I'm a little late to the dance...mind if I join in? I"m an "over the hill" athlete of 60 years old.

First race of the season for me is a 70.3 distance triathlon on June 3rd. The bike course is hilly, with 3775 ft of climbing over 54.5 miles. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/7663146

May training mileage to date has been:

    Week 1, May 1-6: 94.5 miles
    Week 2, May 7-13: 55 miles (through 5/10)

Expect to do roughly 400 miles this month before the early season race. (Saddle time and mileage will be determined by my coach.) Will start to build more volume in June/July in preparation for a full Ironman race in August, my first.

I haven't been riding very much recently and would love to get back into it. Currently I've been riding around 6 miles in 40 minutes and would really like to get it down to 30 minutes or less by June. My ultimate goal would to be able to ride 15 miles without stopping by the end of this year. I'm not sure how realistic my goals are and I'd love some insight from more experience riders.

I think you could progress far quicker than that but would advise working on increasing your duration before trying to work specifically on speed - that will come.
If you are willing to ride 3 or 4 times a week (a mix of longer, easy and hill rides ideally) you could target 50 mile rides rather than 15 and sooner than the end of the year.

One of the most frequent mistakes people make is grinding along in a high gear at a low cadence and wearing out their leg endurance rather than spinning easily in the appropriate gears and using their cardio systems. If you are comfortable on the bike and not flogging yourself at high intensity you will find the distance comes easily.

British Heart Foundation has good cycling resources......

19.3 miles in 46:xx. So a 25.0 average. Many small rollers and a few reall hills...750 feet of climbing. 9th place.

I am unsure how people can ride at 27+ but they do...

262 watts at 131 pounds, left my aero position only 2 times for less than 30 seconds total.

Now off for a late afternoon recovery ride

My goals all fell apart in late March for reasons out of my control. I don't know how May is going to go, but I'm hoping to start to pick up my fitness pieces.

For a start, I've signed up for a 5K run at the end of the month. A little goal.

    Tuesday, 1 May 2018 ... 3 km walking + 6 flights of stairs
    Wednesday, 2 May 2018 ... 5 km walking + 6 flights of stairs
    Thursday, 3 May 2018 ... 1.8 km walking + 6 flights of stairs
    Friday, 4 May 2018 ... 1.8 km walking + 12 flights of stairs
    Saturday, 5 May 2018 .. 5.92 walking and running
    Sunday, 6 May 2018 ... 3.26 walking and running
    Monday, 7 May 2018 ... 6.6 walking + 6 flights of stairs

    Tuesday, 8 May 2018 ... 1.80 km walking + 6 flights of stairs
    Wednesday, 9 May 2018 ... 5 km walking + 6 flights of stairs
    Thursday, 10 May 2018 ... 1.80 km walking + 6 flights of stairs
    Friday, 11 May 2018 ... 1.20 km walking + 2 flights of stairs
    Saturday, 12 May 2018 ... 1.80 km walking + 2 flights of stairs
Sunday, 13 May 2018 ... 4.38 km walking and running + 2 flights of stairs

    2017 Monthly May
    Walking Distance (km): 43.4
    Walking Time (min): 542.0
    Cycling Distance (km): 0.0
    Cycling Time (min): 0.0
    Stairs Climbed Number: 60.0
    Stairs Climbed Time (min): 48.0

    Totals

    Total Distance (miles): 26.9
    Total Time (min): 590.0
    Total Time (hr): 9:50:00

But despite the fact that I've got 0 km of cycling so far this month, I have purchased the stuff I need to set up Zwift. I'll do that as soon as I get a chance.

After a week of constantly changing and pessimistic weather forecasts someone was smiling on me today for my charity ride from London to Brighton & back - stayed dry, although I carried my rain jacket the whole way.
Beautiful route on some lovely country roads. Ditchling Beacon is a beast to climb though.
Almost a mile with average of 9% and max of 16% but for some reason feels much harder.

95 miles for the event but that was just too close to a Century so checked in and then did the extra 5 miles.

Looks like due to the generosity of friends and acquaintances £900 has been raised for the cancer hospital treating my F-I-L so delighted with that.

This is the approach to Ditchling and the "green wall" that is the South Downs....

Nice ride! Your photo looks a lot like Wisconsin where I live. Rolling hills and very green.

@sijomial - Cool picture, sounds like a great event.
BTW, that climb sounds tough! I did some climbing yesterday, including a couple sections that were on a 7% grade twice during the ride. With that memory fresh in mind, I don't think I want any part of your 9-16% grade, unless I drop more weight. :)

    May training mileage to date:

    Week 1, May 1-6: 94.5 miles
    Week 2, May 7-13: 110.4 miles (through 5/13)

What I would say as a rider who started of not so long ago is preparation is the key.
A good pair of cycling shorts ( the rest of gear is optional really at the start ) because what stopped me more than once was the pain in my "lady bits" from the saddle. To me, it is essential.
Always have water with you and drink it. My trainer always says to me that if I'm thirsty it's too late because my body is already dehydrated.
I second sijomial on the spinning the legs. It's better to get fit first and then powerful. Pushing a massive gear at the beginning can only lead to injury.
And last is persistance. You have to keep at it. It's so easy to be a serial starter. I've been there.
    Hope that helps :)

I second the good pair of shorts, I remember in 2003 I thought, no way I am NOT paying 80-100 dollars for bike shorts...these 30 dollar ones will be just fine, it’s all marketing....

    Oh how naive I was....

I'm coming to the conclusion I might need to drop a few pounds to improve my power to weight ratio to help my climbing, power improvements through training are glacial now.
Really noticeable on long rides like this how lighter riders doing roughly the same average speed pass me on the climbs and I catch them back up on the flat and the descents. Heavy rider + fast wheels + gravity = wheeeeeeee!
Or maybe I should just retire to a less bumpy part of the world?

Hill profile with Ditching at 37 miles....

Mile 37 looks like a wall. Probably feels that way, too.

Yes, I've had similar thoughts around getting to a lower racing weight to help with climbing on the bike and the run. As I've gotten leaner, my speed has improved, but the old guys who mount the podium in my age group tend to be very light and lean.

Of course, moving to a different location is always an option....or only racing downhill courses. :)

Back on the bike after a bit of a break due to travel. This season I want to concentrate on hills. They are plentiful where I live and where I want to live in future. I reckon if I get good at them then I can do bike tours in dramatic scenery one day. It’s a big of a dream.
