It's been super busy at work this week. I've seen some beautiful pics, read @7lenny7 's bathroom in the woods story, which was hilarious, but I still need to catch up a bit.
Well, Im definitely not going to make my original goal, but my calf is feeling soooo much better. I only ran every other day this week hoping that would help. I also iced, rolled, stretched, massaged, compressed and I feel like I'm turning the corner. There's an area on the back exterior side of my left foot between the ankle and achilles that is a tad sore on and off. However, I have no pain in my calf or the other weird twinges I was experiencing on Sunday and Tuesday. I'm hoping to get a long slow run (10 miles... so not too long) in tomorrow morning. We'll see… Today is my rest day.
I hope everyone has a great weekend!!5 -

@lporter229 Just read your race report!! Thank you for sharing!! You look amazing with that "I just ran the freakin Boston Marathon and BQ'd!!" With a glass of champagne!! Love it, and I'm so happy you had a great race. Hope you recover soon, but enjoy the downtime. You worked hard for this and deserve a break.1

64/100 miles done in April
Another 4 miles on Sunday in the beautiful weather. It was a tad humid but 68 and breezy -perfect.
Today a friend convinced me to try a kettle bell class before work. I am leaving for an out of town work conference on Wednesday so I know my running opportunities are going to be few and far between this week. I decided to squeeze in another 3 miles on the treadmill before the class.
Before today, I had never tried kettle bells. How hard could it be, right? Ha!! My butt has been thouroghly kicked! My whole body is still shaky 30 minutes later. I am going to be sore tomorrow....
71/100 miles done in April
This is the longest discussion thread ever! I can't keep up! Lol
I left for an out of town work conference on Wednesday- squeezed in 10 miles before I had to leave for the airport. I knew I wouldn't get much running in this week.... My diet has been crap with all the free food and alcohol. I just can't say no to free!
3 miles on the hotel treadmill on Thursday and another 3.5 boring treadmill miles this morning.
87.5/100 miles done in April2 -
Received the new shoes that are similar to the pair I retired recently... these should work better than the pair I used for a few weeks before getting runner's knee. Went out and did 4.05 miles in the new pair. I know I'm not going to get to goal this month, but I'm going to make a recovery.

Well... today was fun. Did a site visit in the rain and puddles and mud. Then did a lot of other driving in the rain. And apparently still didn't get it all out of my system. I planned today as a rest day before attempting a distance pr tomorrow.... and I'm usually very much a fair weather runner.... but I still had a play in the puddle childish urge.... I kept it under 2 miles, but did a little run in the rain. I don't think I am smart enough to post pictures on here, or I would, rain you and Hot Springs State Park made for a pretty combo. But I also learned that I have gotten far too used to passively ignoring construction cones on my runs... and found my path disappeared into the high running river in a big hurry.

@MobyCarp I don't thinking will be simple at all. I know that, the day After each race I'll probably hate myself, but after 6 neurosurgeries a lot of sick time as a kid I tend to go full throttle.
I'd rather crash and burn than wonder whether or not I could have done the crazy things i thought of. This is one of those things for me, I have to just dive in and see where I come up...... ugh.... personality defects....1 -

@midwesterner85 glad you got out in your new shoes. How did your knee feel when you were out?
@WhatMeRunning I love your fall goals and general running enthusiasm. Just try to leave me some squirrels lol
@MNLittleFinn I wouldn't call that a personality defect at all- you will never have to look back on your life with regrets when you approach it with that kind of fervor. I wish more people would made hard, crazy runs at the things that make their hearts sing.
@greenolivetree I love running in the rain, damn that lightning!
Today I was tortured slightly when I packed up my kids in the double stroller and the baby carrier and went through the trails system to take the baby for her shots. So close, yet so far with my husband being away for work. I was tickled however by my four year old shouting at people out walking their dogs, "My mommy runs here you know! You should be running honey!" Oh dear haha

