Has anyone tried keto?!

So my step mother and a few friends have actually lost tons of weight by doing keto! My problem is that I’m a vegetarian so I’m not sure if keto would really work for me? I haven’t looked too much into it. Thought I’d check here and see if anyone has any success stories or if there are any vegetarian ways of doing it!
Pros are obviously multiple people I know personally who it’s worked for!
Cons the whole only fat thing has me sort of skeptical because I love fresh veggies and salads (again I haven’t looked too much into it I’m not sure how it all works or why I can eat)
My family and I have been talking about it lately anyone have any advice?
I’ve been doing the cabbage soup diet and it’s been GREAT for me! Although it’s not exactly a long term type of diet and I’m looking for a lifestyle change something that I can really commit to!
TIA!!

Keto does not lead to more weight loss. Only eating less calories than your body needs leads to weight loss. It doesn't matter if you eat keto, only carbs, cabbage soup (gulp) or drink beer. The type of the food you eat might have a big influence on satiety though, and how energetic you feel. However, everyone is different. Some people thrive on eating lots of fats, others on carbs.11
-
My advice?
Don't "diet." Eat what you like and helps you feel satiated. Eat a well balanced diet. Just eat less. That's how all weightloss works.14 -

Keto is tougher when no meat is included, but it is doable if you want to try it.
For weight loss, the main benefits are usually a decreased appetite and often better health (which tends to make weight management easier). A calorie deficit is still needed for weight loss.19 -

Your step mother and friends lost weight by being in a calorie deficit. They just happen to have achieved that by eating a keto diet. You can achieve a calorie deficit by eating any which way you like!16

Pros of doing keto: None, because you like veggies and salads seems to be the primary foods you enjoy. Mind you, you can still eat some veggies on keto, but you will be limiting yourself.
Cons: Keto doesn't increase fat loss, every diet gives you the same fat loss rate. Your step mother and few friends lost weight because they reduced their calories by removing an entire macro which would've given them the same results had they eaten more carbs at the same number of calories.
Moral of the story, don't do keto because "it worked for my step mother and a few friends". Do keto only if you just enjoy a high fat diet while staying at a caloric deficit.20 -
You are already limiting food groups by being vegetarian. Do you really want to limit it even further? While possible to be vegan/vegetarian and do keto it is very difficult to obtain adequate micros/macros. Also, one diet is typically high carb while the other is low carb which creates even more challenges.
There is no magic to keto. Research from meta data shows that over a 12 month period weight loss is the same in regards to high carb and low carb diets. The reason some people have great success with it is because the higher fat and protein helps with satiety which prevents overeating.
Finally, the more restrictive a diet is, the less likely it is for people to adhere to it. Long term success with dieting is rare (around 20%) and those with the greatest success are those that choose food choices they can stick with for the rest of their lives.5 -
Has anyone tried keto? Only about every other new poster that comes to the boards these days. Try using the search feature. You can even search vegetarian keto.
Do people lose weight on keto and make it sound miraculous like your step mom and friends? All. The. Time.
Is there any truth to their claims? That depends. There is no long term advantage to weight loss for a ketogenic diet over any other diet that created a calorie deficit. Some people enjoy it as a way of eating because they find fat satiating.
Is keto a good fit for you? Shrug. My initial thought is no based on your love of veggies and salads. Where does fruit factor into your diet? That’s also seriously limited in keto.
Cabbage soup diet? What is this 1982? How is that healthy, satiating or sustainable? Where’s the protein and fat?18 -

For some reason you object to a Ketogenic diet being healthful? I'm not saying that it is the only way to gain better health, nor did I say it was the best way. It Is a diet that can lead to better health for people with insulin resistance (diabetes, prediabetes, PCOS, NAFLD and Alzheimer's, as well as the associated CVD) and it can help some with treating some chronic health problems like some autoimmune issues, epilepsy, brain injury, etc. That's not just opinion.
When people are healthy, it helps with weight management. Thats been seen to be true too.
Again, I did not say keto was best, or the only way. It is just one way for some to achieve weight loss and some better health. I said, "for weight loss, the main benefits are usually a decreased appetite and often better health (which tends to make weight management easier)."
I don't keep meta analysis bookmarked to show strangers on the interwebz that better health can make weight management easier or that keto is able to make improvements in some people's health.16 -

Keto can be a valuable tool for some. This has always been my position. So, please don't paint me as anti keto as you are want to do when you are called out for not providing valid proof sources. I am anti vague, specious and unprovable claims that use terms like "often better health" that are totally unsubstantiated. Maybe it can. Maybe it can't. It depends on the conditions one would be referring to, how the improvement would be measured and what constitutes often.18 -

This is a pointless discussion. You wish me to be more specific, but how can one say exactly how a diet will help everyone? That's goofy.
I'm hopeful that you are aware of how some diets can benefit some people's health. I don't want to convince you of anything or prove anything to you. Or respond anymore to you anymore. This is going nowhere.

