Locked Diary..Why?

I post a lot, mention I am open when asked or when someone is looking for open diaries. I eat a lot of processed foods and added sugar; the kind of stuff a lot is posters think is evil. But no one ever gives me a hard time about it. I think the people who keep their's private so they don't get a lot of feedback are worried about nothing.7

Oh i am the opposite. My diary is wide open and I dare somebody to make a judgement. They'll get deleted with the quickness lol! Luckily, my friends list is small and nothing but supportive.2 -
When i've had my diary open, I don't think I ever had anyone comment positively or negatively on my food choices. Admittedly, my friends list does tend to consist mostly of plant based people (or ex-plant based people at least) so negative evangelism directed at me would be sort of limited.0

A MFP friend just posted about how motivation and mood are impacted by scale fluctuations and plateaus. Not asking for help, not saying her plan wasn't working, just posting about her feelings. One of her friends posted something about how she should do X, Y, and Z because she looked at her diary and could "see at a glance" where she was going wrong. I think it was very frustrating for the poster who was just talking about her emotional state to be diary-policed.8

It's nobody's business but my own.
I log only to keep track of my cals and I'm not seeking anyone's help or "approval" regarding what I eat.1 -

Guess you don't read that many threads. There
are certain issues where judgment is so bigoted on MFP that there is no point in trying to express a contrary opinion.

My diary is too unorganized, half logged (I log meticulously, but not all on MFP), with weird food combinations and entries added for the sake of numbers, the entries of one day can span several days or vice versa. I tried "clean logging" for a while in order to open my diary to help people with ideas, but I found it too restrictive so I abandoned that experiment. I don't want my chaotic ways to be used against me in discussions and me having to explain how and why I do things on my diary derailing discussions.3

I will echo what some others have said- I don't want or need judgments from others, and I'm more likely to be honest if I know I'm the only one looking at it. I know that a lot of people like the increased accountability and if that works for you, that's great. I've never been someone that can do well under pressure. Last year, I was doing exceptionally well with diet and exercise and decided to enter a "health challenge" at work.
I pretty much immediately fell off the wagon, even though I'd been doing well on my own for months and was seeing good results. I felt embarrassed and judged about some of the choices I made- things that worked for me but others felt the need to judge me for (drinking diet pop, not having enough fruits and veggies, eating too much sodium or too many carbs, not increasing my workouts, etc.) I couldn't handle the pressure.
Another time, I was doing really well with my own workout system. I was bringing my gym clothes to work and changing right away at the end of the day so that I wouldn't make excuses to skip the gym. A work friend saw me and begged me to work out with her, even if it was just a couple of days per week. To make a very long story short, this led to me working out less and less and eventually stopping all together.
I have learned that fitness and dieting for me is a solo activity. This time around on MFP, I'm not even accepting any friend requests, even though my diary is closed. I have to do things on my own terms and not worry about other people.6 -
Why not? The default is to have it private and I haven't found a need to change that. I don't have nor need friends on MFP, I don't ask for diet related advice, I track homemade foods more than I do packaged foods give I make most of my meals, and so on. I just don't have the need to go in and change the diary setting to public and even less so to friends only.1

Mine is open to friends, if they're interested, I sometimes look at other friends diaries for new ideas or just out of interest to compare against mine. I don't eat enough fruit and veg so I get motivated to try harder when I see how other people have fitted lots into their allowance.
Also if I know someone can see what I'm eating it's easier to resist cake, there is so much cake around at the moment due to July being a popular birthday month.0 -
I honestly don't understand this need to share all kinds of information online. This includes a food diary.2
