I am thinking about getting a bike and riding for 30 minutes to an hour a day as well as insanity. Is that too much?
It seems that you have a very active level for all of your daily activities.
You need enough calories to support your body's fuel and nourishment needs.
.Are you accurately tracking your food intake? Are you fit enough for adding excercise?
If you add excercise to the mix you should eat most if not all your excercise calories.
And I would suggest a well rounded diet that includes carbs because of all the things you do throughout your day. Jmo.
Yep well rounded and tracking.1 -
If you are not over-tired, and you're maintaining an overall good life balance (enough time for family, faith if applicable, social life, intellectual stimulation, creativity, etc.), then there's no reason not to spend leftover time doing something active, as long as you fuel your activity adequately.
People get in trouble when job-related activity creates repetitive stress and overuse injuries. Sometimes, other forms of leisure activity (that balance out use of muscles/joints) can be a help. Your particular work, coupled with your current body weight, could create some lower body joint stress. Bicycling could be lower impact, and strengthening, thus a good complement. You probably have better insight into whether it's a similar stressor (may be bad) or complementary (more likely to be helpful/good).
Human bodies are designed (by evolution) to move . . . way more than is common in modern life. However, they are not designed to do the same small(ish) repetitive motions constantly (the industrial society model). Give thought to being well-rounded in your physical activities, stay active within good life balance, and you'll be fine.
Our preindustrial ancestors would laugh - rightly - at the idea that an exercise video (even an intense one) plus 30-60 minutes of leisure biking, is "too much" in one day. Do you think that even today, professional athletes, and national team (Olympic) athletes do more, and stay healthy? I do.
If you're not used to it, work up gradually: That's a useful luxury that us moderns have. Otherwise you'll be fine, as long as you don't lose weight unhealthfully fast alongside.

OP, I live in Chicago.
On my off days I sometimes drop husband off at work down town Chicago ( Sears Tower ) and walk home. I love walking. I don't walk for speed. I walk for enjoyment.