@nvmomketo I understand where you're coming from, but it's important that we pick our words carefully with new dieters. Suggesting that keto often leads to better health more often than not translates into "keto is the best diet for health for everyone" because new dieters lack the information nuances to make non-binary conclusions. This is especially important when OP states a preference for a diet that isn't very compatible with keto and would feel pressured to eat in a way they don't enjoy and can't sustain because they think it's "better for you". Providing concise information that sets people up for success is better, regardless of our own dieting practices and preferences.
To OP:
People lose weight by eating fewer calories than they burn. This happens on every single diet that you can imagine that works for someone. Keto has the added factor of quick water weight loss, which is why your stepmother and friends lost "a ton of weight". Any weight lost beyond that is simply because they ate fewer calories than they burned. If at any point they decide to stop doing keto, a lot of that water weight will come back within a few days.
Finding a "lifestyle" is not a single choice you commit to, it's a process of trial and error and investigation to find which eating practices you find pleasant and sustainable. Keep in mind that your results will likely be slower than on any crash diet you've been on, which is a good thing, because you want to lose weight in a healthy sustainable way. Here is a good "diet" to try for starters, after which you may feel more confident to customize things to your liking.

@chelseamj91 Keto has been my way of eating since Oct 2014. While I did not do it to lose weight but to try and reverse some very serious health issues yet without trying to lose weight it was just a side effect of just only eating to manage my joint and muscle pain. I am down 50 pounds and have maintained that loss for the past three years eating all I want. As my serious health issues slowly resolved so did my weight. Key in my case Keto seems to have resolved my strong cravings that lead to binging.
Now at age 67 with better health and health markers than 30 years ago I plan to eat the Keto/LCHF way the rest of my life because it works so well for me.
Hope you find a WOE that works well for you. Work to find the Way Of Eating that works for your body more than what others do or say.
Best of success.

Cool! I lost the 8kg I wanted to lose, and then some 8 more and maintained it while being on a diet high in carbs. I would not have managed keto as I love my carbs, and fats don't still my hunger well. So yes, we're all different.
Which makes me wonder if there's some actual research into what macro works best for which percentage of the population with regards to energy, satiety, etc.6 -
I don't think it's about a "diet" but about finding my own healthier lifestyle. 3 months ago I started with very low carbs and over time I am now averaging about 25 % carbs, 37 % fat and 38 % protein. That suits me just fine - I just have to make sure to stay within the MFP suggested daily calories. So far I have lost about 35 pounds, 130 pounds to go.7
-
The aim of all weight loss diets whether explicitly stated or not is to reduce your calorie load over an extended period of time. Picking a diet that suits other people isn't the way to make the process of reducing your calorie intake easier! Pick a method that suits you and your eating preferences.
If you take away all the noise around the currently fashionable diet method does it even sound sensible suggesting you should massively limit your vegetables and cut down on your salads?
If someone likes a high fat, very low carb diet, or alternatively have specific health issues that low carb might help then yes keto could be a good choice for them.
My suggestion would be to simply log your current food intake over a couple of weeks and then review those weeks to see where you can take away some calories in a way that keeps an overall healthy diet that you can enjoy. Might be reducing snacks, might be reducing portion size, might be avoiding drinking your calories, might be skipping breakfast, might be making some low cal substitutes.......8 -

It can work the other way around too. I did not say it could not.
So the “some” people who might experience better health as a result of the diet are those who have Insulun Resistance. Why not mention that detail when you say “often leads to health improvements for those who are IR. By leaving off this important detail it suggests to people like the OP, or anyone who is considering the diet for weight loss because of all the hype they hear IRL, that they will experience it. The OP mentioned nothing of a medical condition that suggests low carb may provide benefits to that condition - but the vague and sweeping generalization of “often better health” sounds tempting for anyone.
Again, it is the unproven claims of miracle cures, vague “better health” and the suggestion that keto/IR negates the news for a calorie deficit that will always get challenged. It just doesn’t do the keto community who do have legit reasons and good success with the diet a favor when the overzealous claims imply benefits that won’t happen, and will invite challenges from those who know this is an overstatement.

Keto is tougher when no meat is included, but it is doable if you want to try it.
For weight loss, the main benefits are usually a decreased appetite and often better health (which tends to make weight management easier). A calorie deficit is still needed for weight loss.
I don't keep meta analysis bookmarked to show strangers on the interwebz that better health can make weight management easier or that keto is able to make improvements in some people's health.
often better health suggests that anyone who does a keto diet could see and is likely to see health improvements. Are you saying those health benefits would begin even if a person does not have insulin resistance?
For some, yes.How would you differentiate the health benefits of keto from those resulting from weight loss alone?
If there is a benefit without weight loss, then you know. Improved BG control is common even without weight loss. Why do you think the health benefits make weight management easier and not the other way around?

