trust me I did not eat just 8oz of chicken..... and my steaks were 16 oz or more with lots of butter. I also did not cut out the cheese. I ate more.
Everyone understands that. That still doesn't mean you weren't at a deficit.
Creatures can't survive if their body somebody burns through energy when they're eating more than they're using. Evolution would have prevented any species from going that direction because it would mean they could never survive. Do people doing Atkins long-term vanish or die of starvation? No, they don't. That's because people don't lose weight when they're getting calories equal to (or more) than what their body is using.5 -
If you have never counted calories you can make no such assertion that your consumption now is significantly higher than it was previously. There are so many instances of people who are overweight asserting that they eat "hardly anything" and a lot less than their skinny best friend. It is always, without fail, found to be untrue.
Just because your body is using fat (mostly dietary) as fuel, doesn't mean you are burning body fat and it certainly doesn't mean you are magically burning more body fat than your calorie consumption dictates. That's just not how it works. Keto isn't magic.
And if you are able to eat in a surplus and lose weight then they need to study you because you are unique to every single species of animal in existence.

I can't trust you! Just giving you an example oh how just your bagel and cheese is a lot of calories compared to a decent amount of protein. Then that doesn't even take into account what you were drinking, especially if you cut out beer. Then you have to take into account your other meals that you say where modest, but a modest looking meal fully of carbs is going to be a lot of calories, plus any snacks you cut out. I went low carb to get ready for a trip last year, and was eating 16oz of beef or chicken with every meal with a ton of vegetables, oil, cheese, and peanut butter for snacks and although it felt like I was eating a ton, the calorie count came out lower than what I was eating before. I had to switch to all chicken though because of the iron in the red meat I was getting a nose bleed after every lunch I had.

You should also know that most everyone is genuinely surprised to figure out just how many calories they were eating before they started counting.
It seems clear that you don't really have a good idea because you can eat a 16 oz steak every day. I know for a fact that i could too because I'm counting everything and know my budget. Atkins knows that without carbs almost everyone who does it right eats at a deficit. I eat at deficit with balance...same thing. I've lost 24 in about 2.5 months with a deficit....works like science. 40 waist to 36 which is now loose.
Deficit.4 -
bagge72... I hear you... it worked for me. WHY... because your body switched from what is burns. I was in Ketosis and was burning my body fat. Look, I lost weight, other I know who do not go to the gym have lost weight on low carb diets. Many quit and gain the wight back because of poor eating habits. I get all of that. As for the tubs they sell at walmart... maybe you got a point there. IDK. I am not going to do a study on this comparing all the products out there and how they are. Maybe this whole bloody thing will be a placebo thing in my brain. If I gain a few inches on my chest and loose a few on my waste... hell Im happy because the past few years I was getting more and more unhealthy. So if this is a few $ for a BS Placebo thing and I got a Trainer helping me...yupeeeee! I have no time to build an MLM. I own 2 businesses already and am about to start a 3rd one.
being in ketosis means your body burns the fat you eat and not carbs for fuel. its not going to use just your body fat as fuel.keto doesnt work that way.if so, it would be a WOE to cure obesity without needing a caloric deficit or WLS. even in keto if you arent in some sort of a deficit you wont lose weight. and if you are losing weight without trying then I would get checked for an underlying health issue.3 -

Yeah made it just over a week, where I was eating a ton of protein and vegetables to get ready for a vacation. I just couldn't keep it up. I would make a ton of ground chicken, and put a ton of hot sauce on it, and add oil and shredded cheese, and then have a bunch of green beans, or something like that and I would feel sick after every meal.

actually there is a way to know if you are buying body fat vs the fat you ate. Your body goes into ketosis, your breath smells like acetone and when you pee you can pee on these special six that tell you you are burning fats in your body.

I suspect some people using keto to lose weight have a perception that they are eating more because they aren't as hungry. I was keto for a year and it worked great to keep my appetite in check. Of course it was the calorie deficit that caused the weight loss, but it really did work well to keep me on track.7

