This is a continuation of the September thread.

If you are new to posting on this thread, or if you are new to cycling, We welcome you! If you are returning from a previous thread, We welcome you, too.

This thread is for anyone who rides a bike. Do you bike to work? Do you pull your children to the park? So you ride weekends? Do you spin, at home or the gym? Do you race crits, ironman, or centuries? Or, are you just starting out and remembering how much fun you had biking when you were a kid? However you choose to push your pedal, you are welcome on this thread.

I've been away from MFP for a couple of months.

After riding around 400 km in August and 300 km in September I've committed to ridding 625 km in October to raise money to fight kids cancer. So far I've ridden over 60 km, but the rain is bucketing down now so I think today will be a rest day.

@Machka9 Congratulations on finishing the Petit Year Round Randonneur ; sounds really challenging!

@mtb000mtb That's a great goal you have for this month, awesome :)

I'm still not sure what to set as a target. Summer is definitely over... Maybe 150km.
The first 10.7km are done; a really rainy commute yesterday.

@_nikkiwolf_ is it just me or is it getting lonely here? Where I live we are approaching the end of the 4th day of October and we have a total of 3 participants. From what I recall there was more activity last time I did this challenge.

You're right, it's gotten a bit more quiet since spring...

I'm still hoping a few more people will show up.
Like @AgileK9 @bocasdelbadbob @crumpin0828 @huskydoo @kcjchang @JMTRAIL2015 @Rogus1 and @sijomial , who all participated last month - I'm sure they are all planning to cycle in October too, maybe just had a busy few days?

And maybe @pedermj2002 would like to join for a few miles too...? :)

Or @35dollars and @Ohhim - after all, I always quote their posts to open the challenge thread

Feel free to nudge / invite anyone else you thing might be interested - it's more fun (and more motivating) when there are a few more people, that's for sure!

Goal for the month is 36 hours. Mostly indoors after the 15th for next 16 weeks, 2 eight weeks build block, to rebuild my fitness.

Anyone doing the Death Ride, Tour of California Alps? Going to finish in 2018 even if it kills me. (2016 DNF, 4 passes, and sidelined this year by shoulder surgery.)

    Still here, still riding. :)
Day off exercise today to play with my new/old toy. Got my old motorbike back on the road and went out for a couple of hours. I put motorcycling on hold when I started cycling seriously but now I'm retired I should have time for both hobbies.

Since 2012 I've cycled over 12,000 miles and only ridden my motorbike about 250 miles so my skills are a bit rusty. 0-60mph on a bicycle = never, 0-60mph in 3 seconds on my motorbike means I have to re-calibrate my speed perception and vision more than a little bit!

Aiming for 400 miles cycling this month.

My first fitness challenge with MFP so not sure if it's too late to participate this month; if it's not too late, I'm totally in! I love cycling but the incoming Canadian winter is not forgiving..I figure this challenge would make me accountable/ more motivated to cycle as summer fades away & temps start to drop.

(Will edit w more info later on!)

Still here. Still read the threads everyday. Just been super busy at work with a killer project with crazy deadlines. Riding has suffered because of that. Still riding just not as much.

Hi guys! I used to cycle middle distances (metric centuries, MS-150s, that sort of thing) but haven't for years. I'm building back up slowly, taking October to do cycle classes to get my legs used to going around in circles again. :) October's goal is 10 classes (I also do BodyPump and yoga).

    What does everyone ride?

    So far this year:
    Jan-17 161.62
    Feb-17 490.52
    Mar-17 396.53
    Apr-17 252.32
    May-17 438.83
    Jun-17 410.87
    Jul-17 484.85
    Aug-17 150.67
    Sep-17 460.14

    This month, 48.07 / 428.4, YTD 3294.42 / 4000

Still on target to break 4000 miles for the year, which I'll be very pleased with

Hope your knee is holding up, now that you're back on the bike

@Machka9 Congratulations on finishing the Petit Year Round Randonneur ; sounds really challenging!

Thanks! It was a good way to keep on track throughout the year. Each month, we had a ride to do, and if we opted for an easier 50 km one month, we would have to make it up with a more challenging 150 km at some other time. :)

It also gave me the chance to create a set of routes. The routes have to be "officially approved" and on the list of available rides. When we started the challenge there were only a few routes and most of them were really difficult with massive amounts of climbing.

Now we've about doubled the amount of official routes available and there's a nice mix of relatively easy to very difficult so we've got some variety.

The last one we did (the 50 km I described in my first post here) was one of my designs, and without the wind, it would probably fall somewhere in the middle of the difficulty range. With the wind, it was a lot more challenging!

Beautiful bright and sunny Autumn day - perfect for hitting some hills. So I did four big climbs in the Surrey Hills. Not a long ride but a hard ride with 2874' of elevation. Garmin gives me a "recovery time" of 72hrs. Right now I think my quads would agree with that!
    uq0u9wmv36vf.png

Up Box Hill from one direction but then dropped down to the bottom again to do the iconic Zig Zag Road climb which isn't hard (steady 5% for 1.4 miles) but gives great views. This is the view looking south when you reach the top.
    6etl6a1e461n.jpg

Then long climb up to Ranmore Common - the steepest bit is right at the top. 0.9 mile and 7% average.

Was going to do the tough Whitedown Lane climb but the road was closed so detoured to Crocknorth Rd instead (10% average).

Mountain biking is my buzz, mostly social but some competitive events.

The road riding is just for fitness so I can go harder on the trails. It's easier to fit extra commutes into my week than to find time for an extra trail ride.

    Pair of hybrids:
"Boneshaker" was my station commuter but also the first bike I did a Century on. (Boneshaker because it's a really harsh ride!). I do some towpath trundles on it alongside the Thames.
Boardman - lovely ride for local urban trips and errands, carbon forks and disc brakes. Did some long distances on it before I got my......

    Pair of Specialized Roubaix:
The red Roubaix now called "Lazarus" was broken in two by a dozy car driver using me as a speed bump.
Replaced with a disc braked version as part of my insurance claim. Mostly used Autumn to Spring.

Lazarus now rebuilt with new forks and some fast carbon wheels - my main summer and Audax event ride.

I bought it last year (used) - the frame is a "De Rosa Merak" from 2003 or 2004 afaik. Sometimes I dream of a fancy lightwight carbon road bike with disk brakes and everything - but if I'm perfectly honest, I'm not riding fast or far enough that I would actually *need* it

Today was the first longish ride after hurting my knee a month ago. A little more than 40km in beautiful sunshine.
It really was a perfect autumn day, but really cold! I wasn't dressed warm enough, not at all. I had to stop at the first shop I came accross and buy a cheep set of fleece shirt and gloves to put on top of what I was already wearing, or I wouldn't have lasted longer than half an hour max.

@_nikkiwolf_ nice, always wanted a De Rosa but got a Eddy Merckx Corsa instead (and wish I still had it).

Hi! Sorry I’ve been MIA the last couple of weeks. I got a new puppy mid September then came down with the death plague! I didn’t ride at all the last two weeks of the month. I’ve been back on the bike in October but haven’t had time to post at all. I will tally up my rides tomorrow (chasing the pup around tonight). I don’t have a goal for October because our weather here is so variable. I did go on my first night ride tonight and that was fun. Last night a couple friends of mine took our dogs on the trails. He did really well especially for being 11..s0h2vmanp8xm.jpeg

I've been a bit slack about logging as I go, I'll try to do better for the rest of the month. I'm happy with where I'm sitting relative to my goals.

@AgileK9 beautiful pics. Makes me long for a dog in my life again but I don't have the time to make it work at the moment.
