Addictions, OCD, depression, anxiety, illness, eating disorders, abuse, and so on... the more immersed in the running community I’ve become, I swear half of us are Forest Gump running away from inner turmoil.

Today's run was awesome. It was so nice outside. I varied my usual run so it was pretty fun to run some new places. I also ran around more in the cemetery. It's an old cemetery and there are lots of cool headstones. I did stop to visit the grave of one of my dear friends who was killed in February when she was just 7 years old. Tomorrow would be her 50th birthday. She was crushed by a trash dumpster at our apartment building. It was only by the grace of God (literally since we had a special event at church that evening) that I wasn't there. It is still pretty traumatic to lose someone that way. I still think of her often.
I ran a shorter long run than I have been lately. Since I have officially started my HM training I have built in some cutback weeks. I almost went ahead and ran more since it was so nice, but I decided to stick to the training plan. Now I am going to go back and try to get caught up on this thread. Lol

@RunTimer - I tore a hole in a pair of Nathan gloves that I'd bought on clearance at the end of a winter 2 or 3 years ago, don't know the model name. There were no Nathan gloves in the store, and all the Nathan gloves on Amazon seemed pricey. Size selection and models were thin on eBay, but I ended up ordering a pair of Nathan Transwarmer men's Medium from eBay. We'll see how they work when they get here. Normally I wear a size large, but the gloves I just ruined were a medium that I could get my hands into in the store; and they stretched out to be nice and comfortable for a long time.Sam's warehouse near my job closed....so sad. I don't understand it...it was always busy and it was where I purchase my fresh vegetables and fruit in bulk. Also gas was about 30 cents cheaper per gallon. It was also good exercise to walk the warehouse. Oh well. I'll probably shop at Fresh Thyme.
From what I read, the stores they closed were in locations where there were other warehouses close by. Sucks though. :-(
They closed locations that weren't profitable, including the one near me. They reassigned me to a "home club" an hour's drive away, with the most convenient route being a toll road. When not running, I've been contemplating how to claim the cash back I earned on the Sam's MasterCard in 2017 when there is no local club to schelp it into, and how life with no warehouse club membership is going to function.3 -

One of my Motivators/Hero's who has overcome some major challenges is Canadian Olympic champion Speed Skater Denny Morrison: he suffered a fractured femur in a motorcycle accident in May 2015 leaving him with a steel rod permanently implanted in his leg ( usually ends the career of Skaters ) and unable to recall where he was or how he had gotten there. Where is he now - Heading to Korea for the Olympics at the age of 38. Which for an athlete in his field is rare.

Today's notes – Nice weather again today, but I didn't get out to run till mid-afternoon. Had a loose plan to run 3 to 5 miles, depending on what the quad tolerated; I ended up with 4.24, including 3 familiar small hills. I could have gone on to run 5 miles, but I thought I'd rather be conservative.
Four weeks into January, and I've run just about enough miles in the month to make a decent week's worth of running. Tomorrow is a rest day, and Tuesday will be my last running day of the month. I may or may not break 50 miles for January. On my other goals, I'd say I have achieved a return to regular running, but I'm not to real base building yet. I'm still in rehab mode. I'm not dissatisfied with this; the process will take however long it takes, and I'd rather get better slowly than return to the couch quickly.
Today I felt some effects of the road rash from yesterday's fall, and I realized that all of the minor secondary aches near the quad have gone away. It was just down to the vastus lateralis being sore and telling me to limit distance. I suppose that's a sign of progress.

@sarahthes - my husband wanted to know, does your son have a brother or was the black magic marker self-inflicted as well? Brilliant picture, glad to hear your carpet and sanity survived the experience.
My stupid heel is still badly blistered but I'm much happier since I have a hydrocolloidal bandage on it. So of course I put my knee out, trying to get a good look at the back of my heel! But I put my brace on and ran anyway and it seems no worse for wear.
Easy 5k, and the good news is that our easy 5k, including hills, stops for traffic, and dodging small children with new bicycles, is now only 32 minutes, only about thirty seconds off from our PR. And instead of feeling wiped afterwards we fartleked around the boardwalk - which is a fancy way of saying one of us would just sprint off at random and we would race each other until either my husband pulled ahead and and won or he ran out of sprint stamina and I caught back up and I won. He can totally run me into the ground as far as speed, but I have a lot more staying power.
It was just absolutely gorgeous weather today, tons of people on the trails. We met ALL THE DOGGIES there were so many doggies at the park!

