@Stoshew71 So sorry to about the divorce. Seems I think about dropping the hammer at least once a week, but then I think of all the *kitten* that comes with that, and I remind myself it isn't worth it. So I continue to just go with the flow.1

Unfortunate we think that way.

Everyone knows us Brits drink warm
Beer so we don’t need any of those things
@girlinahat ahh, warm beer. There's nothing quite like it. Hubs and I were in a brew pub in New York last summer and he ordered a 'British-style' beer. Our server said, "Sir, have you ever had cask beer before?" Like me, my husband is from Yorkshire. "Erm, once or twice", was the reply. I wish I could remember what the beer was, because it was rather good.
And a coozie is indeed a little foam container intended to keep the beverage cool. We have quite a selection of them. Mainly emblazoned with the logos of the Boston sports teams.0 -
I could never figure out why I would need a coozie. That beer is gone LONG before it has a chance to even think about warming up.7

@Stoshew71 Sorry to hear about your divorce. It gets better, believe me.
Finally, I'm not the primary on-call support guy, and will spend the next week as the backup on-call guy before dropping to the back of the rota again. That meant I could go out and run a full 15 miles and not worry about getting called. Except I got called...the primary guy didn't answer his phone, so I had to cut my run short and make my way back to the office. First world problems and all that.
In other news, I made my goal and still have another run planned for tomorrow.9 -
Goal for June:
Continue PT for Plantar fasciitis
50 miles for June – run/walk depending on foot
Incorporate speed work on Tuesdays each week (also dependent upon foot is feeling)

Nothing this week due to work and Vacation Bible School at church. I had a follow up with the Sports Medicine Doctor on Monday and two more physical therapy sessions this week. My foot is feeling much better this week, so they have released me from physical therapy but I need to continue the exercises at home. Return to running and see how the foot cooperates.
@biketheworld – Sports Medicine doctor suggested Dr. Scholl’s heel cups and those have helped. I only have them in my everyday walking shoes, but I want to try them in my running shoes. I will look into the Walk/Fit.
@kevassen – I went to a Sports Medicine doctor for the PF because I did not want to stop running. 14 PT visits alter and my foot is better. This week is the first week of no pain since beginning of May – but no running this week.
@LaDispute57- At a race in New Orleans one of the spectators offered me an orange slice and I took it in the middle of the 10K. I started feeling very light headed afterwards and my time slowed down the last two miles. At the end, a friend of my explained that the orange slice was probably lined with vodka before freezing and that is what made me lightheaded.

@Stoshew71 I’m sorry. Since I know you both and your sweet daughter you know this makes me extra sad. You know how to find me if you need a friend. Just take care of yourself.
I decide to take another rest day today.
Is anyone racing this weekend? Good luck!!1 -
Good luck tomorrow @polskagirl01 !!!
I almost forgot to say - did my first non-race run after my marathon this morning (not counting the crazy 2 mile up a hill and back the day after)
Just once round the park, but it felt goooooooood. All of it. I felt strong. Sort of the opposite of Saturday.
Had a look at the Higdon plans, but they’ve changed the website and it looks like there are less variations now. I can’t commit to running 5/6 days a week so have hunted for some other 10k plans. Basically I just want some ideas for getting speed up, 3/4 runs a week, although my primary focus is to do more strength training. Oh, and a half marathon I signed up for at the end of July.3 -
Missed like 4 pages of posts today... erf! I did read though...
I do not drink, but many of the big races around here are connected one way or another back to beer. I know a lady that missed her target time in last years marathon because she stopped TWICE for beer. Dope.
@Stoshew71 Sorry to hear that man.
@midwesterner - In skimming to catch up, am I reading right that you have no one checking on you? That is not cool man.
Talk about going vegan... I might consider it but CHeeseburgers exist, and that pretty much sinks it.
@polskagirl01 Good luck on your race!
Sorry if I missed anything else. Y'all talk too much sometimes
1 -
No run today... at least not yet. It is 92 with a 71 dew point. Hoping the temperature will come down later - but thinking about getting up before the heat tomorrow and trying a longer run. If I do that than running late tonight will be detrimental. Decisions!0

