Addicted to Diet Pepsi

When I set my mind to it, I don't have trouble eating healthier food portions and vegetables. I have trouble NOT drinking artificial sweeteners like in Diet Pepsi. I could drink a 2 Liter of Diet Pepsi, every day! What is a cold drink that would give me the same satisfaction? I tried LaCroix (sparkling water), is that good for you? What else is there? If I made a sweet iced raspberry tea with a little raw sugar, is that okay?

I don't believe that sugar substitutes are that bad. I know some people are sensitive to them. If you're one of those people then you shouldn't use them. If not, anything within moderation is fine in my opinion. 2 litres a day might be a bit much but only you can decide that. You may actually be addicted more to the caffine than the Diet Pepsi. Personally I use water enhancers like Kool-Aid but it has Sucralose in it. I have no problem with Sucralose and it helps me get my water in. If the raw sugar fits in your calories for the day it's fine just be sure you count it. The idea here assuming you want to lose weight is to reduce calories. Eating healthier is a good thing but cutting out everything you like can make it hard to keep your calories low. Start slow and work your way up. As time goes by you will find healthier choices for things you want to cut out.13

what is the problem you are having though with artificial sweeteners? they are not causing you to gain weight (or preventing you from losing) if that is what you are thinking? and what do you expect to gain from switching from one substance to another?9 -
What's the problem with drinking diet Pepsi?
As long as you're accounting for the calories in the sugar, you'd be fine (from a weight loss POV) replacing your diet soda with sweet tea . . . but what's the motivation for doing this? For me personally, I'd rather have the diet soda and save my calories for food.10 -
I drink nearly two liters of Diet Coke a day. I know it isn't the best thing for me. I have recently cut calories and find that a Diet Coke gets me through. Allow yourself some simple pleasures and gradually reduce a bit.9

There is nothing wrong with enjoying Diet beverages. It will not get in the way of your fat loss so don't let it bother you.8

This. The only thing that makes me like water over diet soda is that it's cheaper. Like me!7 -
Too much aspertame gives me headaches. Other than that, I drink Diet Dr. Pepper, Monster Ultra Zero, Clear Americans without any *kittens* given.3

It's the caffeine in diet pepsi you are addicted to not the artificial sweetener6

I drink a diet coke a day and love it. Some family members have a problem with the artificial sweetener but I have done my research and see no reason to worry. There is also a great post on here on the same issue...if I can find it I will share...keep enjoying the diet Pepsi.3

@mikhnpaitsmum this the one? https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/1308408/why-aspartame-isnt-scary/p13 -
@tinkerbellang83
Yes! Thank you!0 -
Remember though that Diet Pepsi doesn't use aspartame in all formulations, the formula switched in late 2015 to use a blend of sucralose with acesulfame potassium, "Ace-K", in many markets (though they have re-introduced a re-labeled "Diet Pepsi Classic Sweetener Blend", which still has aspartame...)
Just adding for consideration -- NOT all "Diet Pepsi" will have aspartame, so those portions of this discussion may or may not be relevant to the OP ( @totallyjoker ) depending on what formulation of "Diet Pepsi" she's consuming. The updated sweetener blend in Diet Pepsi may be a suitable alternative for those people with aspartame sensitivities.
Either way, the US NIH doesn't seem to take exception with either aspartame or sucralose -- https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/diet/artificial-sweeteners-fact-sheet .
@totallyjoker , have you ever considered that your 'addition' may be more to the cola syrup? I've been exploring this angle with my own addiction, and in my n=1 case, the relationship seems to be more closely paired with the cola component (inclusive of its caffeine) than anything else that I can isolate.7 -
Unclear as to what the problem is. Is there a reason you want to avoid drinking diet soda?
I mean if you want to avoid it just because then it is like anything else, have to wean yourself off of it by intentionally taking in less day to day week to week until you are off of it.6 -
Diet soda is fine. La Croix or raspberry iced tea with a touch of sugar are fine. Any beverage that fits into your calorie and nutrition goals and doesn't cause any negative after affects for you would be fine. Pick whatever you like!6

There's nothing wrong with some Diet Pepsi. If you are actually drinking a 2 Liter a day, I would say that's an expensive habit and a lot of carbonation for your stomach, so if you want to cut back just do so gradually to avoid a caffeine headache. But if you're drinking a can with lunch every day, I don't think it's anything to worry about.
If you really want to ditch the artificial sweeteners, and you have the calories to include flavored beverages with sugar in them that's fine too.2 -
I dunno, I just feel a lot better not drinking that stuff....
that being said, do what's right for you. *shrug5 -
I feel better with Diet Pepsi in my life. No problem trying out alternates. I keep away from all sugar sodas out of habit. I rather eat my calories.7

If for whatever reason you don't want to consume aspartame, sucralose or splenda, you could always try Zevia - it is made with stevia. Maybe if you have an issue with one of the other sweeteners, you may be able to use stevia. If you don't have an issue with any of them, I would probably suggest that you just continue with what you like.0

Although most on here would disagree with me, I agree with you, 2 liters of chemicals a day can’t be a healthy lifestyle choice. It might not hurt from a CICO perspective, but there certainly are health risks. One thing that helped me quit sodas was the little flavor packets for bottled water. There is so much variety, every flavor, and they use every kind of sweetener. I like the stevia lemonade ones. I also like the la Croix, cherry lime is my favorite. God bless!34

No matter what you're eating and drinking, we're all getting at least two liters of chemicals per day.23 -

Which flavor packets?
The ones that have the same "chemicals" as the soda.24 -

Just the dihydrogen monoxide alone probably
And I'll add I don't think OP is actually drinking 2 liters a day, just that she loves it so much that she could. But if she was, I suspect 2 liters of plain carbonated water per day would be the thing to worry about, all that gas!9 -

I'd be worried about the oxidane present in the Diet Pepsi. Oxidane is a component of rocket exhaust and is used in industry to cut metals. That doesn't sound like something you would want to drink!

um, you realize most people are drinking 2 litres of chemicals per day right? or are you against that pesky H2O as well??8 -

What do you think is in the flavor packets?8 -
...but there certainly are health risks.
Such as?
Honestly the only reason people think diet soda is a health risk is because there are a lot of people on the internet making vague assertions in forum posts and blog articles and since people see lots of assertions they just assume there is some sort of truth to it. Posts like this just add to that misinformation and I'm getting tired of it. There is no evidence that diet soda presents any sort of health risk. If you are going to claim that it does cause health problems you should back that claim up with at least something.
Diet soda is a big fat nothing, it doesn't help your health, it doesn't hurt your health...yet people obsess over it. It is irrational.21 -
