State Fair Food

I found an app that shows that calories of food at my state fair. I'm looking through it cringing when I realize how many calories I used to eat at the fair. I would have SNACKS that were well over 1000 calories a piece and main dishes close to 2000 calories a meal. I was easily eating 5000-6000 calories a day for 10 straight days!!
This year I have a plan that will still allow me to eat awesome "fair" food, but stay under 1300 calories a day. I'm looking forward to being successful.

Eating all the food is my food plan at the State Fair.
I treat it like vacation - it's once a year and I'm having what I want.6 -
Wait. You go for ten days in a row? Yeah, okay, your plan sounds better. I go once, maybe twice.5

Just don't take the rides. I'm looking forward to the deep fried avocado.4

I'm avoiding most things that say "deep fried". (But deep fried avocado sounds really good)0

I didn't think that was possible at the Fair4 -
The only food I that I will eat at the fair is a roasted turkey leg, corn on the cob and maybe a hot dog. My only indulence is a beer or 2. If I don't eat anything else the rest of the day, it's all good. Takes discipline.2

Be careful with turkey legs. The ones at my fair are over 1000 calories each.1

This app also tells you how long you would have to walk around the fair to burn off what you eat
I would have to walk around 8 and a half hours to burn off the deep fried nacho balls.0 -

But it would be worth it.3 -
At the State Fair of Texas a few years ago, my daughter carried a pedometer. We spent a few hours and did a little bit of stuff at the fair, and walked 8 miles. State Fair food is fuel!2

That 's why I only eat 1 and essentially nothing else, except the corn and beers, which keeps me under my 2k cal limit.0 -
I'm gonna eat all the foods and drink all the drinks if I get to one this year.3

Dont' know what a state fair is but if it's like RibFest, there is not a hope in hell of me staying anywhere near 1300... by like 11am lol

@mrsnattybulking A State Fair is kinda the same as a RibFest but with more rides, more chance to waste your money on "skill games", agriculture displays and competitions, lots of farm animals (4H), horsemanship competitions, pregnant animals giving birth, and foods that would make a RibFest look like one of the most healthiest eating experience of your life! lol And you are totally right about being way over your calorie count by 11am. I consider a Fair day three cheat days rolled into one, and plan on being extra good on the days before and after...
Seriously, everyone should experience one of the big State Fairs just once in their lives.1 -
Have a donut cheeseburger for me.4

I've always wanted to go to a state fair.1

Magster!
What app is it? I'm going to the Fair on Saturday and would love to use it. I'm on a IPhone and just checked but couldn't find anything. Is it in the Apple App Store or are you Android?0 -
I found that for the Iowa State Fair last year, but because I was concerned about macros and staying low carb (it was unsuccessful for the day). This year, I'm going to use the app to log food, but won't be so concerned about calories. I'm now down to zero carb, so will just stick with the turkey legs and maybe pork chops or steak or something. Diet sodas and water. Plus, I am going to walk again instead of riding the trams or the lift. I may be over calories for the day, but it is only 1 day and I'll be fine as long as I don't eat the wrong kind of foods.1

Are you eating a purely carnivorous diet?2 -
deep fried twinkies............(salivating)0

I show animals at the state fair, so I'm there for 3 days. Luckily one of my favorite vendors does Mexican style ceviche. I tend to get the tostadas or cocktails. So good.2

@FootballFan69 It is the Iowa State Fair Food Finder. It is specific for the Iowa State Fair vendors, but you could use it as a good guide.0 -
Damn the tras fat must be crazy.
Think of the calories in a real Texas sized funnel cake - probably a weeks worth of calories3 -

Here is a label for funnel cake mix: https://cdnimg.webstaurantstore.com/documents/nutrition/382cakefunnl_nutrition.pdf
The only trans fat in the mix would be a tiny bit from the soybean oil (naturally occuring) and the only additional way to add trans fats would be in the oil used to fry it.
Since the FDA ordered them to be phased out in 2015 (to take place over three years), my state (Minnesota) has already made the switch for fair foods. Many vendors were phasing them out as early as 2007. If someone is in doubt about buying from a particular vendor, they can always ask about the oil that is used before they make their purchase.
These things are relatively easy to research, it's worth checking out before you attempt to scare people about certain foods.3 -
As long as you stay off the rides! I stopped riding fair rides a few years ago after seeing the condition of many of the mechanical parts just from passing by.

A several years ago I decided to treat myself at the fair after months of eating low cal. All I had were some tempura veggies, a brat and a funnel cake but good lord did I ever get sick. Way too much fat after not eating much of it, I think it ruined me on fair food forever. Or I would only have one fried item if I were to go again, but there is something about the smell of barns full of animals and fried food that keeps me away from the fair altogether1

I hate fair food. I have a horrible time finding anything edible at the state fair.2

We have the ultimate food at the Wisconsin State Fair! (Throw in a batch of deep fried cheese curds and it is heaven):

I don't even worry about that single day of the year when I actually eat something completely horrendous.
I gotta have my yearly deep fried cheesecake topped with reeses, chocolate drizzle, peanut butter drizzle and powdered sugar. I don't even want to know how many calories are in it.
I do tend to get a portabella mushroom gyro for my actual dinner though. So that's not too bad. And I usually steal some of my fiance's fries.1
