Personally, I had to avoid over-restriction. I never aimed for more than 1% bodyweight loss per week. When I got to the final 10-15 lbs, I aimed for 0.5-1 lb per week (less than 1% bodyweight loss) per week, but I was content with even an average of 0.25 lbs per week (which did happen at one point). I mean slow progress is still progress. Since I didn't aim for rapid loss and kept active, I found that an average of around 1800-2000 calories (total..not net) kept me satisfied and allowed room for some high cal foods that a lot of people cut out. I do pay attention to protein. Usually the aim is 100 to 130 g a day. It just slowly became my lifestyle. I weigh foods at home on a scale. I don't stress eating out. If going to a family gathering or party I eat to maintain that day and do smaller meals before/after.
I put less focus on the scale and more on fitness related goals. Things like how far I could run, weight I could squat, ect. My routines varied a lot, but I always included strength training of some sort and some cardio.
Time is going to pass anyway.
