Thanks y'all. I was super pumped and did another this morning. i was hoping to improve my time by 30-40 seconds but i was actually slower by almost a minute and a half. My total distance was actually 3.3 miles at 38.14(if i remember correctly). The marking for the 5K turnaround was barely visible that i missed it and had to pull out my phone so i could check my apps' distance. im sure if next time i dont carry my pack with me i should be able to get that 30-40 second improvement since i only took like 2 quick sips. i would have also made better time had my dang pants didnt keep feel like they were slipping down...which is actually a good thing cuz that means im finally losing some inches. whoop whoop. lol.
who knows i might sign up for the 10k next weekend instead of the 5k.

It's so nice to get outside and run! I ran Saturday with a group at the local running store and today was a 5k race. It was a little icy in some spots but not too bad otherwise.

Run total 20.3 miles

2-mile easy run today. (That's a phrase I never thought I'd use this soon!) Had hoped to get in another long run before my race Saturday, but it's not looking like that's in the cards. Just too much going on. Which is fine. I'll take a few more easy runs and a rest day and go from there. Race day weather looks like it's going to be in the low 50s(F), cloudy and probably raining. Bought an "emergency poncho" this weekend just in case.

Another beautiful day 60F/15C ran with Skip she needed at least 5 I just wanted a recovery run. Another run of feeling like crap. I honestly wanted to walk home at 1.5 but kept moving. I did stop at one time when she ran off in another direction and waited for her to run another mile. That time was what I needed to regroup and the last 2.5 was tolerable.

The first race of 2018 is in the books. It was a 10k and I was aiming for under an hour. I finished in a very respectable 57:56.
Perfect weather for a race. Sunny and above freezing (37 deg F), and a very scenic lake circuit. I did notice when I looked at the fly-bys on Strava that a couple of people cut a corner which meant they only ran 4.8 miles, but there's not a lot I can do about that.
Upcoming races
2/10/18 - Cupid's Chase 5k, Wakefield, MA
3/10/18 - Shamrock Shuffle 5k, Medway, MA
5/19/18 - Martha's Vineyard Half-Marathon, Oak Bluffs, MA

@BruinsGal_91 - it seems that is a big corner to cut out over a mile.1 -
@bride001 @skippygirlsmom Yep, it's quite a chunk of the race. It's a loop at the far end of the lake and it's very easy to avoid by cutting down a side street. There are monitors on the course to try and stop people from doing this, but they must have missed a couple of people. It didn't affect the top results or age-group winners, so I didn't see the need to say anything. Although I was a bit surprised to see the winner of my age group was most definitely a guy. I think this was a computer glitch and he was very happy to pass his medal to the woman who was second.0

My first post for January....only 80 pages behind. I was able to run on the treadmill January 17th for 3.64 miles.
I can tell that my ankle injury is really a set-back. I am pretty sure that there is arthritis in that ankle now, because it just throbs at night and it is difficult to sleep at times.I have been rubbing Ben-Gay into it. Still need to get it x-rayed and will try to do that this month. I have been wearing hi-top Reboks to work. Not sure if it is helping or hurting my situation. Not able to fully extend my ankle, which is the point, but maybe I need to switch back to regular shoes to get that full extension. No pain (except when trying to sleep) or swelling, though.
A lot of co-workers have been getting sick....for once, I have avoided it. I think that my daily consumption of bell peppers have helped...just loaded with Vitamin C. Or maybe I have just been lucky.
Because I haven't been able to exercise due to weather and work, my weight loss restarted after the treadmill workout...lost another 3 pounds.
Anyhow my goal is to get my ankle x-rayed and run 20 miles this month or at least 10.
You all are so inspirational. So glad to be back!

Ran F^3 Lake HM yesterday in Chicago. Great sunny day with temps in high 30’s to start with winds less than 10mph. Ran well in a congested start running around Solider Field stadium and the along the lake front out and back. Finished 1:47:20 which wasn’t a PR but not all races can likely have that result. Will keep plugging along to keep training for a hilly March madness HM (running MP vs HMP) and then will see if this Pig can really fly in Cincy in early May.9 -
Brief check in before I try to get some sleep: #BrutallyAwesome was the tagline for the Winter Night Half Marathon I did tonight at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis. It certainly lived up to its name! The 3-4 in of snow from earlier was packed down into a sheet of ice in most places on the trail and the trails were treacherous in places (slid down one icy hill). Still managed a decent pace (10:42/mi) and about 30 min slower than a "good" road half marathon for me. Given the conditions I was pretty pleased and I even finished 4th in my age group. I only gained an extra 2 min on the 2nd loop (2 loop course) despite my previous hamstring tweak becoming a bit more than a tweak. Generally felt strong and was passing other people most of the race until maybe the last mile or so. Photo was taken before it got completely dark--we used headlamps the whole way. Now icing my hamstring and finishing off a glass of wine.
It is really late. This is not an ideal time for a race!