@sarahthes Have fun at the Edmonton Canada Day race. Hope your family can stay there for the Fireworks.
That's the one unfortunate thing about our " Midnight Sun " it really does not allow fireworks to show in their full glory.
@Stoshew71 Yes take care of your precious Daughter and yourself.1 -
@PastorVincent Skip tonight... run long early tomorrow.
Also, I heard if you stop tee-totalling and start drinking, you can shave almost 7 seconds off your pace. Or at least not give a shlt if you don't.4 -

I do fine by myself. People will notice if I don't show up for work, though.

So much to read thru and comment on!
@Stoshew71 - was wondering where you had gotten off to and was hoping it was work related. Sorry you are going through such a rough time and I hope things smooth out soon! I have no personal experience other than going thru my parent's and it was rough on them and on us, but it did get better.
@midwesterner85 - the whole BG thing is really scary to me. Mostly because I have so very little experience with it. It amazes me that you are so at ease with it but I guess that comes from dealing with it for so long. I would definitely have a service dog just for the extra security and peace of mind.
I have been to many races with beer or wine at the end and I just couldn't... I like a good dark beer but not after racing. I am pretty sure I would just puke. I had wine once (Temecula Wine Country HM) - took a couple of sips and tossed it out. I did get a nice wine glass though In SF there are always people out in the neighborhoods with goodies from shots, cups of beer, to my favorite - ice cold watermelon chunks!
I do think Flying Pig may have to be on my list of destination races... because BACON (double BACON)! Maybe we will have a MFP team there.
The Oak Barrel HM and the Kentucky Derby HM will probably also make it to my wish list event though I don't drink whiskey or bourbon but my husband does!
@RespectTheKitty - glad the fog is lifting a little from your bout with depression and you are able to get back out for a run/walk.
@polskagirl01 - I wonder if that guy thought you were trying to run away from your family Good Luck with the HM tomorrow!
@garygse - that on call business is why I was always so happy to have been moved from client delivery to technical sales support even if the move was because they moved my entire team offshore! I no longer had to be on call or take calls for anyone else who didn't answer!2 -
Had planned to get my long run in today as it is my husband's last day of work and we are hanging out with friends and celebrating tomorrow. I even set my alarm to get up super early for me and went to bed early too... 9.5 hours later I woke up; slept through the alarm and apparently turned it off. I was also incredibly sore when I woke up from a tough training session yesterday. I knew I would be sore, just didn't expect it to hit until later in the day. So I went out anyway figuring I would run as long as I could or until it got too hot... managed to get in a bit over half of my long run at a pretty decent pace for me. I did have an issue in mile 4 where my right fore foot and toes kept falling asleep and then felt like they were burning. I must have changed my gait in response because my ITB on that side also started complaining and I have never had ITB issues. At one point my toes actually hurt to the point that I had to stop, walked to a bench and take my shoe off to stretch my toes. Running the last 1+ miles home was much more comfortable but I am not at all sure what was different in my shoe/sock.

