Cheat meal for weight loss?

I've been on and off the weight loss wagon for awhile now. I had a baby 6 months ago and I started dieting and exercising a week ago, down 6 pounds! Yay! My question is would a cheat meal once a week affect my weight loss much?

I only eat about 1000 calories a day, I know I know too little but it is what it is. By cheat meal I mean fried food and or dessert. I'm not gonna go all out the entire day, just one meal.

I'm 5'9" and 245 pounds so I have a lot to lose.

I'm gonna assume that you can't breastfeed on 1000 calories but sounds like me after pregnancy! I'm 5'10". I was barely able to breastfeed. I weighed myself 2 months after birth and i was 264lbs and then when i started MFP i was 248lbs (1 year after birth) and got serious. I followed the 2lbs per week guidelines for 1.5months at 1320calories and after losing 20lbs, i started bad headaches and people told me to up my calories and i feel better but i do not regret the big weight loss start!
If MFP tell you that you need around 1300-1400 calories to lose 2 lbs per week you can basically make your dinner fried food or have desert after your 1000 calories and still lose 2 lbs per week! I don't see a problem at all :). Or you can go 2000 calories 1 day of your week because of a bad dinner and probably still lose over 2 lbs per week....because the other days are so low

i also have desert everyday like another girl said. My son and I each eat a cookie after dinner. Kind of just happened that way and he loves feeding people lol.

It will effect your weight loss exactly as many calories as it adds to your average deficit. But if you're really eating only 1k a day (you said no comments, so no comments) and only talking about adding a dessert or fried food once a week, you will still be losing at a pretty good clip. Just remember - it's all well and good to lose weight fast, but you want to keep it off, too, so make sure you're making changes you can live with.

I'm gradually increasing my calories and I eat everything in moderation other than fried food and I cut back on sugar. Thank you for the input!

I have dessert pretty much every single night, worked into my calories. If I want fried food, I work it into my calories. I don't see the need to cheat.

Why 1000 calories? Are you breastfeeding?

I'm taking phentermine so that is why I only eat 1000 calories, it makes me not hungry for the most part. When I am hungry, I barely eat. Usually half a sandwich with deli chicken breast(2 thin slices) and a piece of cheese. Then dinner will be a chicken breast with a salad and half a cup of rice. Snack maybe a string cheese and a banana. So yes, it's usually under 1000 calories and I do use a food scale for things that I can actually weigh. I'm not breastfeeding.

You can eat anything you want within your caloric allowance and still lose weight.

I'm gonna comment on the 1000 calorie thing. Do you use a food scale? Are you sure that is the amount of calories you are eating? If yes, I'm concerned you will crash and burn on that many calories every day. I'm 5'9, 173 lbs, and I would freak out and eat the entire house after about 3 days on 1000 calories. If you don't use a food scale, I suspect you are eating more than 1000 calories per day.

Phentermine suppresses my appetite so i don't eat much. I don't exercise as much as I'd like because it actually makes me pretty tires but I feel like that is the only way to go for now. I do use a food scale for meat and fish, other than that I usually look at the package of say bread or string cheese. A banana or an apple is pretty close to 100-120 calories so I'm either at or below 1000 calories most days.

No, I'm not breastfeeding. But mfp tells me to eat 2100 which just seems like wayyy to much for me! Thanks for the advice, sounds like I can eat something around 1000 calories extra once per week and it won't affect me! How much have you lost so far??

I'm 61, and I have never known or heard of anyone in my life successfully losing their weight on a 1000 calorie diet. But who knows, you may be the first.
That being said, the cheat meal question gets asked daily here, and it all depends on the calories. One bad meal can destroy a week of hard work, or it can have minimal effect. I would definitely log it.

Well I just started a week ago so I'm trying to lose as much as possible this month, then I will up my calories. I assume that not checking the day after a cheat meal due to sodium helps too lol.

I'm at 225lbs and since my wedding dress is getting big I'm only losing 1 lbs per week for another 3 weeks! I eat at maintenence on weekend days and 1560 calories on week days. Thats why it's been slow in the past 3 weeks.
I also eat back about 50-75% of my workout calories. I bike and squat 3-4 times a week. I have no clue what that medication is for but i hope it isn't forever!

Also why 2100 calories?? Did you imput 2lbs per week? What is your goal weight? Mine is pretty high so I've got about 35-40 more lbs to lose.

Yeah you're on a short term quick fix plan. It won't last when you stop taking the meds. It's interesting that even on medication you still get the cravings. They'll hit you with a vengeance once you stop.

I'm not criticizing your choice just trying to warn you so you're not shocked when it happens. Start now developing a plan for what you're going to do then.

I'm taking it for a few months to jump start my weight loss. And know how much and what to eat, just kind of can't eat more than what I do. I do still get cravings just not nearly as much as before!

It's a weight loss medication. It suppresses your appetite and it's supposed to give you energy but it does the opposite of that for me! My doctor prescribed it to me. And good job on the weight loss!! I'm not planning on using this forever, it's just short term to jump start my weight loss.

The lack of energy is from lack of calories. Please talk to your doctor about the low energy and how few calories you are consuming and try to eat higher calorie foods

You are at 2100 because of the 245 weight. The more you weigh, the more calories you can eat and still have a deficit. The more you lose, the lower your goal will be, but always at least 1200. I lost 150 lbs eating about 1700 per day. Many people on 1000 calories or less report long term problems of hair loss, fatigue, nail problems, digestive problems, etc.

I am gonna try to increase my calories pretty soon, I guess I'm just afraid that it won't work if I eat say 1500-1600 calories. Great job on 150 lb loss!! Any tips??

