Which do you prefer? Carbon or Aluminum frame?

Steeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeellllll. All three of mine are steel. My old road bike was aluminum and I much prefer my steel roadie now. Haven't ever had carbon but that's a possibility when I get a tri bike.

I have one aluminum. I used it for racing, and it was all right. I tried to use it for long distance cycling and didn't like it ... too rough. So it's my trainer bicycle ... on my indoor trainer.

Yes, exactly. When I got my steel road bike I was surprised how smooth the ride was in comparison to my aluminum bike.

Do all steel bikes come with downtube shifters and granola?

Carbon for me as my all aluminium hybrid is an incredibly harsh ride on any road that is less than smooth.
But in truth you can make good or bad bikes out of aluminium, carbon, steel or titanium. All the materials have different strengths and weaknesses.

I like my new steel bike, with all the modern components . I don't have enough experience with other material, but I know that some people are going back to steel for long distance riding. It's a bit heavier but not significantly (and one can always loose a few lbs on this app), it does gives you a softer ride because of the flexibility of the material, especially from the curved fork.

My main long distance bicycle is a surprisingly light steel. :)

Do anyone know the desert dash in Namibia? It is the biggest MTB race in the world. Which is 369km long. Cyclists from all over the world come to participate. You can ride it solo,2 man team or a 4 man team. It consists out of 6 stages. If you are riding in a team. The full team must ride the first and last stage together. The team also only finish when the last man/women finish the last stage.

I have both, I ride both, I like both. Steel, too. Which I like better depends on a number of things.

Someday I'll get on a Ti frame...

Got myself a new racer this year as my old one got killed in a group crash. Unfortunately I haven't been able to do much cycling at all this year due to a lot of changes in my life. I did manage to clock just above 2000km, and I completed the Hamburg Velothon 120km race without being picked up due to time limit.

I've gone into serious winter training in order to get out and do a LOT of kilometers next year. My goal is 5000km again (I hit that in '16, so I know for sure it's doable for me), and to get into a regular rhythm of cycling at least twice a week, regardless of weather.

No ... not familiar with it. But then, I'm not really familiar with the mountain bike scene.

Will you or someone in your family be in it?

My son and husband is riding the two man team this year. They have been training the whole year for it. I am the "backup" driver. Doing all the support. It is the first time for them, so everything is new and very scary.

It's like a road bike with 33 mm tires for mud racing.

Giant TCX2 2012 (cyclocross). Great bike. I replaced the large tires for narrower ones.

Yeah I have had my Cervelo P4 for a while. It never shifted well so I put SRAM etap on it. Expensive but it finally rides like the price it all cost...

Haha! Actually my steel bike (built in 2012) does have downtube shifters, because I was building it up myself and didn't feel like screwing around with more cable housing than necessary.

It's silly fast...I have a Flo 9 full carbon in the back and HED 6 in the front. I do a lot of long solo time trials so my two road bikes are super aero. Just finished the P4 this summer after my goal race so we will see what it can do next year.

I know this is more than just kilometres, but this was my 2017 in Cycling. :)

Goals for 2017 (there are more, but these are the cycling-specific ones) ... and my comments about how they've gone :)

Cycle more than 2016. 2016's total was 5760.76 km. I want to cycle more than that in 2017.
    ...... Check! 6365 km

Complete Petite Year Round Randonneur. This is a challenge where we have to do a 100 km ride each month for a total of 1200 km. There is some flexibility in that we can do 50 km one month and 150 km the next to make up for it, but most of the time it should be a 100 km ride. The challenge started in November (that's when the Audax/Randonneuring year starts), so I've done 3 already.
...... Check! All 12 and we went over the 1200 km minimum

In the past, I've done several CAM challenges (Century A Month, where I ride a 100 mile ride each month of the year), and would like to do that again, but realistically, with full-time work + university, I'm not sure I can commit to that schedule. However, I would like to do as many centuries as possible. Good training rides.
...... Check! All 12! And we actually did an additional 2 for a total of 14.

Complete Super Randonneur. A Super Randonneur is Audax/Randonneuring's standard series and the series which is required to qualify for longer rides in most cases. It consists of one ride each of 200 km, 300 km 400 km, and 600 km, each of which has to be completed within a certain time limit.
...... Completed three 200Ks and one 300K in BRM events + another 200K as a Permanent.

Complete a 1000 km randonnee. This might be a long-shot. However, if the 600 km event goes well, there is a 1000 km 2 weeks later.
...... Unfortunately no. Ended up with the Great Flu of 2017 instead.

    One 1000 km month.
...... Two of them! March: 1002.7 km & April 1111.5 km

    Cycle up Mt Wellington again.
    ...... Yep in February!

    Cycletouring.
...... We did some hub-and-spoke style touring but that was it this year.

Edit: Also ... not part of my goals, I ended up with 58,991 metres (193,540.03 feet) of climbing according to Strava. Unfortunately, I didn't record 2 or 3 rides, so the actual total was slightly higher than that. Not too bad for a lady who seeks out flat rides. :)

    Just over 8,000km.
A new PR for me and and a big jump from my previous best helped by retiring part way through the year.

About the same as you. My bike got stolen last summer, it took a while to replace, then wildfires broke out and it was too smokey to breathe. :disappointed:

@nelja 4700 km (2920mi) and about 133,000' elevation for me. My "sweet spot" is to do 3 big rides a year and this year I only did 1 century and no tours.

I have 2 centuries planned for 2018, and am on the lookout for one more adventure. I miss the years when I rode more, but am pretty happy with what I am doing all things considered.