Beautiful day at the park today - did an easy 5k and the nice bit was our "easy" 5k is only 30 seconds slower than our last week's race pace PR. 32 minutes. Very warm and humid this morning here in SE Australia.
Felt like crap, but dragged myself along for 8 km... then felt fantastic all day.6 -
So, I got curious about HM training today and stumbled across a 12-week schedule that starts with 2-mile easy runs and a 4-mile long run in Week 1 and would line up perfectly with a 5K and a 10K that I already had on my race list for this year. So now I'm wondering... Can I really do it? Could I really get myself HM ready so soon? Am I nuts? Ok, don't answer that last one, but... I do need a reality check. I just started running 5Ks nonstop last week. Can I really do this?

It took me nearly 7 months to go from 5 km to a HM, and I was increasing pretty much per the 10% rule. (Though a true geek might be able to the maths better than me.)
I did it without injury.
I love your enthusiasm , but I recommend not setting all your hopes on completing the first HM plan you found today.
I'd recommend reading more about HM plans, and increasing mileage by just running a bit more each week, staying healthy, and achieving lots of milestones as you go, until you do a HM in as long as it takes. xo

We drive 30 minutes just to run our regular run - back about ten years ago this used to be a walkable neighborhood but then we got shot at twice. Well technically only one time did someone shoot AT us but there were guns fired in our vicinity on two occasions, so we stopped walking here. And it's gone downhill since. A thirty minute drive to a better neighborhood is a small thing.6 -
I made goal!!! I am going to think about my goal for February. I want to make sure it is realistic, since I will be travelling, but still challenging.9 -

Reached the goal with 1 more run to go in January, but I won't adjust the goal. Next run is tomorrow, W2D3 of the 5to10K and it will have me running for 45 minutes. It's been a while since I ran that long, so I'm feeling a bit anxious, but on the other hand looking forward to it as it will probably be my first 5K since restarting.
@rheddmobile , that's very scary, I can't imagine the stress every time you go out on foot...

@mobycarp - sorry about the fall and gloves. Stupid sidewalks. I once tripped over those little blue lights that are in the road that are only about 1/2” tall.

@JessicaMcB- I can’t even imagine walking to my car in the driveway in that weather, let alone run. But you probably couldn’t imagine running in 99% humidity and 85 degrees at 4:30 in the morning, lol.

It doesn’t look like I will meet my January goal - but I’m feeling good about my running and other workouts and I’ve been better about rest days… so not going to beat myself up over it. I'm not going to run much this week to taper for HM. Was going to do 3 this morning but it is pouring rain this morning. Probably do arms at gym this afternoon.
This weekend I did great on cycling. I was shocked because we haven’t gotten to bike much due to rain/cold. Yesterday I kept up with the cycling group going up two hills (Florida hills are just bridges over water or highways). Usually I fall a little bit back and then on the way down the hill, race like mad to catch up. I just finished the book I mentioned “How Bad Do You Want It?” and I was using a technique in there - “yeah, this is going to hurt like hell ...” and it worked! So I plan on using that mind game in Sunday’s HM.

Almost at goal. Totally wish i had set my goal in kilometers instead of miles. lol. But ima get it done cuz i refuse to fail the 1st month.

Today's notes: Can't remember if I checked in yesterday. Yesterday was a 1:30:00 trail run. I got in 7.3 miles. It felt harder than it was, as is normal for my Sunday runs, following in the path of Friday speedwork and Saturday long run. Rest day today, and I need it. Feeling pretty tired today.
Made my nominal mileage goal for the month but, with 2 lower mileage weeks this month, I don't think I'll hit the mileage I got last month. Oh well.
