Only Lost 30 Pounds In 1 Year

Well, I lied. It took me a full year to lose 27 pounds.
I am 23, 5'5, and started out at 204 pounds. I have been counting calories (1700) and working out 5 days a week (2 days weightlifting, 3 days cardio). I'll admit I fell off the wagon quite a few times at the beginning, but never for longer than a week. I've figured out that I've averaged about .5 pounds a week, which seems quite small...
Seeing the scale move SOOOO SLOWLYYYY is a bit discouraging when it seems to take 6 months for other people to lose 100 pounds or whatever. I'm happy that I am still losing, but I just wish that it was more in line with other people. I feel like when I get closer to my goal weight my weightloss will stall even more, making it almost impossible to make that little number budge. I guess I don't really have a question, just came to b*tch and moan

People who lose a lot of weight really fast tend to gain it all back. You are doing this the right and healthy way, so you will be more likely to reach your goal and - more importantly - maintain a healthy weight. You are doing great, just hang with it.13

Eh, f other people. 30 pounds lost is awesome. So is 27! I get the frustration, I really do, and it’s hard not to compare yourself to other people. I know I do! But remember that even if you never lost another pound and “just” kept that 30 pounds off for the rest of your life, you’d be way ahead of an imaginary version of yourself who lost 100 pounds in six months and then gained it back.9

Victory #1: you don't weigh more this year than you weighed last year
Victory #2: You LOST 27 POUNDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't compare yourself to other people. You are not them and they are not you. Slow and steady weight loss is weight loss. You are winning the game, which is single-player.
Your weight loss is quite likely to slow as you get closer to goal and that's perfectly normal and OK. You want a downward trend. Weight loss is a marathon, not a sprint.
Keep going and you'll get there.9 -
Maybe focus less on the scale and more on other aspects of yourself. Like how much stronger you've become from working out. Or how well you're able to control how much you eat.
I used to be obsessed with my weight, but I like to focus on how much longer I'm able to run on the treadmill, and how I am actually more in control of what I eat. I used to have really bad eating habits and it's refreshing to know I've overcame them and enjoy eating foods that are actually good for me now.5 -
I'm averaging about 1 lb every 10 days or so, since about May. I'm older, shorter, and weigh more than you. Conventional wisdom indicates it should be coming off faster, but conventional wisdom is wrong. I'm being very careful about my intake and working out, and it's still that slow. I'm not discouraged by the slow loss. It's the most consistent downward trend on my weight in 15 years. I see lots of people in my timeline losing 2 or 3 lbs a week. Good for them, I really am glad for them. Would I like to lose faster? Sure. I'd also like to have long legs and naturally curly hair. But is it more important to me that I lose at someone else's rate or at what is a steady, consistent, and do-able rate for my own body? That's an easy question.

be proud of what you HAVE achieved - it is awesome-3
-
So you had, on average, a 250 calorie per day deficit and were consistent enough with that to lose 27lbs. That's an achievement to be proud of!
I lost close to 50lbs my first year. The next 18 months I have lost so far about 20lbs. I had other stuff going on that meant maintaining the deficit I would have liked was harder (psychologically) but I still lost. I didn't gain and I didn't stagnate. I kept on trucking. Kept on tracking. Kept my eye on the prize. And now I can see the end but it's cool if that moves away a bit too.
Just keep going. Tortoise and the hare.9 -
Have you updated your goals on here? Once you put in your current weight will change your recommended intake from what they recommended 30 lbs ago.4

That is not only... that’s awesome! Well done keep going and you will reach your goal...remember slow and steady wins the race so keep going. Feel free to add me I’m 25 and 5’5” trying to lose 25 lbs1

I actually haven't, I should have thought of that! Will go update now and see what the new recommendation is1 -
Thanks everyone! So glad I decided to post on here instead of bottling these frustrations up. This is such a supportive and encouraging community! I feel better about my slow but steady progress now, a loss is a loss10

You don't have 100 pounds to lose. Someone who does will lose a lot faster than someone who has 30 or 50 to lose. I lost 100 pounds in 14 months, but it took another 14 to lose the last 50. And I never "fell off the wagon." Those choices to go off your plan can definitely add up and slow down your progress. 27 is great progress for a year and it would make no sense to stop now just because someone else lost faster than you. Congrats!4

Did your arms always look like that??? Even though 27 pounds doesn't seem like a great deal it really is. Yes, you could have gained, you could have stayed the same but YOU LOST 27 POUNDS I think you should take measurements and pictures and use those for comparison. I know its hard and frustrating when we have a number in our head that we really want to see on that scale but the reality is our bodies don't always cooperate. I lost most of my goal weight, looked ill, regrouped and started strength training with some unintentional weight gain but my measurements changed (my scale is on probation at this time) some bigger some smaller so things are happening. Congrats on the hard work.3

I've lost 27 pounds since Jan. 1. While I sometimes wish it was more, I also think that losing slowly is giving me good tools to prepare for maintenance.
I'm in this for the long haul, and I'm not punishing myself on the way. So, yay, we're down 27 pounds!!

Hooray!
It took me a year to lose 30lbs too.
It was slow, but it has stayed off since Christmas 2009.
You are learning habits that will last you a lifetime.
Cheers, h.3 -
I've lost about 25lbs over 3 years. But I went from a tight size 16 to a size 9/10 and at one point a 7/8.
I focused more on getting in shape and lost inches but not so much weight. Now I'm actively trying to lose weight and its frustrating. But measured my inches after 3 weeks and I've lost 3 inches off my midsection, haven't lost any weight.
I know it's frustrating because I want to see the scale change too, but taking other kinds of measurements is a good idea. If I hadn't measured my inches I would be thinking all this is for nothing2 -
Congratulations! 30 lbs is a lot, more than 2 stone! A lot of people never even loose that, even with glitches you are going in the right direction.1

When I llost my 50lbs in 2011, it took about 9 months for me to drop 20lbs. I didn't count calories, I didn't weigh food, I just started working on my habits. After switching to diet coke, cutting out fried foods, not eating on the couch, etc, I SLOW lost weight. Without really thinking about it.
When I got to that point, though, the weight slowed down and I wasn't done yet, so I needed to do something about it. I started logging food, and exercising more and the other 30 dropped off.
30lbs is better than where you were (I started close to there myself at 193). Trust me 173 felt really good compare to that and I'm sure you feel like a different person at 163.
Keep up the good work and don't get frusterated that it's slow. Why the rush?1 -
ilovemyfreckles : I hear you. Everyone is right, but I know the it can seem SO slow when you want the fat gone YESTERDAY!!!!! See, we're not mindful of our bad habits that got the fat on,but we're mindful of our improved habit to get the fat off, then we start watching the mirrors and scales like a clock. Try to refocus on the other improvements you've made thus far and enjoy life!

Be Proud at how far you've come! Losing 30 pounds in 1 year is what my goal of Lose 30 by 30! My birthday is in 8 months from now and i'm determined to lose the last 30 pounds until my goal weight. I think that slow and steady is definitely the right pace.1

So you probably moved out of the obese range into the overweight range and lost over 10% of your body weight, which is shown to improve health. You consistently lost over .5 pounds per week average. You gave yourself enough calories so you weren't over-restricted and took some breaks. You're likely pretty physically fit from 5 days of exercise each week.
Sounds pretty awesome to me!7 -
good job!
you didnt gain it quickly, you wont lose it quickly! and the slower you lose it, the more likely it is to STAY off!2
