The only "kick-start" you'll get from eating less carbs is a seemingly large initial weight drop from water loss.... Fat loss is no faster if you are sticking to the same deficit. If you don't intend to low carb long term, you'll regain the water weight when you start to incorporate carbs again. Why not just start in the same way you want to continue?5 -
I am on keto and loving it so far dropped 8 lbs in the first week, i know its all water weight but i am also going after the other health benefits.3

Do know that "low carb" is consuming <150g per day. Remember consistency is key. Consistently log everything you consume and maintain a calorie deficit and you will lose. Choose a "diet" that will fit your lifestyle and you can maintain long term.0

I am lower carb. I find it works--for me--because I think about what I put in my mouth as opposed to eating, say, the donuts on the office break table0

kick it off with a bang, try <20g net carbs (total - fiber) per day for the first 2 weeks. No grains, no sugar. This breaks your addiction to sugar and carbs and makes it easier to stick with lower carb diet without so many cravings. I also recommend no artificial sweeteners during this time, just to help curb the sugar cravings.
After 2 weeks, slowly up carb intake by about 5 to 10 grams, hold for a couple weeks, if you are still losing weight, can add a few more carbs, see how that works. A good goal for weight loss is 50 g max carbs per day, but it really depends on your body and your protein intake. Once you hit a plateau in weight loss, that is going to be your "maintenance" range that you will want to stick to for long-term weight management. To keep losing weight, drop back by about 10 g carbs per day.
dietdoctor.com is a very helpful website for getting started.

absolutely agree with this! If you are 100 pounds over (and I was too when I started), then you need to make a commitment to healthy eating for the rest of your life. I've done crash diets before that were unsustainable, and gained it all back plus more.
Personally, I see low carb as my new permanent way of eating. I am diabetic and this is the only way to manage healthy blood sugar level with minimal medication.

I've been doing low carb/keto since 1999. Went from 220 down to 175 and have stayed around that weight since. It's not for everyone, and as some have pointed out here, going off can easily reverse any gains. For me personally, low carb is easier to manage. When I started, I made the commitment to basically make it my lifestyle as opposed to just a weight loss tactic and it's seemed to work for the long term.1
