Buying local/organic, IMO, is pretty important. My husband was like yours. He didn't understand why I wanted to buy organic meats, until we watched a few videos and read a few studies together about the corn-fed beef industry in the USA. Seriously, this adds to all sorts of problems, ecoli-wise, and nutritionally is not good for the animals.
We came to a compromise. We buy our meat organically/locally, our milk, and the "dirty" fruits and veggies. The rest of the items we get from a regular grocery store. We are a family of 5, and we only spend about $150 on food a week (sometimes less). So I think we do pretty well with our budget.
It's all about compromise. I told my husband that he could eat fast food at work, and if he wanted cookies and other junk, that I didn't mind as long as he did not store them in the house. He understood, because he stands behind my decisions and he knows I want to be healthy!!!0 -
And no, it isn't an antiquated concept. The husband controlling the finances and being the sole breadwinner are antiquated concepts. A married couple combining finances and having an equal say and shared responsibility in their household's financial planning are NOT antiquated concepts.

Thank you all for your input.0

come to a compromise (dont buy locally based eggs and meats?)
^^^^^ this ,..compromise,....surly you can think of something he likes,......and then no worries!0 -
My husband is supportive, but he will still eat what he wants, and we take turns on certain items, like i love soy milk or no more than 2%, i could go either way but he HAS to have whole milk for example and i cant really drink it, too heavy for me, but we switch. One week we will get his milk, and the next we will get mine. We compromise a lot he wants a strawberry cream pie, so if he gets that then I'm allowed to get my 100 calorie iced coffee, and things like that. We compromise.0

Maybe tell your husband to stop acting like turd and be thankful for the smoking hot wife he has.
This Plus turd is one of my favourite wurds. I mean words.0 -

Buy a few leghorn hens, or female geese for nice big eggs. Why dont you see about buying meat chickens from someone that sells meat birds, they can even take them to the butcher and have everything done for you. Hit up the county fair and buy a pig/ cow- go in halvsies with people. ( It IS more expensive, BUT its also a tax write off. ) Try your hand at gardening and grow veggies you eat a lot of. Or get a few fruit trees. I used to have a lemon tree and orange tree, ( we moved) planing on getting a grafted apple tree that produces three or four different kinds of apples. If you are so inclined you can even get a few goats and get milk and make goat cheese ( I dislike goat cheese but if you eat a lot of it hey may as well.)0

hey! i know i'm late to the party but i thought i'd add my two cents worth. when my hubby and i got married, he considered a balanced diet to be taco bell before noon, and then taco bell after noon. he was SO not prepared for me haha!!! we now eat mostly paleo with a few add-ons for him, but our situation calls for tiggghhhht finances. we live below the poverty line so we have to really be able to bounce a quarter off our budget, especially concerning groceries. at first he kinda stiffened up at the thought of buying produce and such, but once i showed him how much variety and delicious food we could get for cheaper than taco bell, he realized it was important to me and has let it go. he even enjoys it now!
i guess my point is, i meet him where he is. he respects that healthy food is what makes me happy, and i try to extend effort his way. we have a lot of paleo meals that are his favorites: cheeseburgers (no bun for me), taco salad, roasted potatoes, guacamole, breakfast for dinner with sausage and bacon, etc. how could he not be down with that? i find that when i go out of my way to show him i am committed to him, he is more ok with me shopping for everything healthy we need. i make him lunches for work, cook breakfast for us, try to be home when he gets home and make food he likes... it's not that i have to cater to him, but just that i'm showing him that i really appreciate him giving me the green light to do my food thang. makes sense?0 -
Yeah, no one ever got healthy not eating locally raised meat and eggs.
fair enough.... With the whole primal thing, I just wanted to stay away from the grain fed and hormone injection in animals....
But, I see what everyone is saying...
Treating an eating philosophy as a religion, especially when it really isn't necessary, and harming your marriage is not a great idea. Just something to think about.0 -
I feel like your husband should support you. If he knows that this is something that is really important to you he should back off. I'm trying to put myself in your shoes and think about how I would feel if my bf and I were in the same situation. I would really make it clear to him that this is something I feel strongly about and that I am not going to give it up to make him happy. If it is your money then you should be able to buy whatever food you want. I think he needs to back off and let you do your thing.0

I solved my issue by compromising, you can loose weight without a gym.. Believe me all my 35lbs has been walking, workout videos and whatever I can find around my house. So the cost I would have used for the gym, goes into my grass fed beef and organic eggs and little extra organic things I like to eat. But on the other hand my husband eats what I cook, He doesn't like it then he doesn't eat. Plain and Simple.0

At first I was going to come on the side of your husband as eating a primarily protein diet is expensive especially when you add the costs of speciality stores.
But then...
101lbs wow what an accomplishment. He's been there the whole time he's seen you struggle. He should no as well as anyone that someone who used to weigh that much cant ever really have a normal life with food. I mean if you had Celiac's and had to buy gluten free bread which costs an arm and a leg to keep from shutting down your intestines would he balk at that.
I guess if I came that far found a way that worked for me and he complained I would be just as frustrated. To give up your gym membership might spell the return of your old ways. I hope you have a plan in place to continue with your activity.
I dont really have any advice. I think I would talk to him and let him no this is how you have to eat because it's what works for you. Tell him that you arent ever going back to your old self and he can either join you or not.
Hope you can resolve the issue.0 -
Interesting subject. I lost my partner due to my weight lose after 4 years in relationship. I am not sure what was worst, my food regime or me losing so much weight ...he likes girls with bum size of triple wardrobe with a mirror...But then again, if it was just about my physical side..I let him go gladly
Creeping your old profiles to see if you had a giant but...no dont see it but you got curves girl0 -
come to a compromise (dont buy locally based eggs and meats?)
This is what I was thinking. You can get some awesome stuff at the same grocery store that has everything else without running up a huge bill.0 -
Buy your own meat and eggs?
Then he shouldn't have a say in what you buy with your hard earned money. You keep doing what you feel is right for you. Also, congrats on your 101lbs lost! Wow!
It isn't "her" hard earned money it is "their" hard earned money.
It depends on if their fiances are combined. If it is "her" own money and if she doesn't tell "him" what to do with his money. Not all marriages have combined finances, it's 2013.
They can treat it any way they want, but by the law of most states it is "their" money.
I'd also say stop blowing money on over-priced meat and eggs when they absolutely will do nothing for your goals, unless your goals include propping up local producers.0
