* I had to restrain mysef from pushin' him in the crick, or shovin' him- haha! (Not really). After the 4 mile mark, he was breathing hard and I was still fresh, so I got my vindication *snicker. Hey, I warned him. The weather was just perfect to not push.
I actually ran more than a mile non stop. Think I have 4 short walking segments in 6+
miles (mostly terrain induced- steps, low water crossing, too much hill -not enough oomph, water fountain). Score! Fastest mile 10:37.

So my running buddy was doing a half marathon with a different friend today. So, guess what we had on my training menu.... so, I officially proved to myself I can complete a half marathon, even solo, which adds confidence to the equation for sure. Run 8 minutes, walk 1 was how my intervals went. I meant to cut back to run5 walk1.... but you know that phrase "work out in the morning before your brain realizes what you are doing? Yeah... wasn't early, but was apparently still asleep enough that still applied...and forgot to change my interval timer.

Today's notes:
Before tooting my own horn, first some plaudits to my wife. She completed her first solo (no family running with her) 5k this morning. I am super proud of her, and look forward to helping her train for her July 8k, which is the next race in the series she's signed up for.
Today's assignment was 15 miles with the last 4 miles at MP (actually faster, after talking with the coach who made my plan). It was a kind of out and back route, where I ran about 6 miles in one direction, turned around and ran back, got another mile in the opposite direction, turned around went past my start again, and turned around to finish where I started. Wasn't planned that way, but it's how it happened.
Anyway, ran the first 11 miles with a 9:37 average, and the last 4 at 9:08. Legs are tired, but I felt pretty good still.
This was a flatter course than I remember, so I feel kind of like I cheated a little running a FFLR on it, but 7.2 miles (3.6 out, 3.6 back) were along my June marathon route. I know it was only a very small part, but it was nice to run it.
Oh, as a side note, I was able to get a look at Lemon Drop Hill, which is notorious for runners because it's just past the 22 mile mark of the marathon. Good news! If my legs don't fall off by then, I have totally conquered. much bigger hills already, and that's a nice confidence booster

I haven't had much time to check in here this last week but I did manage to get some running in. I have not caught up on everything but I did go back and read @lporter229's Boston race report. Wow such a great recap! I too was brought to tears by the description of your husband's excitement over your finish and your picture with your glass of champagne! You definitely earned it! I hope you are feeling better and that your hamstrings are not permanently damaged!
Also a comment on the barefoot running discussion - if you have any issues with your feet, arthritis in a toe or maybe a break at some point earlier in your life, barefoot running can make it painful. I love my minimal shoes, they are so light and feel like nothing on my feet but I have a problem with the joint of my big toe and running in them can make it very sore. I still do though - they are my preferred shoes. Oh and they aren't even 'barefoot', in the true sense, just minimal.
@skippygirlsmom - I think it is awesome that SkippyGirl wants to work at Fleet Feet. You both will be the best dressed runners out there!
I have been having a tough time with my running lately, pretty much all month and maybe even most of 2017. I want to run, I want it to feel awesome or even just good again. I want to feel like I can actually get in a tempo run once or twice a week. When I look back at my data I am running a bit less average distance than I have in previous years at a much slower average pace. It isn't that I am out of breath or running too fast, my legs just feel tired and heavy. Each day I get out feeling hopeful that this run will be the turning point and honestly they continued to be pretty ugly runs. Yesterday however I ran 6 miles and it actually felt good, not great, now awesome but good. This morning I headed out for my long run, again feeling hopeful because my hamstrings and glutes weren't complaining, and I had a great run - it really felt good. So good in fact that I ran the 1st 5 miles entirely too fast, but I still had the energy to finish 10 rather than the planned 8 and kept the 2nd half pace right where I wanted it to be. This next week I have an appointment to see a sports nutritionist. I am hoping she can give me some insight into what I should be eating to fuel my runs effectively and not gain any more... maybe I can even drop a few pounds!
One other comment/observation from my run today. While I stopped to get a drink I chatted with 2 cyclists who had passed me on the trail. As we were heading out I said to them 'enjoy your ride' and one of them replied - Have a nice walk... I had running shorts and a running shirt on (Surf City HM), was clearly sweaty and they had just ridden by me as I was running. I really wasn't going that slow. I was a bit offended and respond 'Thanks I am having an awesome RUN'. So was I rude, overly sensitive? Or was he just being a jerk?
I am going to go back and catch up on all the running and discussions now even if I don't comment on all of them. Congratulations to all who completed races as well as to everyone who made it out the door for a run!

I was on my way to Grande Prairie (2 hr drive one way) for a 20km trail run/course review (not a race). I got called back for work. By the time I had the trouble fixed it was to late to for GP.
Impromptu Trail run in PR. From Tim's; Up Misery Mtn, Down the South Face on Camels Back and picked up the Freeland's Trail around the West Shoulders back to Tims. The wettest part was the on the west side of the Freeland trail with all the deep holes right full of water. Tip Toe around the H2O in the trees, rose bush's, thorns etc.
It was only 8.15 km and took a full 65 minutes - typical of Trails, Hills and Water challenges. Still a lot of Relaxing Fun.
The resident Black Bear family is finally out from Hibernation - lots of tracks and scat but never did see the mother and her 2 cubs from last year. She has been on Misery Mtn for 10 years so she is used to humans/dogs and just walks into the closest bush when ever she see's us. Haven't heard of anyone having a negative/bad experience with her, even with her cubs close by. The crocus's were just starting to open up and you can see where she has cleaned up some of the patch's and dug out a few ant hills.