@lporter229 & your pup definitely misses running with you, maybe a few short walks with her until you get your Running Legs Back.
Like others a Welcome to @beeraxdidit ( great name ) and @MrsBoney12 . Doesn't matter if it is walk/run you are working on a better you. In my little community we have multiple people who do a Walk/Run and some of them are active Marathon or Ultra runners so it is a tried and true method. My last HM I walked every 2nd Aid Station with good results.
@7lenny7 How strange but normal that you meet your Running Neighbor at an out of town event. I met a guy this winter that we have passed/crossed on adjacent trails for 2 years. He is trying to organizing a local open course self supported 50k Ultra + Relay option with a central crossover point for the 4 loops.
@midwesterner85. Glad you were able to recognize the source of the problem. When one of my shoes failed I experienced shin and calf pain. Just re-enforced the concept of having multiple pairs in rotation so I could determine whether the problem followed a pair of shoe's or the terrain.
@WhatMeRunning Sounds like you are starting to suffer from Rest Day or Taper Angst.
@JessicaMcB Now that's a 4 yr old with a great attitude. Love the photo, could really see that they did a Fire Guard by removing the deadfall and lower branch's from the trees. This also makes it safer for runners as it makes it harder for creepers to hide behind a skinny tree with no low branch's.
If I don't get called for work Tomorrow morning ( my turn for On-Call emergency coverage ) is a planned 21k trail run/course preview & then " give the organizers a brutally honest review ".
Have never seen the course or any GPS maps so promises to be interesting/fun. That's actually one of the reasons they asked me to do a test run on it. There are other runners with more experience/mileage/faster who will also be out. A potential for a new event4 -
Many thanks @garygse @midwesterner85 @_nikkiwolf_ and especially @WhatMeRunning for your help with Strava Fitness and Freshness.
Yes, it seems while I'm in a better position fatigue and form-wise (and my SportTracks performance looks great), my schedule recently hasn't pushed me as hard as it had been, so fitness has plateaued.
I'm pleased that my fitness level is still very high, and I needed some maintenance time.
My performance is going very well. I did a parkrun PB by 20 seconds three weeks ago, and improved by another second this morning. Sunday's 26 km run was 30 minutes faster than January's 27 km run, so I'm making gains.
I think what I didn't realise was that a ~30 km run wouldn't affect my fitness like it used to, and I don't need as much taper or recovery time as when I did the first one. Thanks again!6 -
_nikkiwolf_ wrote: »@Orphia I don't have Strava premium, but I used Training Peaks premium for a trial period a bit ago, that had a similar feature. I remember having problem #3 from @WhatMeRunning 's list:
ever since my HRM started acting up, the values started going up and down like crazy.
e.g. one day the HRM would give me 200+ HR for an easy run, and my fitness went down a lot, the next day it showed a HR around 100 during a tempo run and fitness shot back up...
So maybe check that you didn't change the HRmax settings, and that the values during the last runs all look okay.
Hmmm, my HR data is very often weird. I did change my Max HR to 218 (I'm 50). My readings are either very low, very high, or somewhat normal, in roughly equal measures over all runs. I figure they balance each other out, but the data is probably unreliable in small time periods.1 -
21/04 - Caveman special - 3.2mile Interval, Biceps/Triceps Superset & Core
22/04 - 6.2mile Taper run #3 (avg 8:16, which is too fast (again)), followed with 2 mile Interval, Legs & Core

