The Luke thing was obvious, I figured it out right away (because really, there was no way he would actually have made it there.
Didn't see the books but really, I don't see how it's such a huge deal anyway.
Saw the kid. I admit I don't really see the point of that scene but I guess it's building up to the next movie.0 -
Saw the movie. Less than impressed. But, has been typical for last few ones...0
-
The original movies = space battles, space magic, space sacrifices, space empire vs space rebels
The latest movie = space battles, space magic, space sacrifices, space empire vs space rebels
I really don’t get the hate I see. This movie seems on par with the other star wars movies.
People seem to be acting like this is some massive drop in quality or change in direction.

Honestly my main gripe is just that they just keep taking the exact same situations as the first trilogy, with the Jedi leaving training to 'save' someone, that person killing their 'boss' to save the Jedi, the big bad guy showing the Jedi how the rebels are losing... Yawn. Bit of imagination people please?
And Snoke coming out of thin air and disappearing one episode later like an afterthought... who was he anyway?
I don't know, I just didn't feel the same satisfaction after it than I did with the last two.0 -
I loved this movie. Ep 7 was good, but very formulaic.
I loved how unpredictable this movie was.
To quote Luke, "This is not going to go the way you think!"0 -
To the people complaining about the deaths or force ghosts (more appropriate for some)...
Look, each trilogy was supposed to be a separate story. Its nice that the originals appeared in this last trilogy, but this trilogy was never supposed to be about them. We have new heroes.
I really enjoyed this movie, more than Force Awakens, which was great, but lets be honest, it was 'A New Hope' reboot.0 -
and Re: Rey's parentage: very happy about that.
The previous movies were all, "This person is special because of genetics". The royalty angle was 'yawn'.
The little boy at the end was a nobody. That scene embodied the whole movie.
You have to make your own destiny..... I found that really refreshing.
Remember, the Jedi didn't marry or have children, so "I am a Jedi, like my father before me", was the anomaly...0 -

Actually none of them were special. Vader was a slave child, Luke was a farm boy, Rey was an abandoned scavenger. The theme of anyone can go on to become someone special and do great things is pretty strong in Star Wars. They just beat you over the head with it in this one. They also chose to make it so anyone can use the force and not just Jedi and Sith. Which is much more like New Hope, where you see alot more people using the force.0 -

I didn't see the books either. It's not a huge deal it just makes what Yoda said different because we didn't know Rey scavenged the books already.
The point of the kid was to show a new generation of Rebels and force sensitive youth willing to fight against evil. A very Disney moment, and a little cheesy for me (the (Special decoder) ring taking it over the top).0 -

The new trilogy is Supposed to be about the old characters while creating something new. Each movie was supposed to be a send off, however with Carrie Fisher dying they can't do that in the next one.0 -

What the director said was he did that, while also showing new stuff, to get all the old stuff you have all ready seen out of the way for the 3rd movie. No more thrown scenes, no more Emperor. We have never seen what it would of been like for Darth Vader to take control. Now we will with Kylo Ren.
Although it does lean heavy in the whole redemption thing for Kylo Ren and Rey next movie. Which would be just like Return of the Jedi. With no Princess Leia, it's hard to say how they will go. BUT they will leave it open ended for more movies and TV series.0 -

Yoda knew she took the books, I'd guess. The books were in the drawer where the blanket was drawn from. Or, another thought is that he put them there?
As to the "over the top" Disney stuff. One other thing I didn't like about this movie is that it made a lot of political/social statements when Fin and the one gal were on the casino world. Animal cruelty, war profiteering, child slavery, etc. Reminded me of the way they did Wall-E. Yes, I get it there's some very hot topics in the world today. But, I go to the movies to escape reality for a couple of hours. Even with Anakin being a child slave, they didn't make it as in-your-face as they did in Last Jedi. It was very subtle in the previous movies.

I disagree. Its like the Princess Diaries...you thought you were a nobody, but surprise! You're really a princess.
Anakin was a 'virgin's child', conceived by midclorens, Luke was the son of Anakin.
Rey really is a nobody. Her parents traded her for drinking money. That was painful to hear. Not, "surprise, you're Star Wars royalty"!0 -

In Star Wars, you don't know any of that. Luke is a farm boy that defeats the Empire. It's an every body can do this story. That's why everyone relates to it.0 -

Just curious what the people who disliked it thought should have happened to Luke? I was surprised it happened this soon, but it was the only possible outcome. I feel like the detractors aren't thinking this through.1

I figured that Leia would have died in this one, with Carrie Fisher passing away, and Luke would have survived through the vast majority of the next one to die in a way similar to that which he acted in Ep IV - VI.
However, I feel his death was rather anticlimactic while somewhat waster and I feel that Leia's action after the bridge was blown up was rather ehh. Didn't care for it.
Given they saved her, here is my prediction for Episode 9:Star Wars: The Love of a Mother
To me, so far, Episodes 7 and 8 are part of a trilogy I'm rather not liking:Star Wars: The Oedipus Complex0 -

Agreed with you on it, @MeeseeksAndDestroy on trying to walk the fine line. I don't mind that they are setting it up for the future, and having it geared towards new viewers. Friends of mine who are 10 years (or more) younger than me didn't experience the originals as they were being released in the theaters. Nor were they aware of how difficult it was to try and gather information for the original movies as they came out. I read all the original books numerous times, as well as anything that related to info on characters, stories, etc. So, it's their time to experience the excitement.I agree with your comment on Snoke, and Kylo has set himself up now in that role. It's just the first time a Sith Master was killed before the end of trilogy.
While I disagree with Luke's passing in this movie, I did like how he force projected himself to face Kylo. Was very cool, and showed just how strong he was with the force. My whole issue with the scene of his passing was that he was very taxed from the fight (sweating, collapsed to the ground, etc), then he seemingly climbs up on the rock to sit cross-legged with almost no hesitance to then vanish.
In a sense, I get it. But, I think it could have been edited just a little better with more of a struggle to climb up.
Overall, I'll watch it again. I'm not a fan of 3D movies. Most of them give me headaches, and wearing the glasses is not comfortable. I actually prefer to watch movies in regular format.1