For sure you will lose at 1500 calories no problem! I wouldn't personnaly go a full month on 1000 at your weight since you arent morbidly obese but that's up to you! Have you weighed yourself since the start?

It's a weight loss medication. It suppresses your appetite and it's supposed to give you energy but it does the opposite of that for me! My doctor prescribed it to me. And good job on the weight loss!! I'm not planning on using this forever, it's just short term to jump start my weight loss.

The lack of energy is from lack of calories. Please talk to your doctor about the low energy and how few calories you are consuming and try to eat higher calorie foods

I never thought of it like that. I take the medicine and it gives me energy at first then I start to slowly get tired, so that's probably why. Thanks for that tip!

For sure you will lose at 1500 calories no problem! I wouldn't personnaly go a full month on 1000 at your weight since you arent morbidly obese but that's up to you! Have you weighed yourself since the start?

I'm probably gonna up my intake to 1500 calories and see what that does for a week or so. Yes I started a week ago and have lost 6 lbs so far.

I lost 60 pounds quickly while taking phentermine (and fenfluramine). I didn't learn healthy eating habits when my appetite was artificially suppressed by taking a legal amphetamine-like drug and I gained all the weight back when I stopped taking it.

Here's my new favorite post about Phentermine: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10329901/phentermine/p1
I have seen a lot of posts on and off about this and other weight loss drugs. I can vouch that they absolutely work. I have lost a lot weight using Phentermine on and off throughout about a 10 year span.

    BUT...

The weight doesn't stay off. And those side effects? They are real.

You could take Phentermine and lose the weight, but you might end up like me. I'm 30 years old, slightly over weight, and have moderate tricuspid valve regurgitation. As in, I might need open heart surgery because my heart was damaged by Phentermine. To be clear, I never took it for more than a few months at a time, was monitored by a doctor, and did everything "right".

My lifespan has likely been shortened to lose a few pounds. Weight I could have lost on my own with a little bit of gumption. It wasn't worth it.

Any tips??

You won't lose 6 pounds per week if you eat 1500-1600 calories per day, but 6 pounds per week is neither realistic nor desirable.

Maybe someone will post a link to the thread for women who can lose weight while eating 1800 calories and this time I will book mark it.

No, I'm not breastfeeding. But mfp tells me to eat 2100 which just seems like wayyy to much for me! Thanks for the advice, sounds like I can eat something around 1000 calories extra once per week and it won't affect me! How much have you lost so far??

Love, you want to lose weight fast, but your body can only lose so much fat at a given time. If you eat too little then you burn muscle for energy. In the end you might have your dream weight much quicker, but will look flabby. Plus it takes a lot of time and dedicated to build muscles, much longer than to burn them for a cheap goal. So why have muscles in the first place? To be able to hold your baby and to do everything you want together with it? having a good set of muscles prevents osteoporosis. Did you know that? And btw, your heart is a muscle too. You're using your heart as energy just so you reach your goal faster. Is that worth it?

You'll learn a lot on these forums if you stick around - while the advice here may seem a bit aggressive you will (if you stick around) realize that everyone here knows what they're talking about (because they have lived it) and you'll soon enough start singing the same tune

I have lost 104 pounds and used a cheat meal in the beginning but only once every three weeks or so. I still logged the calories and made sure I didn't go over maintenance most of the time. Having said that I no longer use a cheat meal. Just a few things to keep in mind. If you start this low (1000 cal/day) you have no way to lower it if you hit a snag. I started on 1200 calories and when I plateaued for 3.5 months I couldn't drop lower. I ended up eating at maintenance for a week and then when I dropped my calories again I went to 1350. I just couldn't face only eating at 1200 again. I am now losing at .5 a week (I only have 8 pounds left to lose). In the beginning we all want to lose fast. We are determined and want it over as quickly as possible. I understand completely. BUT, you actually want to learn something too. The first year I averaged 1.4 pounds a week. I'm 60 years old so my metabolism is probably slower. Please try to up your calories at least to 1200 because you want to be able to keep going for a while and those strict diets often cause burnout. In addition Phentermine is not going to work indefinately. What you will find if you lose a bit slower is that your tastes will change and your stomach will shrink. I can't overeat now. I get sick if I do. I've also learned to appreciate some foods I would never have eaten before. Some types of food that I used to love make me feel awful and I actually understand the expression "this is too sweet" which used to baffle me, lol. Hang in there you are on the right path just smell the roses a bit along the way. Take your time and you will be successful.

    Congrats!

I've been on this journey for a long time - since 2011. Lost 50lbs, and on and off over the years I've put 10-15lbs back on, so I kinda feel I'll always have to use MFP for SOMETHING if I want to keep the weight off. I know where I'm the most comfortable weight wise, but I get lazy and eat more and the weight creeps back. I know what I need to do, but sometimes, mentally, I just don't want to.

During all these little weight loss/gain cycles, I've looked for ways to deal with cravings, feeling deprived, etc. I've never thought a meal should be "cheating" because I've always told myself I can eat WHATEVER I want, I just can't eat as much as I want. So if I want Buffalo Wings, I eat 4, instead of 8 and get a salad. If I want fries, I split them with my BF.

What I've found works for me is banking calories. Eating less on days that you don't have plans, and saving calories for days you want to splurge. It's life, you can't be good 100% of the time and it's nice to have a bank of calories to resort too. I lose .5lbs/week on 1640 calories. I'm 5'11, and currently weigh 160. I tend to average between 1200-1300 calories on weekdays, then on the weekends I can "party" a bit. Drink more, eat more, move less, etc.

Currently I'm on a mission to get 10lbs off before Nov. 11th (my Cancun trip) so I don't feel like a beached whale in a bathing suit! LOL
