Hi all, I'm a transgender man newly on 80mg of testosterone every 2 weeks. Should I enter male or female in order to allow the app to properly calculate my metabolism? Thanks!

MFP uses the Mifflin-St. Jeor calculation to work out your calorific needs. In this calculation, if all else is equal, then males only get 166 calories more than females for their BMR. The biggest differences will come from the fact females are (generally) shorter and lighter than males.

So, tbh, it shouldn't really make much difference which you choose to do your calculation.

    This makes sense to me.

If you have a Y chromosome then you should go with male. If you have two X chromosomes then go with female.

^^ Except that testosterone supplementation will skew that equation.

Probably why posters have suggested take average of male/female for same height/weight and then adjust over time if it doesn't seem right.

No, it really won't skew it all that much. Sure, it can result in gains to athletic performance (which is why it is prohibited in sporting competition) but unless someone is training for such an event it isn't going to magically change how a person is made. Things like body structure, the number of fat cells, height, etc. are all going to be determined by biological gender constraints, so ones metabolism will also follow biological gender.

    ^^^ That.

The biggest determinant of your calorific needs by a long margin is total mass so pick the one you identify with and tweak depending on results over times as necessary.

    Best of luck.

Exogenous testosterone (in males) causes an uplift in metabolic rate however I am unsure if this will be the same for people using it for transitioning.

I would set MFP to female and see how your weight loss goes. If you lose too fast you can always eat more and vice versa.

I threw the flag. At my first read, the response sounded very much like the offensive things being said here regarding a NC bathroom law. My apologies. I was being oversensitive and my first instinct was to protect. I will take more time to read and observe before responding next time.

    Again my apologies.

I can certainly appreciate and respect this. I also think your honesty is refreshing.

It isn't how the flagging system works. The moderator team won't see those random flags, so if you see something you are concerned about, it's better to report it and they can decide if it breaks forum rules, they will remove it. The spam option is for spam bots, and the abuse option is for blatant abuse, such as pornography.

I would pick male. I am not completely familiar with how going on testosterone works but maybe, possibly, it could work similar to puberty. Do you think maybe hormones alone could contribute to a higher percent muscle mass, increasing your metabolic needs slightly?

@Kepplekakes - thanks! My reasoning was the same as @TimothyFish's but I didn't know how to articulate it so I didn't include it. But given the NC bathroom law, I can see how you were confused, and I should have been more clearly supportive or avoided using language similar to what is used in that issue.

I would think the born gender (forgive me if I don't use the correct terminology) as the main difference is that men vs women have naturally different muscle mass. That impact the rate of energy use. I'm not sure it will change drastically as you transition. Its a good question though!

I've talked to my doctor. I'm also ftm. She told me since I'm on hormones to go as male if that helps

Since you are gendering as a male and taking testosterone, then I would choose male as gender. If I picked female, that would go against who or what I felt about me, as a person.

I can't agree. HRT changes your metabolism. Female hormones slow down your metabolism, while male hormones increase it. And not only that - a few weeks on hormones and your blood work will be reflecting your new hormonal balance with haemoglobin, uric acid, got, for showing I'm the right ranges for your gender once you have your endogenous hormones well suppressed.

It's entirely more complicated than that. It will take months to years for muscle/fat to redistribute and for the metabolism to adapt.