I do indeed follow Keto. And, I love it. I do this, for full disclosure, because of high A1C. I love carbs...really do...but they are not so kind to this guy!
I will suggest this, though. It is not the diet - no matter what it is called - that creates weight loss. It is eating in a caloric deficit. Plain and simple. All of the "diet" stuff is simple a way to help you to maintain your caloric deficit. So, I would suggest that you find something that works for you....point blank and period.
Now, I must be doing something wrong because I eat at least three salads a day. I just put on some amazing and fatty salad dressing (think blue cheese or sweet idalia onion or whatever) and go to town. I will also out some New York Sharp Cheddar Cheese on it, some boiled eggs on it...some sliced boiled eggs on it...
And, I do eat veggies. Usually, when I do have "veggies" I will eat brocholli or asparagus. I do not eat veggies every day....but likely five out of seven days.
The thing about Keto that is so difficult (let's be honest....cutting down to 20g of Carbs a day *CAN* be tough) is that it is so restrictive. It is possible to consume - depending on the type of Keto that you are following (there are - and I believe that most people would agree with this - four types of Keto....when most people talk about Keto, per - se, then they are likely talking about the Standard Ketogenic Diet. That is the 20g of Carbs...roughly....or, 75% of your calories come from Fats, 20% come from Protein and that 5% come from Carbs).
I might suggest that you - as I have said a few times in this post - find what works for you. This is all about sustainability. This is all about compliance. This is all about "healthy". I mean, if you can follow a way of eating that you absolutely HATE but you force yourself to follow that way of eating because it works then I would suggest that eventually you will "fail" and that what you have been doing was unhealthy.
Does this make sense?10 -

Great post. Thanks for the transparency, I’m sure info like this is helpful for anyone considering, but not sure about keto.
Thank you, lady! There is a lot of "interesting ideas" out there about Keto. When I started investigating this, because of the high A1C, I was overwhelmed with tons and tons of absolutely garbage information. Of course, when you know absolutely nothing about a given topic it is really challenging to determine what is valid information and what is "a sales pitch". I find - and this applies to just about everything out there....we just happen to be talking about Keto - that there are a lot of people out there with an Agenda. I like to follow the "follow the money" train of thought. It helped me to filter out that "garbage information".
I try to be open and honest and share my experiences and to paint a little bit of a picture about myself. I am "off"....in that I can eat the same food for lunch (for example) every day of the year. Pretty sure that most can not do that. I can. That might be useful information about me....and provide some insight into the info that I am providing.
Anyway, I also try to stay out of the "discussions" about Keto. General comment. There are a ton of ignorant people out there (notice that I did not say "stupid"....ignorant is totally different) and a lot of really smart people out there. Sometimes it is a challenge to make the distinction. My daddy taught me something really important a long time ago: Don't ever argue with a fool....people will eventually not be able to distinguish who the fool is.
Anyway, I hope that this helps. Keto is amazing - for me. But, it is really restrictive. And, it is not a magic pill. That does not exist. No matter what anyone says (remember, "follow the money"). Enjoy! I am going to go eay some bacon and eggs now! All this talk about Keto has made my mouth water! :-)4 -
amusedmonkey wrote: »@nvmomketo I understand where you're coming from, but it's important that we pick our words carefully with new dieters.

It's information hidden on keto is why I cringe when it comes to the keto movement and diets in general. A lot of people join that diet based on partial information (like in this case) or just wrong information and it's too bad. Too much importance is given to diets which is why I follow no diet in particular other than eating a balanced diet that hits my macros, fiber goal and micronutrients. Specific diets (like keto, paleo, atkins..) is only if you struggle with discipline or have health issues, then they can be usefull to help you acheive your goal. In the end, calories is king.7 -

But you didn't say for some people. You said for many. Big difference. I wouldn't have picked up on it if you said some. Many gives the impression of wide spread benefits for the general population. It is a false impression without more specifics as to who the "many" are and why it helps them.
It comes across and confirmation bias propaganda. Not just to me. You've gotten fairly consistent and widespread pushback about that. It appears you can't see through your bias to recognize that.
So, as far as you can demonstrate, keto can improve health for some not many. And I will again invite you to submit proof sources if you disagree with that.9 -

I'm going to assume the OP is a grown up who will look into the information given and decide what is best for her. You too can offer information, or more of your opinion, and the OP can use what info you offer as well.
Again, you didn't say "some". You said "many". That is what has been challenged. You would have more credibility if you didn't spend multiple posts trying to rationalize, spin, defend and parse what you said and you would just admit that you make a mistaken statement and correct it to "some". I don't think anyone would disagree with that.6 -

Keto is tougher when no meat is included, but it is doable if you want to try it.
For weight loss, the main benefits are usually a decreased appetite and often better health (which tends to make weight management easier). A calorie deficit is still needed for weight loss.
Or epilepsy or some autoimmune diseases or some with IBS or some with migraines or some with developmental delays. Not just IR. It can help some people with some health problems even if it is just with reduced appetite to help with weight management if weight loss helps their health. Other diets can help too. They may even help more. I'm not making any grand claims here. Just offering information on the possible benefits, as
These claims are not unusual, nor guaranteed, and many are proven in trials, but I'm not bothering to search for them for you.

So, in a nutshell, you can repeatedly afford to take the time to make these claims on every keto thread that pops up, yet, when asked to substantiate the source of these "proven trials" you simply can't be bothered.
