This is going to sound really silly but I barely ever get ill and currently I have a very painful throat. People get sore throats all the time but I don't know if mine feels so bad because it's something I've never really had or if it's actually bad. It doesn't feel swollen, I shone a light down my throat to inspect and nothing looks out of the ordinary but I can't talk or eat or swallow. Even when I periodically go to swallow my own saliva which is something you don't really notice usually, it's so painful. I've tried painkillers and various soothers but nothing really helps.

How sore are sore throats usually? Do they normally make eating and drinking painful?

Is your throat still sore? It seems very weird that it hurts to swallow. I'm concerned for you. :grimace:

A normal sore throat should be max 86 units of soreness. 87-95 units of soreness and you're in trouble. 96+ units of soreness well...you don't want that, that's for sure.

Are we talking metric soreness units or imperial?

If your throat has been very sore for a few days go see a doctor.
    Do you have other symptoms?

    Get some throat lozenges.
Get more fluids. Sometimes hot tea with honey is soothing. Sometimes cold things like popsicles are soothing.
If the air is dry you might aid some moisture to the air with a vaporizer or humidifier.

If you can't eat or drink because of the pain, you could become dehydrated and make things much worse. You really need to see a doctor. Better safe than sorry. Hope you get well soon!

A proper strep infection in the throat causes an abundance of runny yellow postules at the back of the throat which are so horribly painful that my mother's home remedy was a relief.

Mom's home remedy: Bourbon. Lemon juice. Menthol crystals. Mix. Drink. Drink more.

Hey there. Not sure if you've found relief yet but hopefully you're feeling better.

Sore throats vary in degree from person to person but anything out of the ordinary where it hurts to eat or even swallow its wise to get checked out.

If its from a vocal trauma like screaming or yelling loudly, then complete rest is really the only real remedy...including no whispering as that's worse than speaking.

Sinus infections can lead to post-nasal drip where the infections take root in the throat. Those may occasionslly require antibiotics to clear up.

If you're infection free I'd suggest making up some "Gollum Juice" and drinking that to soothe the irritation.

Boil some fresh grated ginger root and lemon in water, then let steep 4-5 minutes. Scoop into a mug and sweeten with liquid honey.

Drink that 4-5 times a day and you'll be singing again in no time!

    Good luck!
