9 pound weight gain in 3 days!!!!!!!!

I admit it. I ate loads this weekend. Friday to Sunday I ate lots. I also drank a lot of alcohol. I had a lot on so I was eating out all weekend, BBQ Sunday and then out in the evening drinking and eating.
But I'm absolutely horrified to see I'm 9 lbs heavier today. I didn't even put this amount on when I went to America for a week. I'm so mortified I've worked hard to get to that weight. One binge weekend and I'm 9lb up.
Is this even possible?? I don't even wanna eat dinner this evening now. Im a huge fat pig. I'm back to square one now I wasn't even this weight after Christmas!!!

And I've weighed myself on the same scales and everything. I weigh every day0

Water weight...14

Higher sodium (and likely carbs) than usual + alcohol (dehydration = water retention issues) = big weight gain
Chalk it up to a lesson learned and move on.10 -
For it to be fat you would have had to eaten 31,500 calories over MAINTENANCE...which I highly doubt you did. Always do the math.20
-
It's okay - there's no way you ate 9 x 3500 calories this weekend. It's probably water retention from salty food. Just get back to your routine, weigh and track everything. Check your weight again in a few days and it should be back down. Maybe not to where is was, but it won't be 9 pounds up.2

I've never seen weight gain like this in one day. My scales aren't broken either.1

It is primarily going to be water weight. You did not gain 9 lbs of fat over the weekend.
Cease all the negative self-talk. You aren't a huge fat pig and you aren't back at square one.
Get back on track today by eating normally and do not try to punish yourself for having a good time over the weekend.
Hang in there! You'll be alright

Yep, it's probably mostly water weight. Normal. It's possible you gained a bit of fat, but certainly not 9 pounds.
It's also possible there are other variables that changed between your weigh-ins. Different times of day, different clothes, wet hair, did go to the bathroom before one weigh-in, didn't before the other, tons of things can cause differences in weight.
Don't worry about it, keep making good choices, you'll prob see the vast majority of these 9 pounds come off within a few days.
ETA: I see you weigh daily. This is good! I bet you've seen plenty of days that were a few pounds higher than the previous day. You just happened to have three in a row. No big deal.2 -
Relax. A lot of that is just water weight. Take a step back from the ledge and have an extra glass of water or two today. You'll be fine.2
-
Everyone is giving you good advice. This weight gain is caused by water retention and possibly by a larger amount of food moving through your digestive tract. With a few days of eating in moderation and hydrating well, it should come off.3

It's still water weight....6 -
Don't let it beat you down. Its mostly water weight and it can happen. Just keep moving forward and be consistent.
I have put it this way to one of my great friends. You want to fuel up your car with the best gas andtake good care of it. Our bodies we need to fuel it up with healthy foods that give us energy. If we fuel it with crap our bodies will be sluggish and no energy to move.
Hey its a new day , new start!!1 -

this is exactly what it is.

Happens to me all the time. Water is heavy. Check your sodium intake over those days. Its probably 2X or 3X your normal intake. Ironically for me... drinking more water helps get rid of that water weight. I think it helps dilute the sodium down to normal levels. If you get back to normal you will probably loose 6 of those lbs in the next 4 days or so. That is my experience.0
-
Water weight and still some of the extra food mass in your body. Within 24-48 hours at least 1/2 of that will be gone.0
-
I was on vacation last weekend and spent 3 days down at the coast eating out. I gained 6 pounds but guess what? It all went away after a few days because weight and fat are not the same thing. Yes, you gained 9 pounds of weight temporarily but as others have pointed out, you didn't gain pounds of fat. Just relax, get back to normal, and watch most of that go away in the next few days.2
-
Thanks for all your replies... I hope it does go down.. I'll watch what I'm eating and steer clear of bad foods/salty foods/alcohol. Fingers crossed.5

I do this all the time.
I'm sure it's not healthy LOL, but I've definitely had weekends where I've gained 5 - 10 lbs in a matter of 2-3 days. It happens often enough that I don't even panic about it anymore, it's more of like an...ugh, this is going to be annoying feeling lol.
It's the sodium for sure, and then when you add alcohol to the mix, that leads to dehydration, which makes things worse. And if you usually don't eat a high carb diet, it's also probably glycogen weight from all the sugar.
It's scary and kind of disheartening to see if you aren't used to it, but it's not the end of the world.
If I get right back into eating right and exercise, the weight comes back off kind of on its own, in about 5 days.
If I'm very strict with myself, it can come off in as few as 3.
Here's how I do it:
1. I fast for as long as I can that day. This gets my body to use up what I have stored more quickly.
2. When I do eat, I stick to lower carb options, again to get my body to access the glycogen that I already have stored up.
3. I drink a cleansing tea, like senna, dieter's tea, flat tummy tea, etc. Just something to gently but definitively get my digestion moving and help me eliminate the extra stuff.
4. Exercise. I try to get more cardio during this time, because I really want to encourage my body to burn up the glycogen stores and sweat out the extra fluid. If I can, I will do the workout fasted and I will wear a sweat belt to stimulate more sweat.
5. HYDRATE. This one is huge. I drink plenty of water and green tea to help stimulate the release of the water weight, as well as the excess sodium.
And that's it. 3 days later, I'm back to normal lol.
Don't feel bad and don't think you're a pig. You're a normal person who decided to cut loose for a weekend. Get back on track; you're gonna be fine.5 -
It typically takes me about 3 days of eating right and drinking my water to get the water weight back off. No worries.3

A bunch of yikes up here!
1. Don't fast. Just go back to your normal routine. Fasting can start a fast/binge cycle.
2. If you want to do low carb, go ahead. But it isn't necessary.
3. DON'T do this. Waste of money.
4. Exercise is good, but it isn't punishment for your actions over the weekend. Exercise if you want.
5. This one is ok.12 -

I hope you get some help for your disordered eating before you do yourself serious damage7 -

I said what I do lol.
Didn't say she had to do any of these things too.
Also, just to a few of your points:
1. There's nothing inherently unhealthy or mentally damaging about controlled fasting.
2. I've found a few dieters teas that work really well for me, so that's why I mentioned them. Just because they don't work well for you doesn't mean that they are a waste of money for everyone.
3. I didn't say anything about punishing anyone. All I said was that I exercise and emphasize cardio when I'm trying to drop water, which is sound. A good hard sweat session after an off-program weekend does not have to be punishment. If I've been eating more than normal for a few days, I usually find that I have some extra juice in the gym, so why not take advantage of it to hit some PRs, increase my running mileage, etc. You can push yourself without punishing yourself.
People lose and maintain weight in different ways.
Just because you don't want to do something doesn't make it unhealthy or a bad idea.

Because our food is so good that you did not want to restrain yourself. Either that or - Hey! That's not very nice.

Water <> Fat

My journal is open. Go look at my graph for the past couple of weeks and see what happened to me last Monday. My unrecorded weight from the previous Friday was 162.2. I typically only record once a week since I hit maintenance, but I recorded every day last week just to demonstrate how this kind of weight might come off.
The only thing I did differently was to drink a lot of water to flush out the sodium I presumed I'd taken in.0 -

it's water weight. This happened to me one time. I don't recall why, but I was so confused that I created a thread asking about it. For me it was 10 lbs. Within 5 or 6 days it resolved itself. I just made sure I ate no more than 2300 mg of salt a day for that time, and drank A LOT of water.0

Not to be indelicate, but a lot of it is probably food waste and it will disappear as soon as you poop.3

I put on 12lb over a couple days a few weeks back, lost it all over the next week though.0