Went and ran the rims above town, the pics I took are crappy because where it was a good place to take pics, I was on a roll and didn't want to stop, lol. Last I ran this path was 4 weeks ago, I almost doubled my distance since then, and increased my speed by .75mph.

Today is my scheduled rest day. But with the temperature at 65 I could not not run. Tuesday the forecast says the high will be 98 so there is a good chance I will miss my Tuesday run. I really felt that I needed to take advantage of the weather today. Besides, I just really wanted to run. Tomorrow is a scheduled run and it should be 70/75 so I am expecting another great day for running. I'm still not sure what I am going to do when summer gets here. I know I will have to readjust my schedule somewhat. I don't want to be a wuss, but the temperatures here are often in the 100's. I have known people who have suffered from heat exhaustion and heat stroke so I know that it is something to take seriously. Last summer I just waited until after about 8:30 pm to walk. I could probably do the same this year, I would just need to eat dinner a lot earlier so I won't be running on a full stomach.
2 -
@kgirlhart we all have those days where we can not not run. Taking advantage of weather and adjusting your schedule because of it is a great thing to do. Keep it up!1
-
@shanaber - I would assume the cyclist is just pathologically inobservant, on a par with my podiatrist. So you don't have to go back and look up my post, the podiatrist totally missed the clue that I was wearing a current year Boston Celebration jacket and race shirt 2 days after Boston, and asked me how my "race out west" (Bend, OR cross country championship in February) had gone.0
-
Thanks @MobyCarp, @WhatMeRunning and @MNLittleFinn!
@angmarie28 - beautiful pictures. I grew up in Idaho and did a double take it looks so much like home!
@kgirlhart - we have that same issue with the heat in So CA (97 yesterday and 90 today). I get up and try to get out early before it gets too hot. I can usually get my normal run done before it gets to 75 even if I don't get out as early as I would like.1 -
@shanaber after my marathon in July, we are headed to Idaho, North of coeur d'alene, we go every year to see hubs family, I'm hoping to have recovered enough to go for at least 1 run in the mountains while we are there2
-
@MNLittleFinn big congrats to your wife! I hope she is incredibly proud of herself, that's an awesome accomplishment!
So fun fact: I'm a moron. I knew my Earth Day 5K Virtual was meant to be tonight (KiR: Mostly registered because the medal is beautiful lol) so naturally I chose today to bank 1600 calories into dinner. My time was effing terrible because I felt so sick, the 5k I ran subsequently was basically me repeating over and over, "Don't you dare puke on the new treadmill. Don't puke. DON'T PUKE DAMMIT!" . Had to tap out at 10k to avoid disaster -_-
...Maybe this is why I run on an empty tank

I was only working with 2100 calories, as opposed to a similar day with the Fitbit, which would be 2800. But even with my substandard degree of compliance, that ought to make the weight loss actually happen, right? Feels like too much of a jump, to me.
@autumnblade75 Not sure if you're talking about what I think you're talking about, but I find Garmin to be rubbish at letting you count calories.
Garmin gives you barely any calories for exercise earned through walking. Fitbit was amazingly accurate for walking and running.
I've asked and asked about this all over the web. Basically, no-one has a reason.
I'm currently experimenting with having my MFP Activity Level set to Very Active (since I do at least 17,000 steps a day).1 -

Yeah, I think you are interpreting correctly. That's a damn shame.
I think I will just wear the Fitbit all the time and add the Garmin for running. When this Fitbit gives out, I'll probably switch to the clip-on kind without the HR Monitor.
They do advertise it as a competitor to Fitbit, though, right? Not just as an affordable running watch with GPS?0 -

Monthly Goal: Stay "healthy" and get in good marathon training
Nominal Mileage goal: 191 miles.
Today's notes: Easy run day, after yesterday's FFLR. Assignment was, as usual, to run 3 miles @ E pace. Ran 3.15 miles in 30:32 for an average pace of 9:41. This was all normal, until I checked out my stats on Garmin, and saw an average HR of 146. That's a whole 4 points lower than I've averaged on any run this training cycle. Sure, it was a short run on a cool (30F), but it did feel nice to see that HR.
As a related aside: I've noticed that I have been running a LITTLE slower, like 5-10sec/mile slower, as training goes on, but I'm also having consistently lower average HR, so maybe I'm finding my groove finally?

Questions for the group -
I am thinking about a 1/2 marathon on May 21 (planning a little vacation - why not run while I'm at it?). Obviously that is 4 weeks out, and I don't have any real expectations for this race other than have fun, see a new place and challenge myself a little. My background is that I started running about 18 months ago and ran my first 1/2 in October with a time of 2:39 after completing a summer training program.
I'm signing up for the training program again for this summer (and it starts May 31) and will be doing a fall half again with the goal of really improving my fitness and time. So this is like a pre-training season race for fun, maybe to see where I am. I am currently running about 20-25 miles a week, with a long run up to 7-8 miles (although the month of April has been a bit spotty, the last week was on track again). I just completed a 10k with what was for me a great time, so I'm feeling good about how my fitness has improved over the last year.
So my questions are I guess, should I try to crank up my mileage and long runs in these next few weeks to better prepare for this? Last time I maxed out at 10 miles for my long run. I don't want to feel too fatigued going into this or going into to my real training season that starts shortly after that. I think I could probably finish a 1/2 right now, but it has been a long time since I ran over 90 minutes. Or should I just go on vacation like a normal person and not do it at all

@katharmonic Part of me says go for it, but that's the part that signed me up for a second marathon and a 50k before running my first marathon.
Four weeks isn't a lot of time to ramp up training, given that you might want a week for taper. So.... and this goes against all my instincts.... it might be better to keep training how you are and take the vacation as a real one, with some running thrown in, so you're in good shape for your "real" training season.1
