Freezing

I made some mini meatloaves and I want to freeze some of them because I won't be able to eat all of them this week. Do I need to refrigerate them first so they are completely cooled before I put them in the freezer or can I just put them in once they cool down to room temp? Also, what should I wrap them in? It seems like whenever I wrap things in saran wrap or just use a freezer bag they tend to get covered in ice crystals and I can't tell if it has freezer burn or not, so I wind up tossing the food anyway.

I'm trying to learn how to freeze foods so I can start doing it more. I waste a lot of food being single and cooking for one. I'm planning to buy one of those food saver vacuum sealers soon too.

Welcome!

You can freeze them when they are room temperature. If you put them into freezer bags, just suck out the air before sealing and they should be fine.

Don't need to put in refrigerator. Drug store wrap in foil and pop them into a freezer bag (labeled). I do this all the time and it works out great. Just don't forget they are there - won't last forever! Enjoy!
  • I quite often wrap things like loaves in parchment paper and then put them in a ziploc bag. The parchment makes them not stick to anything and works just like wax paper but better!

Good idea if you're planning on buying a vacuum sealer...I have one (foodsaver) and I love it...no freezer burn.
In the meantime, no need to refrigerate first. As the other ladies stated; let cool, foil wrap tightly or place in plastic bag, remove air and freeze..
