This is a continuation of the August thread.

This thread is for anyone who rides a bike. Do you bike to work? Do you pull your children to the park? So you ride weekends? Do you spin, at home or the gym? Do you race crits, ironman, or centuries? Or, are you just starting out and remembering how much fun you had biking when you were a kid? However you choose to push your pedal, you are welcome on this thread.

Not sure myself how far I can ride this month, since I'll be away from my bike for half the time...

Last month I rode 355km - maybe 200km will be doable, so I'll make that my goal.

    Hello,

I do some riding, mostly every day. I don't go all that far but I do like to get some climbing in. I have a couple of road bikes but these days I am pretty much obsessed with my mountain bike.

Don't know what to think in terms of a goal. Maybe I will just journal my riding until I can think of what a goal should be. I used to try for those Strava climbing goals. I might try something like that.

Maybe mostly we can reinforce each others biking interest and enthusiasm by talking bike rides.

Hi! Mountain biker here too! I just joined this challenge in July and pretty much just guessed on a goal. I made mine hours instead of miles because a lot of times I ride with a group who chooses the route and some of the routes are a lot shorter but much more technical.

I'm new to mountain biking just this spring but am totally addicted!

    Welcome!

For my goal this month I'm dropping down to 15 hours because I'm getting a puppy next week which will be keeping me busy!

    September Goal - 15 hours

First weekend of spring. Bit of a bicycle ride on Saturday. :)

We had everything out there ... cloud, lots of cloud, a few rays of sun, wind, rain ...

This was a 'route checking' ride for an event we're hosting at the end of October. There will be a few changes ... but this is why we like to ride these things in advance.

    Nouveau Trois!
    Distance: 161.9km
    Elevation: 1,124m
    Moving Time: 8:11:28

    Estimated Avg Power: 71w

    Speed; Avg: 19.8km/h | Max: 51.1km/h

Started off the month with a ride just under 40 miles but included a couple of nasty hills.

Funny how competitive and childish riders are!
(Yes that definitely includes me, one of my mantas is - You are never too old to be childish.)

On the long Staple Lane climb passed two young riders riding casually and chatting who suddenly perked up when this old fart overtook them. Their talking stopped, now standing up and breathing hard they re-passed me halfway up the steep bit. But my inner chimp escaped and I dug in and got them back and pushed hard right to to top. Gave a cheery "tough old climb this isn't it?" as I passed while desperately trying to hide how hard I was actually trying. ;)

Then the nasty Crocknorth Road - a horrible hill that starts with no momentum at all and straight into an everlasting bottom gear grind, very scenic though. http://veloviewer.com/segment/629896

I am off to kind of a slow start this month.
Went out for some hill repeats on the 1st but encountered mechanical problems.
Holiday intervened last two days. Owed my wife an outing. Each of us lost 5 pounds in August so we got to go to an antique hotel. Maybe I should put a picture of antique on here.
I think I will try and climb some tomorrow. Probably hill repeats.

Ok. I am on the board now with 1037 feet of climbing. Let me see if I can converge on an accounting format ...

    9/4 - 1.3 hours - 10.4 miles - 1037 feet climbing

10 miles ain't nothing to write home about but the climbing ain't too slouchy. Maybe I will get out again tomorrow. My bike is still kind of funny mechanically. The crank arm isn't wanting to stay put. My tendency is wanting to wrench tighter and tighter. It is aluminum or some kind of soft alloy though. I can ruin that kind of stuff without thinking about it.

Heh, looking at Staple Lane and Crocknorth, man o man that is some climbing! I see some 18% grade in there. I will see if I can find me something like that tomorrow to punch around on.

Hill repeats in the neighborhood. Don't know what the grade is.

Talking of challenges - here's a very extreme one!

Noticed that Jasmijn Muller's attempt on the Lands End to John O'Groats record has started today.
(For the non-Brits that's from one end of Great Britain to the other.)

The current Ladies record for LEJOG 843 mile trip is 52 hours and 45.

If that goes well Jasmijn will continue to try and capture the 1,000 mile record, which currently stands at 2 days, 16 hours.

    Follow her progress at https://www.lejogrecord.co.uk/

    Amazing and awe inspiring.