• 11/03 - 10K Run The Solar System (thanks for the tip) - 52:01
• 12/03 - TM Half Marathon (plugged in the MK HM route - attempt 1 ) - 1:54:02
• 25/03 - TM Half Marathon (plugged in the MK HM route - attempt 2 ) - 1:53:53
• 15/04 - TM Easter Bunny support run (plugged in the MK HM route - attempt 2 ) - 1:59:03
Coming up:
• 01/05 - Milton Keynes HM
• 18/06 - Run-Bedford-Run - 10K
• 02/09 - Bedford HM
• 24/09 - Windsor HM2 -
So when I do look at all these addicts talking about 50K/100K runs, I must be missing a trick or 20, for me the HM distance is (probably) as far as I am willing (which is different from capable I guess) to go ... as mentioned before, one day i might become a runner, but not if that is the standard.
@ournakedbarefootrunner - I would seriously reconsider if I were you, as the dangly bits might either be very uncomfy or seriously hurt ... let alone the feet4 -
WhatMeRunning wrote: »@autumnblade75 - Technically, I just go by HR. I also use Jack Daniels tables to keep things honest, but I tweak those tables until the HR matches up with actual paces at that effort on my runs, then I can see what my paces can be for races.
I looked a bit at what Google pulled up for "Jack Daniels tables" until I was very confused, then found a calculator that said "You dummy, run it at least a minute per mile slower than you're doing."
I had the device set to yell at me if I exceeded "Zone 2" and it was doing a whole lot of yelling. I'll try for "Zone 1" next time, anyway. The average for the run was under the limit, barely. The maximum was only about 4 bpm too high. Not the worst I could have done. The zones look a little high for the standard estimate, so I'm guessing I set those up myself back in 2012, when I had a refurbished Garmin. I'm getting a kick out of seeing the old data too. Just in case I'd forgotten how much progress I've made - I have a PR for distance on there for 4 miles. And a 5k PR of over 36 minutes. I'm still proud of 2012 me, too. She did all that with another 20 lbs on this body.
I also played a bit more with the settings on the Garmin Connect site. I can't figure out if it isn't meant to add activity calories or if there's still just a checkbox that I haven't noticed. But they're definitely selling the Vivosmart line as activity trackers, so I feel a little bit cheated that only yesterday's run added anything, and after deleting the additional activity (sent by RunKeeper, where I had to delete a second copy of the run as sent by Zombies, Run!) I was only working with 2100 calories, as opposed to a similar day with the Fitbit, which would be 2800. But even with my substandard degree of compliance, that ought to make the weight loss actually happen, right? Feels like too much of a jump, to me.3 -

@MNLittleFinn - Go for the gusto, my friend! I think I have a similar disorder when it comes to doing things. I go all in!
@iofred - I don't think any normal people would ever claim you have to do full marathons or more to be a runner. In fact, there are strict entry criteria you must meet to sign up for those distances. The first is that you must be insane. If you check yes on that box then you are welcomed with open arms.
@autumnblade75 - I'll dig up the link to a Jack Daniels spreadsheet with the magically delicious tables when I get home. I saw a table online once that seemed very different.

Chilly morning here too, in the 40s (I would not say blessed as I am tired of being cold, but it was good for running once we got warmed up). Nice long run catching up with my running buddy who I haven't seen in a couple of weeks. Good for the mental and physical health, and longest run I've done for the last couple of months. Finally strung together a decent running week of over 20 miles.2 -
The weather turned out great for the Garmin Half Marathon today!
Traffic getting in was crazy and the start was delayed from 6:45 to 7:10. I made it just in time.
I set my Garmin to keep me at a steady state effort in my High Aero range (per Jack Daniels). My main goal was to run it at that effort properly, but was hoping to finish in under 3 hours.
The course is a 13.1 mile loop around the northern fringes of Olathe, KS, and is all uphill at a slow climb, with 4 or 5 quick drops. The wind was from the northeast at 15 to 20 mph making the longest stretch of a slow 5 mile climb rough as it was in the runners faces the whole way.
I ran strong until around mile 9 on the last half of that long, windy, uphill stretch but managed my pace through it at a slightly lower effort to let me finish the last part with enough to finish the last couple miles as originally planned.
The volunteers were fabulous and they try really hard to make this a great event which is why I ran this for the 3rd year in a row despite major traffic issues getting out last time (was stuck in the parking lot for over two hours). This year the traffic out was fine after course changes but it exposed the main problem with the location because the changes caused people to be stuck in traffic for over an hour getting in. The is no main way to get in and out without causing an issue. It is kinda sad because it tarnishes the event, which is otherwise fantastic. The fact that it is a very challenging course pretty much means you better keep those runners happy. I hope this event can fix things. I can only imagine two consecutive years of serious traffic woes is quite a mark on the race organizers.

@autumnblade75 - Here is the link where I downloaded the Daniels Tables in spreadsheet form from a couple years back, shared to me by @SonicDeathMonkey80 back when he was posting here. Get your wayback glasses on though, this website looks like it is straight out of 1995. The only thing missing is a midi file playing Macarena while you browse. Look towards the bottom of the section talking about the Daniels Tables for the link.
