Welcome to our May 2017 Cycling Thread!
Previous thread is here
There's no set challenge across participants - this is a mixed-ability / mixed-experience / everyone welcome group. Just pick your own target that you want to achieve this month, post that when you join the thread, and post updates throughout the month as you're working towards your target.
ohhim wrote:If you are new to posting on this thread, or if you are new to cycling, We welcome you! If you are returning from a previous thread, We welcome you, too.
This thread is for anyone who rides a bike. Do you bike to work? Do you pull your children to the park? So you ride weekends? Do you spin, at home or the gym? Do you race crits, ironman, or centuries? Or, are you just starting out and remembering how much fun you had biking when you were a kid? However you choose to push your pedal, you are welcome on this thread.

For May, I'm going to try to start upping my mileage (the main obstacle being my inability to get out of the house quickly in the mornings). I'm going to aim for 500 miles.1
-
Due to work requirements this month, I'm actually lowering my goals (I've got a whole week where I don't expect to get *any* miles). Once I get back, I'm going to get back into training programs and get my mileage back up, but for now, reduce it down to 225mi for the month.0

New biker here. I'm actually getting my bike middle of this week. This kinda means that I won't really have a target beyond "go out for a ride as often as I can and see how far I can get" for this month.4

I would like to get back into it again. Mostly use my exercise bike during the week, but aim to get outside at least once a week, probably on weekends. I want to aim for (since I haven't biked in a while...) I'm going to aim for 100 miles for the month1
-
I just got a new bike! My goal for May is to ride 15 out of 31 days, for at least 30 minutes each time, and to take my dog with me (she's trying to lose some weight too!)1
-
Welcome everyone to another month of riding!!!
I'm reducing my miles in May to 200. I hope to do a combination of indoor and outdoor, but will again be primarily riding indoors on a trainer (and using Zwift).1 -
I'm getting back into cycling after about a 2 1/2 year layoff, so I'll give this a try. My goals are time-based rather than by mileage because I split my time between road and mountain biking, and the pace on a technical trail is so much lower than on the road that the two aren't comparable.
Still building my endurance back up so I'm not really sure what I'm capable of at the moment, but I'll aim for a minimum of 15 hours of riding for the month, with an objective goal of 20 hours.1 -
I'd like to jump in if I may! I've been cycling sporadically for the last couple of years, but I’d really like to get more serious about it this year. I’m looking forward to being capable of some longer rides again. This month I am aiming for 200 miles.1
-
Hello All, I'm getting back into the swing of things and would love to join this challenge, I'm going to aim for 150 miles for the month of May. Good luck everyone!1

January - Achieved 181.79 Miles - No target set - Duration 08:01:34
February - Achieved 353.62 Miles - Target 300 Miles - Duration 17:57:35 - Target Achieved
March - Achieved 238.67 Miles - Target 350 Miles - Duration 12:13:25 - Target Missed
April - Achieved 221.12 Miles - Target 350 Miles - Duration 15:35:39 - Target Missed
Target for this month I will leave at 350 even though I've missed it for the last 2 months because of too many other things going on, but I will give it my best shot anyway as always.
Good luck to every one with your targets.0 -
Great to see loads of new people on the thread this month - welcome all0

Off the mark for May
Wed 03 - 24.05 miles: MTD 24.05 / 500, YTD 1325.51 / 40000 -
I'm in again! Since I managed to ride 200km in April instead of my 150km goal, I'll see if I can repeat that in May.
It's great to see many people joining this thread, happy riding to all of you!

Copied from last month's thread, a plus for the most excellent CycLeagues (online cycling leagues, but not just for boy/girl-racers)Jakess1971 wrote: »Any of the cyclists in here interested in a Summer Challenge?
When: 1st June to 30th September.
What rides will count? Turbo & Outdoor rides all valid via the Strava Club feed where I fetch the data automatically using a system called CycLeagues which you can login to at any time to view the live league standings.
Basically this will be the Summer version of this:
http://cycleagues.blogspot.co.uk/…/cycleagues-winter-challe…
1 point per 50km + 1 point per 500m + 1 point per hour in the saddle.
At the risk of bankruptcy I'll be creating and sending out in the post some real life badges for the Summer Challenge Champion and the winners of the Summer Inter-Cat Cup that will take place during the final two weeks.
Places are not limited, everyone is welcome to play and I encourage you to invite your friends along for the challenge fun.
People are also welcome to join in at any time, the only limitation for new members is that only the last several days worth of activities will count from the point of joining in, everyone from the very casual to the ultra competitive nut job is welcome.
This will be our second year of running this and after an excellent Winter Challenge I'm hoping this will also be a good competitive challenge for all involved.
Interested in joining? Just do the following two things:
1. Join this Facebook group, this is our community for banta and the central point for challenge information:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/118072208643394/
2. Join this Strava group:
https://www.strava.com/clubs/CycLeagues
We have 50 cyclists taking part so far but more is most welcome.
Here are a few screen shots from the system we use.
The leaderboard is separated into cats:
We have a top gear style 'biggest distance' over the challenge date period you can compete on.
You can see how you figure over the full leaderboard
And we even have something for the speed demons
We also compete monthly but the Summer Challenge is a big challenge coming up so I thought I'd offer an open invite before things kick off on June 1st.
Here are the cyclist participants for the month of April:

Thu 04 - 24.05 miles: MTD 48.1 / 500, YTD 1349.56 / 4000

Between work and spring stormy weather, I hope May is better. I only got just over 100 miles last month, way under my goal.0
-
Shooting for 60 miles per week at the moment...so about 300 miles this month including the first 3 days of June.0

First day of the CycLeague Giro d'Italia event today, so well stoked for that.
Fri 05 - 26.62 miles: MTD 74.72 / 500, YTD 1376.18 / 4000
Most of that was into horrible amounts of headwind, occasionally leavened by wild and unpredictable crosswind

An even-rarer 2-ride weekend. CL Giro day 3:
Sun 07 - 31.7 miles: MTD 126.78 / 500, YTD 1428.24 / 4000
Headwind killed my enthusiasm for going much further, but still pretty pleased with that - slaughtered my previous best climbing total (still not exactly going to win any King of the Mountain jerseys, but getting better)0 -
I'm back from work trips and starting a log for May. My goal is a bike ride of any length for every day I am at home. There will be more work travel this month so I only have a fortnight or so. Today's was 17 km on the trainer. Best wishes to all with your own goals!0

First Century ride of the season ticked off - an organised Audax event round the beautiful New Forest. For people not in the UK please note the New Forest isn't new and mostly isn't a forest!
Unfortunately it was far harder than it should have been, unexpectedly chilly but I just felt really off colour. Stomach upset early on wasn't exactly ideal.... But the countryside was absolutely beautiful - loads of bluebells and lots of foals for the wild horses too. Was aiming for 6hrs 30mins but did it in 6:44.
Last 10 miles were a real painful grind.
This is quite entertaining - an animated satellite view of my ride. https://www.relive.cc/view/975278572

Kicked off May with the first Slow Roll of the season. That worked out nicely!
05.01 - 8.3 miles
05.03 - 16.3 miles
05.06 - 20.3 miles
MTD = 44.9 miles1 -
11 km today, cold and windy but at least I got out there2
-
Mon 08 - 23.94 miles: MTD 150.72 / 500, YTD 1452.18 / 4000
Horribly cold with masses of headwind on the way home, and I was definitely under-dressed - froze my kitten off
