Aspartame still triggers an insulin response. It's garbage don't eat it at all. Too much insulin leads to diabesity. Lol63

But see, it doesn't. There are thousands of diabetics all over the country who track their insulin/blood sugar quite closely. And every single one of them would be able to definitively tell you if drinking a diet soda caused them problems. That is literally not how it works.
And the American Diabetes Association suggests that diabetics have diet drinks to help them stop actually spiking insulin with sugary drinks.34 -

Uh...no...no it doesn't. If it did, diabetics wouldn't be able to drink it...and diabetics drink it.
Also, eating everyday food will trigger an insulin response...because that's how your body is supposed to work...if you don't get an insulin response then you're unwell and your body isn't functioning properly...little research perhaps...18 -

Too much protein will trigger an insulin response, so what? Insulin response is the body's natural reaction to food intake and the means that is used to store energy in the muscles (insulin is the gatekeeper to storing glucose in the muscle for later use as an energy source).
Insulin does not cause diabetes - if it did, why would the medical community use insulin as part of the treatment for diabetes?!?!?16 -

Do you have any evidence to back up this claim? I mean, I'm a former T2D that reversed all my diabetic markers from being on a consistent energy deficit and being physically active, also reducing bf% and improving body composition. I was on a moderate-high carb, low fat diet for the majority of my diet and drank a buttload of diet soda. I have lab results indicating insulin sensitivity with basal insulin as low as 2 IU/mL with a HOMA-IR score of 1.2 currently. So.. where does aspartame or diet soda play a role in insulin response and subsequent diabesity?19 -

This also. Too much insulin cause hypoglycemia, which is low blood sugar. Not diabetes.
Diabetes develops from insulin resistance, not overproduction. Diabetes is caused by a bunch of different things to varying degrees, like obesity, age, a bad diet, and genetic factors.

It depends on you. While diet soda has no calories, some people find that it elevates hunger levels and leads to overconsumption of calories. Other people do not experience an increase in hunger levels when drinking diet soda.
By itself, diet soda will not cause you to gain weight. It's how it affects your hunger levels and how you respond to those hunger levels that makes a difference.10 -

I don't get how people say also soda is bad cause it makes you wanna eat more cause you don't feel full. But my belly does the opposite LOL
Same here. I drink a diet coke to stave off the munchies since I usually feel so full after a 0.5L bottle that I couldn't eat a single bite without feeling uncomfortably full. Works quite nicely too as it also hits that sweet tooth of mine just right.11 -
You find 2 extremes on MFP
- OMG, everything I eat and drink is going to kill me!
- You can eat anything on Earth in any quantity and nothing will hurt you, ever: it is all just a conspiracy against the food industry
Find your comfort zone somewhere in between...35 -

Maybe it's a portmanteau for "diabetes and obesity"? I mean, I'm sure it's not, but it could be.14 -

Nobody on MFP has ever endorsed consuming isotopic/molecular sodium12 -

If you are feeling satiated by soda and/or no calorie drinks, keep doing it. Because there is no science to support what your parents say. There are probably magazine or newspaper article.3 -

There is a guy on MFP (probably with a bare torso profile pic) who would mock someone for refusing to put that in their coffee...19 -

This reminds me of how I feel when people tell me carrots have too much sugar. I'm pretty sure I didn't get fat because of carrots and I'm pretty sure you didn't get fat because of diet soda.
That being said if they don't make you feel healthier make a different choice. Figure out your calorie targets, hit them almost every single day. Weight will be lost. Simple as that.
Good luck and I'm sure you'll do great!12 -
you beat me to it! Love this guy.3 -
Is any one else bothered that an experimental chemist doesn't wash his hands?4 -
I know there is a lot of information out there saying it is ok and other information saying it isnt. I chose not to consume artificial sweeteners because I personally believe extensively processed foods arent as healthy.
I dont think it necessarily effects weight loss although I read somewhere that artificial sweeteners screw with our perception of what sweet tastes like since they are so much sweeter than say fruit sugar.25 -

Medical Definition of diabesity
: obesity associated with diabetes : the state of being very overweight or obese and of having type 2 diabetes or one of the conditions (such as insulin resistance) that precedes it
Hectic work schedules, stress, cheap and easy fast food and sedentary lifestyles glued to the television set are some reasons why people fall into the trap of “diabesity.”—Meena Murthy, The Home News Tribune (East Brunswick, New Jersey), 15 Nov. 20116 -
For some of us, the sweet flavor of Diet Coke piques our appetite. I am one of those so I gave up Diet Coke and have more control over my eating. No, Diet Coke wasn't directly making me fat, it was making me feel hungry. Eating too much in response was making me fat.13

I can do you one better. Here's my ticker AND my diabetes has gone into remission since subbing diet soda for the sugary stuff. (Although you have me beat because you are at goal and I am still working on it)

I assumed that was an unintentional mashup from previous poster, I still do, in fact - but knowing it has made it into the M-W annals is interesting!
I am totally going to use diabesity now instead of the previously popular Beetus.