Hill repeats in the neighborhood again. Not particularly exciting but better that couch potatoes.
Heh, Garmin says I did a couple of hundred feet better on climb than last session though.
I don't see how that could be. I did like 19 repeats each session. I wind the same pattern through the neighbor hood. Heck, I will take it though. GPS says what it says.
I ran my heart out a little bit tighter.
Yard work the next couple of days. Maybe no riding. Sigh.

    9/4 - 1.3 hours - 10.4 miles - 1037 feet climbing
    9/6 - 1.2 hours - 10.3 miles - 1260 feet climbing

A big week for me, but not in regard to cycling - it was my last day at work on Friday so I'm now retired and able to spend more time doing things I want to do. :)

I'm currently doing a little experiment to try and improve my pace.... I've got a natural feeling pace and intensity which tends to make most of my "normal" rides just over 16 mph. So for a while I'm consistently pushing a bit harder chasing average speed to try and make 17+ mph my new normal pace.
Just because I'm retired doesn't mean I intend slowing down. ;)

Finally got a good climb in. 13 mile bike ride ain't nothing to brag about but 2,000 feet of climbing ain't couch potato. I think my climbing heart rate might have been 71% HRmax or so. Not too ambitious but kind of alright.
Yard work over the past few days wasn't too slouchy. 650 squares of sod. 90 rolls I think 40 pounds. That is a couple of tons. You do the math. I am worn out. I think I will water it. That part is easy.
Planting sod is a personal record for me.

Congrats to @sijomial. I think I heard you say retired. Welcome to the club. Now our work is cut out for us. Heh!

    9/4 - 1.3 hours - 10.4 miles - 1037 feet climbing
    9/6 - 1.2 hours - 10.3 miles - 1260 feet climbing
    9/10 2.5 hours - 13.4 miles - 2032 feet climbing

    ......... 5.0 hours - 34.1 miles - 4332 feet climbing MTD

    Thanks!
Downside is I can't use the "too busy" excuse any more.... ;)

I'll be in the same boat (looking to increase pace- and envying the retirement aspect- Congratulations). My plan is to head back to a space that's worked for me before, ZWIFT. For those of us non-retirees ride time is shortening along with daylight hours. Finding ways to fit riding into schedule.. I've found cat-and-mouse of Zwift riders who ride during similar times, is a wonderful way to pick up the pace, either because you're chasing someone, or, pedaling faster in order not to get caught :-)... Perhaps we'll see you, and get a chance to ride together, albeit virtually..

Just because I'm retired doesn't mean I intend slowing down. ;)

Just now joining Sept thread. Down with some flu bug and first day of feeling human and looking forward to jumping on trainer tomorrow to spin out legs and hopefully sweat out the last of demon flu bug.

Weekly goal for Sept starting out low with 75 miles or/ 6 hours. If I can squeak out 1k-1.5K climbing it's a double bonus.. Since daylight is waning, will start relying on the all autumn/winter fall back ( the trainer, aka, turbo trainer).. Use to be boring as all get out, now with super neat virtual simulation apps its actually rather fun. Anyone else out there on Zwift? Plan a meet-up ride?

@crumpin0828 - I been a little bit curious about that zwift. I should surf out to that page before I sit here and speculate. I think you have to by a special spin bike to do it. Seems like a bike like that would have to somehow be calibrated to energy or something. Otherwise how would pace or hill be valid. Then again maybe it has a knob on it somewhere that would allow an old guy to handicap his game somehow. That'd be alright.

Oh yeah! I see they got a heart rate power meter on their page. If it is like the HRmax = 220 - (your age) and you could race against scaled heart rates that might work for me. I been known to go crazy that way. Orange Theory fitness is kind of that theme.

Power is calibrated by hr monitor combined w speed cadence sensor. Zwift home page explains how it works and what's needed to get started. Bike ( road, mtb. Cross bike? Hybrid, bike), Trainer (traditional or smart traine, which calibrates power), zwift application subscription- there's usually a 7 or 30 day trial), computer, smart devise (tablet or iPhone) to control which direction you turn on the interactive course. Yes it does sound like a lot and a bit convoluted- but once you get it down you realize it's pretty simple and straight forward.

Power is the only variable that matters in Zwift. Your speed in the game is derived from power output. Cadence determines how you sit on the bike, Cd. You only need HRM for racing in Zwift. It's way to disqualify cheats. For best game play, get a smart trainer. HR to power relationship is as par with HR to calories. You're better off using virtual power based off speed, cadence, and trainer resistance relationship. It's far more accurate and consistent.
