OK so I have been researching a lot because I have dealt with lots of constipation since I was a baby apparently and I have always had a big tummy even when I was skinny so I was always trying to eat lots of fiber and drinking water especially while losing weight and I noticed that my tummy was not going down even though I was losing weight .
So I started doing enemas and eating more probiotic and gut healthy foods and omg I felt so much lighter and energized and my tummy gets smaller so this makes me think digestive health is VERY important to our overall health and some people need more help than changing their diet and taking laxatives since they spent years eating foods the body couldn't digest properly. They need a colon cleansing
I'm STILL on my health journey so I don't know all the answers but colon health is very important so if you aren't going at least once a day you need to make changes it can save your overall health . I love you all very much add me as a friend ifrom you want 2 ❤

While I agree that colon health is important, once a day is not normal for everyone. Additionally, regular use of enemas and laxatives can cause dependence on them. Are you getting enough dietary fat? That can also have significant influence on bowels.18
-
I believe regular use of enemas and laxatives will ruin your colon health, not improve it. If you are experiencing constipation often enough that you need to use these products (anything more than rarely, at least) you should really see a doctor.23

Yeaaaah.
Also, why at any point would you think that going any less than once a day is normal?

You are going to untrain your own bowel muscles to go.
Hydration and high fibre diet of both soluble and insoluble fibre is the key. As well as enough fat in your diet.
If you are not going see a Doctor.
Nobody should take more than 3 days laxatives or colon cleanses as you want to call it without seeing a doctor.

I think if you're constipated regularly you need to find the cause first of all before treating it. I have uterine fibroids which can cause constipation and no matter how much fibre I eat (I have more than the allowance most days) and water I drink or fat I intake I can get constipation. I know from experience it passes in a day or two, so unless it's causing me major distress I don't take anything for it. I usually go to the toilet once a day but then I can have one random day I don't go at all.4

Some people do not go every day - this is quite normal and they absolutely do not need a colon cleanse.
Yes some people are more prone to constipation but *kitten* of laxatives and enemas is not the answer.7 -
Kitten of laxatives ?????
I'm sure I wrote ' abuse of laxatives'13 -

Hi there! I work in digestive health and can tell you there is some good information as well as questionable information in this post. She doesn't seem to be advocating laxatives (TG), which are very deterimental to digestive health. They weaken peristalic contractions that help move ingested food through the digestive tract and can contain cancer causing chemicals. I do advocate enemas for those that experience life long constipation, just in moderation. A good therapy for most people is open system colon hydrotherapy that helps clear the layers of mucosal plaque that lines the large intestine. This therapy also retrains and strengthens the peristalic muscles to help with future bowel function. Also a great therapy for people with candida or other intestinal invaders.33

What does "work in digestive health" mean? Are you a gastroenterologist? What degree do you have?22

It's a water bath enema ... isn't it?0 -

The colon does not need "cleansing" and it's wrong to suggest people need to go once a day. Everyone is different and if someone doesn't go one a day they certainly do not all need enemas.20 -

I was going to suggest this too. I just found out I have a uterine fibroid and even with lots of fiber some days its hard to go.my tummy has also become bloated and looks bigger even though Im losing fat everywhere else7 -

OP, I'm a nurse (an actual Registered Nurse with a degree, and a license and everything!) I'm not sure what you mean by "have a large tummy" but if you mean that you have a megacolon, please see a gastroenterologist, or, if that's not possible, your primary care provider (not someone who "works in digestive health" whatever that means.) This isn't my area of specialization, but I do know that some new medications, made for people with chronic constipation, have been developed recently and have proven to be quite effective in many cases.
Chronic constipation is dangerous but (as others have pointed out in this thread) but the frequent use of laxatives and enemas will exacerbate the problem in the long run.25 -
Gut health is important, but not everyone goes once a day. People need to find their "normal." If things start deviating from that "normal" then there is room for concern.
Generally a diet high in fiber and water is all someone should need to maintain a healthy gut (for people without medical conditions). If you have problems and don't want to go the laxative route, try prunes and/or prune juice. It worked to get things going for me after things "stalled" after having surgery (anesthesia and pain meds slow things down to a crawl).10 -

Heh, that was the only thing that made sense to me in trying to interpret what you said, but "abuse" is not profanity so I was trying to figure out what naughty word you might have said instead and couldn't think of anything that worked.
How odd.2 -

I'm not promoting laxatives at all I just think that colon cleansing is important and no I don't think people should do ithe everyday or even do it themselves. I do believe that col on hydrotherapy is VERY beneficial but people always act scary when any type of colon cleansing is mentioned which is sad cause it really can benefit them A LOT instead of having a doctor put them on harmful laxatives all the time .28 -

Some can go 3 days or more without anyone being concerned.
Laxative and enema abuse will seriously damage your ability to go naturally.
No one NEEDS an enema to cleanse the colon and telling people they need that and laxatives is dangerous advice.
No that is not healthy at all you have been lied 2. Think of your colon as a factory when you eat more food comes in therefore more food should come out the only exception would be people on very low calorie diets. And even then they should go every 2 days34 -

Digestive health is key to absorbing your vitamins and minerals if you are not going regularly your digestive health is suffering. It's very serious it leads to lots of disease being constipated I don't know why you people are bothered by colon cleansing24 -

Because doctors who actually look inside people's colons say it is unnecessary and can in fact be harmful. And I have never met a doctor or nurse who pushed laxatives, I've actually known several people whose doctor scolded them for using laxatives. Digestive health is of course important. Colon cleanses don't help.22 -

No, I have never gone daily (or even every other day) in my entire life and that's absolutely normal for me. My colon is in great shape and working fine per my gastroenterologist.12 -

We are bothered by colon cleansing because it is completely unnecessary. Please provide peer reviewed sources for any of your nonsense.18 -

what is healthy for one may not be for another. everyone is different. as a kid I was lucky if I went twice a week. I wasnt constipated and got plenty of fiber, water and exercise. now its more often because I upped my fiber due to a health issue. not to mention that food takes time to digest and nutrients are pulled from the food you eat. so I dont think making it come out faster is a good thing.7 -
Totally agree about the importance of gut health. I used to have IBS pretty bad when i was younger, and then constipation later in my 30's.
I fixed it by simply eating better.
As a cyclist, it is so much nicer to be able to bring my knees to my chest without discomfort. I can take a much more aggressive position on the bike now. I see so many people with big ol' guts, even skinny people; too much junk in the trunk. I can suck my gut in like i could when i was a kid.5
