Hey guys. Was just wondering if anyone tracks steps and how many they usually do in a day.

I just got back from walking around my circle drive in the dark in my jammies to get the last 300 steps in. I really like my Fitbit! I do a minimum of 8000 steps a day. I started a month ago and it's getting easier and easier and really making me happy.3

I try for 10k a day, mostly to have a couple hundred extra calories to eat.2
-
I usually do 17000-19000...0
-
So far today I have done 25794 steps. My daily average is 24,000 ish. A bit extreme but what else can I say but "I like to walk ..... a lot!"1
-
I try to get between 12,000 and 18,000. It gives me 450-650 calories extra to eat.0

5000-8000 steps daily1

When I'm very busy I walk around 5000 a day or less. When I'm free I walk around 12000.
I use S Health on my phone to track my steps. I only track steps from intentional walking, not steping left and right around the house.0 -
I get points from my health insurance company as follows:
1 point per 1000 steps in a day
50 extra points for getting over 50,000 steps in a week
50 extra points for getting over 100,000 steps in a week
So I can earn up to 201 points per week by getting over 100,000 steps. I aim for three days of 15,000 steps and four days of 14,000 steps per week, which is 101,000, but I usually exceed it.
The points can be redeemed for gift cards. I have an Amazon habit, so it's worth it to me. 2500 points gets me a $25 Amazon gift card (I can do other things like get a flu shot for points, too -- I'll probably get 13 or 14 gift cards this year).
I don't count the calories from steps separately, though. I just wear my Fitbit when I work out and I choose home exercise DVDs based on how many steps I need to reach my goal for the day (e.g., Focus T25 Alpha Cardio is about 3000 steps). I probably only get 4,000 to 6,000 steps outside of deliberate exercise but the Fitbit site can't tell the difference.6 -
I work from home, so I try to get out most days and track at least 10K steps outside of my apartment. But I do that just to move and have extra workouts in during the week--not for free calories.0

Wow these people are big walkers! Lol. I have a desk job and am pretty sedentary, so if I didn’t put in any extra effort, I would only get in about 2000-2500 steps in an average day. But sometimes I try to take a walk around the neighborhood which gets me up to 6000-8000 steps depending on the day.0

If I don't try I would get 2,000-3,000 steps. That is where I started. I gradually increased my steps.
My first goal was getting 5,000 steps. That is pretty easy now so my minimum step goal is 8,000.
I frequently get around 10,000 steps sometimes more. I probably won't increase much at this point as I don't do challenges or get rewards. It is enough.1 -
At first, without trying I got 1,500-2,000 steps.
Now my default if I don't try is about 4,000-6,000 steps, I'm just a little bit more active by default without trying now since introducing some mindless walking during certain tasks and it became a habit.
Usual days with exercise 8-10k steps
Some days when I have a long run or something more substantial I get 14-16k.
Not as active as some here, but I'm pleased with my effort so far.3 -
Days I don't run, I'm lucky to hit 5K steps. But days I don't run I'm either on a bike or lifting, so I don't fuss. Run days I'm minimum 15K steps.1
-
On gym days I can get between 9K-12K. On rest days I shoot for 5K at a minimum and sometimes will reach my goal of 10K.0
-
I average 15,000 a day. Some days it's 12,000, some days it’s 20,000 or more. Never less than 10,000 unless I’m sick. I started out at about 1,300 steps a day. Basically I didn’t move much. Now I can’t take sitting for any length of time.1
-
When I started losing at the beginning of the year, I was usually hitting about 5k. A couple of months ago I started focusing on fitness more, and upped my goal to 7500. Just today I upped again to 10k.1
-
Nice job everyone on all those steps.
The sample size is small but have been tracking for a couple of weeks now. My day depending on how busy it is can be anywhere from 5k -25k step0 -
On days that I work on the farm, I get 10,000 easily.1
-
When I started I was doing 6,000 to 8,000 per day. Every Monday I look at my past week and pick a day I was over my step goal and round it to the nearest 500. In 7 weeks I am now doing 13,000 to 17,000 (Some days even more) I bought a treadmill and walk at least 30 minutes on that. I make myself walk around the building at least once an hour and walking to the work mailbox is 600 steps round trip. I usually do that twice day.0
-
I get at least 10,000 outside of purposeful exercise (my elliptical doesn't count towards my daily step goal).0
-
8000-12000 depending on what type of workout I do. I get 6000-8000 outside of workouts having a desk job and a commute0
-
12000 to 15000 steps a day0
-
I get minimum of 20k steps but my goal each day is to try for 25k. On really good days I'll shoot for 30k but that's not as common.1
-
I work at a desk, too, but I either take the train (about 4 miles walking round trip) or cycle (about 11 miles round trip), I make sure I get a 2+ mile walk in during the work day, and if I haven't made my 250 steps/hour (I love my FitBit!!!) I go up and down the three flights of stairs in my work building. I have been known to refuse rides from events about a mile from my home, just to 'get my steps in', even in the rain! I get in anywhere from 15000 - 30000 per day.2
-
Have a fitbit which is set to 10,000 by default, a day in work I can hit that without doing anything else so turned it up to 15,000. Again a day at work I can just about hit that but 30mins on the treadmill after work makes sure I'm way over more often than not. Trying to hit it on a rainy day off work is much harder though (I do try).0

Wow! Really?
How do you manage to walk so far every day?
I walk about 2400 steps in a mile. At that rate, 10k steps would be about 4 miles and 24k steps would be 10 miles.
I normally only walk a few miles a day at most and, even when I go on a hike, it's usually only for 3-5 miles.
Went on a 7 mile hike (16,276 steps) today (w/a max elevation of 900 ft) and I'm beat. I could never do 24k steps everyday.
Kudos to you if you really do.

I am all over the map. Rarely more that 25000, rarely less than 6000. I'd say I average 100000
-
I aim for at least 8,000 - 9,000 'normal' daily steps, but try to, at minimum, go 15,000 steps a day by incorporating 3-5 miles interval walk/jog daily to bump me up to about 18,000 a day.
If I am burnt out and can't handle the gym, I skip the interval training and walk my dog for 35 minutes to an hour to make up the difference. Even at 'dog walking' pace (stop, sniff, stop, sniff), I end up obsessing a little and won't stop until I have reached my normal goal.
I have a desk job as well, but find the following helpful in getting at least 8,000 regular steps:- I walk my dog in the morning
- I park two blocks away from Starbucks to pick up my coffee
- I park in the farthest parking spot away from my work entrance
- I take a long walk at lunch
- If I stop of groceries or on errands, I park as far away as possible to the door
- At the grocery store, I walk around the outside and up and down each aisle (not needing anything)
- I walk the dog when I get home
It's amazing how many steps you can actually get in when you park farther away from things. Makes you realize how little we work for anything anymore!!!0