Wow! A Half? At night? In Indy? In the winter? Were there a lot of participants? It looked crowded for the event. You certainly had better temps than had it been held the previous weekend, but still pretty chilly esp at night.
Congrats! You are really strong and determined!2 -

Ha ha on the guy. Skip's friend used to hold the girl's 400m record indoor for a meet until we explained to the meet director that he was a guy and not a girl It took them almost a year to move him to the boy's results. I was actually at a race where a guy ran with a girl's bib and she tried to claim the 1st place prize. Unfortunately for them the girl who actually won was well known to the race director and he knew for a fact she came in first. Quick look at the photographers photos and long and behold man coming in with her bib on.
@hjeppley fantastic half!! I missed your post earlier.
@kevaasen super job on your half too!2 -

One race recently I was SHOCKED to see how well I placed. I won my age group and was way up the ranks. My time was pretty good, but not that good. Turns out my wife's number and mine got swapped in the system. We figured it out in time to get it fixed so the correct people got the medals. Stuff happens I guess.3 -

Yes, the temps were really nice (I wore shorts and didn't even wear my gloves for the second loop) but all that snow and ice was compressed making for a very tricky surface. I think I should have made a pair of "screw shoes". About 200 people did the half marathon and about 350 did the quarter marathon. It is a very popular event that sells out earlier and earlier every year. It was my first year doing it. Because it was mostly single track they started us about 40 at a time at 1 min intervals which made for a really crowded first mile or so. I had to do a lot of passing including bypassing the line at the slippery stairs by bounding down the side of the hill instead Things eventually thinned out so that for the 2nd lap (only the half marathoners) it was really dark and there were times I wasn't sure where I was supposed to go. Some people ahead of us missed a turn. I also discovered that my headlamp doesn't last very long on a 50% charge. It was definitely getting dim by the end and with my gimpy-ness from my hamstring issue and the deteriorating surface conditions (basically a sheet of ice in many places) I slowed way down in the last 2 miles or so because I was afraid of wiping out. Probably cost me 3rd place in my age group (she was only 1 min ahead). In the last mile I managed to step through the ice with one foot on a stream crossing. That was enough to wake me up to get me the last bit of the way! Fun race and lots of crazy people of all abilities.4 -

@PastorVincent in the case of the 5K race I was in, they did it on purpose he wasn't even entered in the race, she was and he ran for her. It wasn't a mix up. It's funny because Skip and I will look at our chips and bibs like 5 times before a race to make sure we are not wearing each others. I actually write their names on the kids bibs during XC season because they lay them down put them on chairs and everything else before they put them on. Still they sometimes manage to swap shoe chips. ugh!1 -

Oh yeah, in the case I mentioned, my name WAS on the bib I was wearing but it still got swapped. The story you told sounds more deliberate, but I am sure I am not the only one that unknowingly finished with someone else's bib.2 -
@hjeppley congrats on your night half! I have done a 5k at night, which was cool. They lit the course with tiki torches and all that, but yours sounds so much more of an adventure!2

Reporting for today's effort, I decided to give my hamstring a break after my epic race last night and the family and I went out for a hike this morning but the surface was even icier than last night at the race. After 1 mile, my husband and son gave up, and then I did an extra 2.5 mi power hike on pavement (15 min/mile) to at least get a bit of aerobic exercise. I'll roll and stretch and ice today and see where I am tomorrow. Guessing I am going to need at least another day of not running to nip this in the bud.
In other excitement, I took the 9 year old to get his new 1/2 sized cello today! He was able to play some fancy stuff on it without any tapes! Growing up!8 -

The two coolest things were the owls and the view of the ice-covered reservoir with the dim glow of the sunset and the city lights on the horizon. There is one loop of the course where you are basically surrounded on all sides with water. It was awesome.

Another windy run today. It always surprises me how much of a difference the wind makes. I felt really slow and I was slower than usual, but not that much slower. Luckily the wind was behind me for most of the last couple if miles. I had my biggest dog scare today too. I was about 4.3 miles into my run when this pit bull just came charging at me. Luckily his owner was out in the yard and she came running out after him and got him. She was very apologetic and I know it was very obvious that I was very scared. I actually took the safety off my pepper spray. I would not have wanted to spray it though because it was extremely windy. But that dog came up and was sniffing my leg with his wet nose. Then the other 2 dogs had to come check me out. I'm pretty sure that was the point in my run where my heart rate was highest.
Congrats on great races @hjeppley and @kevaasen !
@amymoreorless I think you made a wise choice switching your spring marathon for a HM. You've got to get that ankle healed.

I had pain on the bottom of my foot upon strike for a while. All I could find on it was that there may not be enough coushioning in the fore foot. The Nike's may help being new and perhaps the Brooks were woren. It just may take time for your foot to heal or adjust.
I hadn't had the same pain since adjusting my stride like the skateboarding push off, focusing a bit more on my landing. And I gave up some minimal shoes... Good luck with the HM! And school starting. May all your students be exceptionally bright!2 -

Today's notes – After wimping out at 3 miles out of a planned 5 yesterday, today I felt just about as good as yesterday. And it was 44º F (7º C) this afternoon, and the playoff game didn't start till 3. Put on road shoes instead of trail shoes, and set out to run whatever clear asphalt I could find for 2 to 3 miles. Felt pretty good, so when I got back to my driveway at 2.8 miles I did an out and back to make 3.
Yes, the quad ached. Stretched and rolled, and it felt fine afterward. Going down stairs is not a problem. It's mentally frustrating to run these little short distances, but it's encouraging that I was actually able to run on consecutive days.
The plan for the rest of the week is rest Monday, got to the training session kickoff for about 4 miles Tuesday, rest Wednesday, run something that seems to fit my physical condition Thursday, rest Friday and make a decision whether I'm running a 5 mile race on Saturday or going to pace 5 or 8 miles for the training program.
The Freezeroo races are low key, and I've already missed enough of them that I can't score for series placement. The major attraction of running the race is that I expect reasonably clear asphalt for the race course, or at least well plowed roads. Depending on the weather between now and Saturday, the pacing route could have some challenging footing.
Top of my current frustration list is that this nagging quad injury makes every little thing that shouldn't even be a thing blow up all out of proportion. Like, poorly plowed sidewalks. Or cold weather.
Oh, well. It won't last forever. It will only feel like it's lasting forever.
