Does anyone take any supplements for building muscle that actually work.

Lots of Iron.
In the form of dumbbells and barbell plates.
The only other supplements which have proven not to be a complete waste of money are protein (if you’re not already getting enough in the rest of your diet) and creatine. But in terms of results, it’s far more important that your training, diet, sleep and recovery are on point.8 -

Protein shakes will help you meet protein needs if you fall short getting your protein in from food alone. I prefer to eat my protein, but sometimes I use protein shakes, so they are not useless, they have their place if you need them.0 -
Protein bars can be good. Especially ones like the Nature Valley Dark Chocolate and Peanut Butter. It only has 8 grams of protein, but it is one of my favorite candy bars. They probably wouldn't sell as many if they called it a carb bar...1

To add onto @AnvilHead post, there are a few supplements that can improve recovery, which can indirectly increase recovery, specifically L-Citrulline / Citrulline Malate. Below is a pretty good summary.

What is most important, is if you want to build muscle, you will want a well structured lifting program at your appropriate lifting level.

Nutritionally, don't have an aggressive deficit, ensure you are getting adequate protein and a wide range of foods to ensure adequate micronutrient uptake.1 -
The tiny bag of Haribo gummies. When I'm feeling ready to quit, but my workout isn't done. I eat the bag (it's about 8 mini gummies), it's just enough of a sugar boost to push me through my workout.
Other than that I just make sure my protien intake is good and that I stay hydrated.1
