Is that normal? I have to assume that means my wrist got bigger at night for some reason? Fluid retention while laying down?
Weird... I DID notice the same thing this morning. Just started wearing mine, still getting used to it. Figured I slept on my arm or something.0 -

not something I've noticed although my fitbit strap is held with a magnet so could potentially loosen overnight. I've just ordered a new leather 'watch-strap' fitting as I suspect there's nickel in the current strap giving me dermatitis on my arm.
I guess it could be water-retention or similar. This is my first time in twenty plus years of wearing a watch regularly and I don't think I ever used to wear one all night anyway0 -

Just a quick 2.4 miles so I wouldn’t feel like such a lazy bum today. Lol

but I could go down stairs carrying a laundry basket pretty normally, and was able to walk around to go get some groceries. I'll take it.
In other news, today a check for $100 arrived in the mail. No letter accompanied the check, but it was from USATF Niagara Region and had "Runner of the Year" written in the memo field. So I would say it's now official that I am the 2017 USATF Niagara Region Masters Runner of the Year. Yeah, I backed in because Paul from Buffalo didn't run the last race; but I'll take it. In 2018, somebody better than me will be paying enough attention to win this series.
Wait, a man doing laundry and the grocery shopping and you call that normal? Ha ha!
Congrats on being Masters Runner of the Year!!

_nikkiwolf_ wrote: »@hjeppley I'm probably a bit late, after all the socks advice you've already got. But in addition to wearing socks with wool, I also liberally apply (bike) chamois bike to my toes when I know I'll spend a few hours running in the wet, I like to think that helps prevent blisters as well.
Thanks! That sounds like good advice. I'll have to see if our local bike shop has it. If not, Body Glide or something like that would help at least a little I'd imagine. The melting hasn't really started yet, but today it should start in earnest (and then freeze again overnight). I am still debating making some "screw shoes" and bringing those along just in case. Being a screw shoe virgin however, I am not sure a half marathon is the place to try it out. There is also a some ice underneath the current snow that is melting so not sure how that is going to play tomorrow particularly on the somewhat technical terrain.
Good luck to everyone racing tomorrow! @_nikkiwolf_ I am similarly (unreasonably) stressing out about racing later in the day. My half marathon starts at 6 pm and I am pretty stumped about what and when to eat tomorrow. It doesn't help that I am busy from 10:45 am to 2 pm with my son's music lessons. Right now I am thinking about eating right after lessons and then maybe having a little apple sauce or an energy bar right before the race starts.
@Orphia How do you get to pace? I think I'd like to do that sometime! It sounds like fun.
I just did some water walking this morning. Will stretch and foam roll really well tonight and probably do a yoga class the morning of the race.

Good luck to @hjeppley @_nikkiwolf_ and anyone else who is racing this weekend. I've got my first race of the year on Sunday. A flat and fast 10k lake circuit. No snow in the forecast and apparently temperatures will be in the high 30s. I'm good with that.3

On the theme of socks…..I run a lot in wet stuff. It’s the UK, we like rain and mud, snow we don’t really get, but mud? Yep, by the bucketload. The only problem is…..I’m allergic to wool. I mean, maybe it would make me run faster, having a burning itching sensation in my feet that I couldn’t wait to soothe, but I’ll pass. Anyone got any good NON-natural fibre suggestions?0

I wear mine 24/7 and have never experienced this. I'll pay attention tomorrow.0 -

I have never noticed mine being tighter in the morning. Obviously, your wrist is swelling overnight; the open question is why? If it's a normal consequence of some health issue you're already managing, it's no big deal. If it's something new and different, I'd want to know what is causing it.0 -

Well . . . laundry and grocery shopping are normal for a man who lives alone. I don't think I can get my cat to do them.5 -
@RunsOnEspresso I LOVE THAT SHIRT! lol. I remember being in Cave Creek in May one year and everyone was commenting how hot it was. "But it's a dry heat." I think I heard that like 5 times.
@karllundy I hope your butt's ok. Haha. I am still feeling all the affects of mine since October. Take care!
@kgirlhart I still wussed out and decided to indoor bike train instead. I can't handle the cold anymore. 16 is what it was this morning. I'm a wuss! Praying for your dad tomorrow!
@shanaber I am definitely telling the dr about stress. Yes, running and working out has been my stress relief at least to a degree. I definitely feel better after. I hope you feel better soon!
@Orphia - Go Secretary! That is really cool!
@Marissaxzxzxz So sorry to hear about the lightning strike. I would be so thankful it was just the TV's. Stay safe!
@Elise4270 thanks for checking in on me. Well, he is sending me to an internist. I bet they will do a stress test and whatnot. We'll see.
@LaurenFOB2301 Good luck on Saturday! I am sure you will be great. Can't wait to hear how you do on the first one back to it!
Thank you everyone for your kind words. I think getting the kids back healthy, having our cleaning lady finally come back after the holidays today (yes, I have someone clean my house...I give up eating out for lunch just so I can afford her and get back time and sanity in my life.) and getting some organization with some stuff at work has set my mind a little better. I was reading different things last night and found a plan based on the plan by Jeff Galloway, about run/walk/run training. I know that is what Couch25k is kind of at first but this is even for veterans. I think that is the way I need to go instead of pushing myself and worrying more about leg issues and heart rate. I'm pretty excited about it actually. Don't know why it took an article to bring it to the forefront of my memory, but it did.
I actually wrote this all yesterday and I am sure that I have many more updates to post, but I'll do it on another post. Happy Friday.11 -

Today's notes: Today's assignment was 1:15:00 easy pace trail run. The XC trails were in pretty good shape, but the snow was pretty soft, so it made for a little harder running, but not hard. Run felt good. Now off to more training with Ross Greene on working with challenging children.
Oh, I got warning for posting my blog link, so I guess I won't be doing that anymore. I'll just say that a post is up I guess.
Have a Runderful day!