Vismal, Im not going to argue with you. I agree about water weight... in fact the first 10lbs is water weight... the next 30 was not. My body switched from burning carbs to burning fat. Im not here to defend the Atkins diet and/or the pro/cons of it. I went from a size 40 pants to 34. I at a 4 eggs every morning, usually some cheese and celery or Atkins bar for lunch and then a 16 oz steak with lots of butter, mushroom and onions and a side salad. My time on the treadmill burned maybe 300 calories. Now if you do the math according to you laws of physics... something is not adding up here. Again, you can convince me that I am imagining my weight loss... but everyone around me is in awe. So the question is... why am I looking to change??? I guess I have been doing some reading and I also want to build muscles. I know carbs are going to be important, in fact I scared shitless to even begin this because my carb intake will go up. But I know building muscles will burn more calories even while Im at rest. So, Vismal, You look like a fit guy and I do value everyones reply but I never ever counted calories on Atkins and ate like a bloody king. Sometimes a whole bloody chicken for dinner.
Your body doesn't "switch" from burning carbs to burning fat. Everyone's body can convert any of the macronutrients into glucose if necessary. In the end, your body will only "burn" glucose to make cellular energy, but how it gets there is flexible.
I do wish you luck with your goals, but there is no way to lose weight if you consume more energy than you expend. It really is a chemical and mathematical equation that applies to everyone, even Atkins dieters. But is easy to underestimate how many calories you are NOT eating when you cut out whole food groups.

Except........I HAVE been in ketosis, my pee HAS smelled, my breath HAS smelled. But I also tracked calories meticulously and guess what? Shock horror, I lost weight in line with my deficit. In fact I lost a little less because I was eating too little and it reduced my NEAT.
But yeah, keto is magic.9 -

Can you explain KETOSIS TO ME? Please do some research before posting an opinion. What you claim is 100% inaccurate.0 -

From Atkins website.
* The average person can expect to lose 1-2 lbs. per week. Results may vary. Weight loss is influenced by exercise, food consumed and diet. *

#5 Myth: The Atkins Diet allows you to eat all the bacon and eggs you want.
Fact: During the kick-off Induction phase, Atkins suggests you incorporate meals with specific amount of eggs and bacon to help you start off successfully. But Atkins is not an egg and bacon diet. In fact, during Induction – and throughout the four phases – the Atkins diet also incorporates a wide variety of lean protein choices that include fish, poultry, lean meat, eggs and soy. However, just because protein is encouraged, following the Atkins plan is not a license to gorge. When following the plan, each of the food groups should be enjoyed in moderation. Following Atkins doesn’t mean you can eat whatever you want as long as it is low carb.
The Atkins Nutritional Approach counts grams of carbohydrates instead of calories. However for weight loss purposes we suggest you shoot for a healthy range. For women that range is approximately 1500 to 1800 calories. For men that range is approximately 1800 to 2200 calories per day. Be sure to limit empty calories and follow the acceptable foods list.14 -
Ketosis still requires a calorie deficit to burn fat..... THIS IS ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE. Please do some Research on this.0

Atkins own website mentions that calories cannot be ignored. So OP I'm glad it's working for you and I hope it's a sustainable way of eating.
If/when your loss slows or stall even Atkins suggest watching your calories.6 -

You can use ALL CAPS all you want, you still haven't explained the scientific biological mechanism by which the body disposes of excess calories eaten just because someone is in ketosis.8

If people in ketosis (which is different than Atkins, btw) will lose weight even when they're consuming a surplus of calories, how do they ever put on muscle? How do they keep from becoming dangerously underweight after they meet their goals?
If what you are suggesting is correct, the end point of ketosis (or Atkins, you seem to be using the terms interchangeably) is death once the body has consumed all of itself that it can.7 -

It is 100% true. I think you need to do a little research.
http://ketogeniclifestyle.com/the-ketogenic-diet-summary-of-lyle-mcdonalds-book/is-a-calorie-deficit-necessary/
"However, looking at the research on ketogenic diets, we see that most individuals will automatically reduce their caloric intake when they restrict carbohydrate to low levels. Therefore, in a sense individuals are losing weight eating ‘as much as they like’, it is simply that they are eating less than they think. Studies of ketogenic diets have found that, when subjects are told to limit carbohydrate intake but to consume ‘unlimited’ quantities of protein and fat, they automatically limit caloric intake and consume between 1400-2100 calories. Any diet which automatically reduces caloric intake without inducing hunger is going to be attractive to dieters."

Nobody is saying that the diet didn't work for you. Clearly it did and other people here have had success with similar plans.
What we're challenging is that you lost weight while consuming more calories than your body could use. That just doesn't match the science of how bodies process, store, and consume energy. This stuff doesn't even rise to the level of a TED talk, it's basic physics and biology.11 -

Nobody is disputing that fat is used as a primary energy source in ketosis. We are disputing that in a surplus you are magically using more calories just because of that primary energy source. If you are eating at or above maintenance the majority of the fat will come from food, the rest will come from body fat, sure but the calories you have consumed will replace or increase that fat again.
Science. actual evidence based science.6 -
anyone want to wager? you can hire someone to follow me around and we can put your claims to the test. I loose, I pay you back double of what you spent on this little test. LOL.

It's been done under controlled circumstances and proven not true by the very organization that thought science would prove it. Google Kevin Hall low carb study.6
