Friendship ethics...
say one of your friends promised something outlandish for doing something highly unlikely (say taking you on a cruise if they won the lottery), do you hold them to it should it come to pass?
I only ask because something did happen, and I got shafted by the bastage.

wait... he gave you the shaft?
Hold it.
maybe stroke it a little....drop the soap and give a little wiggle when you pick it up...
and see how quickly he remembers his promises...

It also depends how close you are to your friend. I have thousands of friends that I know personally and I am cool with...but in my closest friend set, there are only 5-7 people.
And another thing, it depends on your friend. If you known him/her for a while, and they aren't good at keeping their word...then there ya go!
That's why I am careful to say certain things and I measure my words very carefully. That sucks you got shafted.
If I say I'm going to do something, I'm going to do it. Like for instance, I live near NYC, and I am getting into a career in real estate. I told my closest bros. "When I make my first deal, after I put away money to reinvest and market, and I give away 10% to my church, we're all going to the city and we are going to party our *kitten* off.
Will it be expensive, yes. Will I do it, yes...because I made a promise and promises should be kept. My clique shares in each others successes.0 -
Wait...A&M has a football team?0

I recently made one of these deals. I'm hoping that it doesn't happen. And secretly hoping that it does.0

LO Freakin L  Not at all. People do view it that way, but I have NEVER seen myself in that light. I have moved around a lot my whole life and have met pretty cool people and I keep contact and try to build decent friendships/relationships with those around me.0 -

You shouldn't "hold" a friend to anything like that. Either they do it, or they don't. It's not a business contract, it's not even an equitable contract (you didn't give them any consideration (collateral) for them to do something in return).
If you want to ask them if they really meant it, go ahead. But, any judge is going to laugh you out of court if you try to make your friend do this.
Come to think of it, maybe it would be better for your friend to know that you view the friendship of having less worth than getting your promised money or trip.0 -

I have thousands of followers, who I refer to as friends when I talk to them on my fitness page on Facebook, but, I guarantee you, I do not know all 3120 of them...0 -

That's an interesting take. I see your point. Because friendships aren't contracts...it isn't a business.
Myself personally, I come from the train of thought that people listen to what you say, even if you say something jokingly or flippantly. That's why I don't make promises that I can keep. I was raised with an old school mentality.0 -

I don't need to know about your sexual antics. Did he come through and buy you the cruise?0 -

Hold it.
No. There needs to be more than just holding. It needs a little motion.0 -

You're 1000% right. Though, I just view the word "aquantances" as a "not as good enough" word. So everyone gets lumped into the friend category......0 -
That's called a "bet" and it's gambling, which is "void for illegality."
These are legal terms that I've placed in quotations, so if you need me to further define, please let me know.0 -