4/13- Zumbro Endurance Race 100 Mile
7/28- Minnesota Voyageur 50 (coach brought up this one)
9/8- Superior Trail 50 mile (Lottery)

@girlinahat - I wear Balega Blister Resist socks. They are made of mohair (still a natural fiber, but hypoallergenic), so should not aggravate a wool allergy.1

I've recently started wearing these after so many people here recommended them. They're fab.1 -

1/19 - Easy 1-mile run to stay loose for tomorrow's 5k race. Felt great.
Today, I meant to run super slow, but when I checked my pace time at the end, it was much faster than I expected. Crazy how perceived effort changes in subtle ways with improvement. I think I've made some progress in the last month by pushing past my limits (despite all this cold!)
Feeling good at the moment about tomorrow. Weather is supposed to be beautiful. I'm not running to race anyone but myself. I'm too slow to actually compete with anyone, hah. Aiming to finish below 33 minutes. We'll see how that goes!8 -
Good luck, @LaurenFOB2301! You'll do great!1

More seriously, that is kind of why I asked. I have not worn a watch to bed for decades so did not know if some swelling at night was normal or not. I kind of suspect it is, and at least a couple people here so far have mentioned some similar experience.0 -
1/1 = 6 miles
1/2 = rest day
1/3 = 7.5 miles
1/4 = vinyasa yoga class
1/5 = 7.5 miles
1/6 = 13 miles - River Road Half Marathon
1/7 = 6 miles
1/8 = strength training at the gym
1/9 = early PT appt for my foot/ankle
1/10 = 8 miles
1/11 = 6 miles
1/12 = 9 miles
1/13 = rest day
1/14 = 14 miles (run/walk intervals with group)
1/15 = 5 miles & foot PT appt.
1/16 = rest day
1/17 = 6 miles dreadmill & 30 minutes strength training
1/18 = 4 miles
1/19 = 14 miles
A nice & slow 14 mile run/walk session with my running BFF/running “*kitten* about life” buddy. Even though we were run/walking in intervals, my ankle is sore. This is so frustrating and getting old sucks. Rest day tomorrow.
January Goal = 140 miles / total miles = 1065 -

On the interwebs I found a site and you can probably find them other places, but Alpacas of Montana have a swift running sock. I LOVE alpaca because they are hypoallergenic and have the same warming quality of wool. I got a pair for Christmas and love them. My mom got them and the ones I got are a little thicker than I would have picked (they have different ones) but I still love them.0 -

LOL - Doctor Google always tells me I have some weird and rare form of cancer. Thankfully, Google has been wrong 10/10 times.2 -

I tried them once and never used them again. It felt like my feet were encased in a furnace. I can’t do wool socks — FYI ... that’s probably why I keep loosing toenails.0 -

You can add another data point to your survey. It doesn't happen to me every single night, but it does when I've had high sodium intake, at certain points in my cycle, and other times when I notice water retention (e.g. carb binge, new workout routine, etc).2 -

Well, I did it today! I went straight to the gym after dropping the kids off, used the rest room and set off. Boy my legs felt heavy the first few miles, but then I started feeling better. There were several sections with ice and crunchy snow so I had to be careful not to fall, I’m just glad it was still frozen and my feet stayed dry.
I finished in just under 2hours and 4minutes. I had plenty of time to shower and pick up the kids from their half day of school.11 -
@seanevan10 there is no shame in having a cleaning lady! I did it when I was working full-time with a baby. It definitely helped relieve some of the pressure.
As long as you aren’t cleaning for the cleaning lady6 -
January 2018 runs:
01 Jan – 5 km parkrun 28:08
02 Jan – 21.2 km half marathon 2:12:33
04 Jan – 6.7 km
06 Jan – 5 km parkrun 29:09 so freaking warm!!
07 Jan – 18 km
10 Jan – 13.1 km
11 Jan – 11 km
13 Jan – 5 km parkrun 28:29 & made a new Strava friend
14 Jan – 16 km pretending to be a F1 racing driver
16 Jan – 10 km
19 Jan – 5 km practicing pacing using Garmin alerts 29:45
Jan goal: 170 km
Jan total: 116 km
I'm being a (30 minute) pacer for parkrun (5km) on Saturday.
It will be my first time as a pacer, so I set up my Garmin to give me alerts if I go slightly over or under 6 min per km, and did a practice run this morning.
Did it today in 29:45. Hopefully will be even closer when I'm running on the exact course where I know the km markers. I've got 2 people wanting to follow me to get under 30 minutes, so the pressure is on!
@Orphia Hooray for pacers! I never would have made it though the marathon I ran in December without the supportive (and talkative) pacer I followed. I hope you help someone achieve their goal!2 -

They also have a model with thicker fabric, if you prefer that, and higher/lower cut ones. But make sure you get some from the Kiprun line, not the "Eliofeel", those are okay too but not as nice.
--
I just combined my run tonight with a visit to the supermarket to complete my race outfit for tomorrow:
triple thickness, made with 30% less C02 and from 25% vegetable fibres. What more can a girl ask for in a new dress?
It seems 130 litre was the right "size", they go down below my knees, but aren't too roomy. 260 l would have been way too large, 100 l might have been a bit too short. I really hope the weather forecast is wrong and I won't need them tonight; especially since if I already get drenched in the first race, even a fancy garbage bag poncho won't make waiting for the second race too much fun. But since I signed up for both races myself, I guess I can't really complain!10