I assume he is a pet and not actually a trained alert dog?
I have pet cats and once woke up with one of the cats chewing through the tubing on my pump and looking up at me as if to see whether I was ok. It turns out I had gone low while sleeping and this was before I had a pump that would automatically suspend insulin delivery. By chewing through the tubing, he helped my BG stop dropping as much and as quickly. He might have known what he was doing, but there have been similar circumstances where he didn't help me out the same way; so I can't be sure. The other cat has woken me up when I was low and would not have woken without some 'help.'
I live alone, so if I go low while sleeping (I won't feel it while asleep), I just don't wake up. There was once in 2009 where I had a seizure while sleeping and it was a big problem. I was unemployed at the time (just like a lot of people in 2009), so nobody expected me to be anywhere and nobody knew I was missing or that anything was wrong. I clearly woke up at some point and took care of stuff - eating, getting water, I even applied to jobs and stuff at some point during the 2-3 days afterwards. But I had some serious brain interruption. I was very confused at the time and lost most of my memories. Since then, I've recovered a lot of old memories from before but some of my childhood is still pretty blurry. What ultimately happened is that I guess I called my parents (I don't remember doing this even today) and sounded off. My brother was going through my area soon so they asked him to stop in and check on me. He was driving home from vacation with his then-girlfriend (none of us live real close to each other, but they would be going past my city on their way home). This was a long-term relationship and I had met her several times before. When he showed up, I recognized him and introduced myself to her as I thought it was the first time meeting her. Since I was obviously acting like I didn't know things that I should have known, he took me to a couple of doctors. In the end, no doctor could find anything wrong that explained the memory loss (aside from it was obvious I had a seizure based on tongue being chewed up and it was probably from low BG).
Yes, my dog is just a pet, and a neurotic mess of one, too.
Your description of that terrible night is horrifying and has me in tears. My cousin's wife died in her sleep from a hypo. It is my biggest fear with my son. We've had some tech difficulties with his CGM (we're getting a new one soon) and I much prefer it when my phone alerts when he goes low, not just his own receiver.
I really hate diabetes.

Hugs to everyone in this thread having a difficult month. Hope that things turn upwards soon.

There is so much promising work being done in this field!
Dr Jason Fung from Toronto has some absolutely fantastic results in reversing this disease.
He also endeavors to reduce the quantity of medication people need.
He is a geriatric doctor per se but his practice and practical real world research is good information for the average bear, so to speak. Lol
He is not a research doctor but has found excellent results in using common sense and logically appling knowledge instead of being shackled by ‘big medicine’.
Many excellent doctors are finding the same success.
Also, there are some of the new food shows on Netflix and Prime that are showing reversals in chronic medical conditions.
Unlike Supersize Me which was just a guy eating stupidly for a month, these newer shows are informative AND interesting.
Juicing, Juice fasting, fasting, all plant, vegan, not vegan, a huge China study on cancer that factors in everything you could think of including diet (the results are massive in encyclopedic form) plus mucho information that has been accumulated over the last 50 years.
There was even one bonafide researcher that mentioned seeing success in reversing both type 1 and 2 diabetes.
Sorry I don’t remember exactly which one.
I have basically been watching and researching the ‘new’ information.
Not really new but when taken as part of the larger picture plus the way our food sources and processing have changed in just our lifetime, it is vital to re-educate ourselves.
Biology 101 doesn’t cover it anymore.
Of course, you need to sort out reality vs agenda in some but still there are so many excellent shows that give you power over your diet, the way that understanding tobacco addiction saved some from ever getting hooked and helped others kick it to the curb.

@HonuNui I've been following the eruption these past almost 8 weeks and it's really quite staggering the scale of the catastrophe in slow motion. I think you have definitely got everyone else beat in the temperature department!1

But the tangents!!!!!!

@teerai - you are so right! There has been so much advancement of alternative medicine in the areas of cancer treatments, heart disease and others... from nutritionists to acupuncturists and the allopathic doctors are starting to see that it is effective and people don't want to just pop a pill any longer. You are starting to see, finally, a combined effort to treat, that looks at all aspects from stress and nutrition to fixing the physical damage. Just the studies and treatments now that show the affect of sugar/carbs on some cancers and of estrogens on others is pretty amazing. Starve them of those and the cancers recede or die out... says a lot about our fast food, big gulp diets.
I really hope they can take on the whole diabetes issue too as it is such a big problem but really requires such an individualized approach! There are so many alternatives these days that you really have to do your research.
@skippygirlsmom - awesome gift! She knows you so well!
@HonuNui - whatever that is it looks dangerous! The pictures from the eruption are amazing and frightening all at the same time!4
