HooBoy! I have not spent much time here in the last 3 years or so due to various personal life and professional life reasons. I've been back for about a week and it's like I never left when reading this thread...... :D

    LOL...

... As far as the only reason being a deficit, that maybe so. I wouldn't know because I don't count my calories or weigh my food.

... I gave up beer which is very high in both calories and carbs. I do miss beer. Is low carb a magic bullet? No.

...But for some, it's much more sustainable in the long run.

    Starting weight - 277 (Nov 30, 2016)
    Current weight - 215
    Goal weight - 170

    Cheers

    1) A calorie deficit is the entire reason for weight loss, period.

    2) Exactly, you cut your calories and created a deficit. If you get to a point where your weight loss stalls, it is important to understand why.

    3) Actually, long term is where lchf often fails because people don't understand why they were actually losing. For me personally, I have actually found that I needed to increase my carbs as I got much leaner. When I was heavier, I stayed better satisfied on fewer carbs.

    Starting weight - 328 (320 on July 12th)
    Current weight - 178

I hope you have continued success but if you struggle, I hope you understand why so that you can continue to be successful. I also hope others learn this as well and we don't keep seeing frustrated people wondering why they aren't losing weight even though they cut carbs.

So much this! As long as you understand TDEE, the effect of carbs on glycogen etc. how you eat is really no big deal. My personal problem with LCHF is when i did it ages ago to lose weight (and I did) I eventually stalled (now I know it was because I was at maintenance not because I had more than 20g carbs) and then I became deflated (because I was restricting delicious food for 'nothing') then I binged on carbs and gained 7lbs overnight... of course not knowing that carbs have that effect on glycogen I thought wow, all this work and suffering I lost no weight for x weeks and then I gained what it took me over a month to lose because of one slip up. Where do you suppose that put me mentally? If you guessed *kitten* it, then you are correct. It wasn't until I UNDERSTOOD the energy balance that I started to lose weight with the ups and downs of bad days not affecting my mental state or long term goals.

I really don't care what people choose to eat to lose weight but ALL people that lose weight should understand the energy balance because that will save you from the *kitten* it pitfall.
