many of you need to get over to the gaining weight section!

A very large number of you trying to "lose weight" are skinny fats.. get yourselves over to the gaining weight section and get asking questions about bulking.. srs

with the way most of you are going your gonna end up with little lean muscle mass, eating 1200 calories or less, getting down to your goal weight and still being a wobbly soft lardy with all your jiggly areas are still jiggling.

I actually reckon as high as half of the people looking to lose weight here would benefit more(aesthetically) from going on a clean bulk and lifting heavy weights. Focusing on achieving a decent lean muscle mass is the ONLY way you can look toned, not from cardio and not from dieting.

If you dont believe me look at the picture below..

OMG the prophets were right!!!! I'm so glad you've come on here to point out the errors of the MFP nation. What the hell would we do without you!!!

From OP's pictures, he looks to know what he's talking about with skinny fat. I have lots of jiggly bits and will likely have a lot more jiggly bits when I get down to a "normal" BMI. I'll deal with them when I get there.

Good post. I agree...I initially lost lots of weight ( and this on 1800!), and got really, really flabby. I'm trying to work my way back and lose some bodyfat while maintaining my lean muscle.

He might have a point, though. Maybe we've been brainwashed into thinking our BMIs are the end all and be all. I simply can't maintain at a low or even low middle BMI. A combination of weight lifting, cardio and diet is ideal, though, I think, but the guy just wants to help.

Wholehearted agree. I have got down to near enough my goal weight but I am still not happy and I know even if I lose more I am still not going to be happy as I am untoned and flabby. Really need to think about doing some exercise to sort this out but just don't know where to start.

I disagree with you, you are confusing two different things.
If most people were to go on a clean bulk, then they would gain weight. That is the whole definition of 'bulk'.
The picture does not show any gain in muscle mass it shows a decrease in %bodyfat therefore resulting in more muscle mass definition and for this to happen you have to eat at a deficit while lifting weights i.e. cut / diet

I wouldn't say it's the ONLY way to get toned (and this is coming from someone who loves heavy lifting, and has done 2 bulk-cut cycles now)...If you're young, have an alright level of muscle already (no previous crash dieting or anything), you do some form of resistance exercises regularly that challenge you (not necessarily heavy lifting - although it is fantastic!), and lose weight slowly/sensibly, then chances are you'll probably look pretty toned when you lean out.

However, there are many people that have a lot to lose and/or favour low calorie diets to lose weight fast, and/or are afraid of anything above a 3lb dumbell. In those cases, when they lose weight, they're probably going to lose considerable muscle along with fat and the chances of looking "toned" at the end just get slimmer.

In short, I agree that lifting is fantastic and that doing a lean bulk would help plenty of people. Although the main points would be that you need to eat properly, not rush things, do some form of strength training/resistance work BEFORE you get to your goal. Once you're at your goal, it gets harder to sort out if you're still left too squishy/soft for your liking, and a bulk might be the best/easiest option by then.

You are completely wrong. People on 1200 calorie diets trying to get to their goal weight need to check out the 'Eat more to lose weight' section, and the road map.

People looking to gain weight and/or muscle should focus on bulk and lifting. You are confusing two different things.

Also, you should work on your communication skills. Calling half the people on MFP 'skinny fat' is never going to go down well.

    Um yeah ok..
  • This is my problem. I don't have much more weight to lose, maybe 5 at most more lbs. I particularly like pilates. I don't like the muscle look on women. Id rather just look thin yet be strong and have a little, muscle definition. But the whole buff looking thing..not my style at all. So don't you think pilates is good enough for what I'm trying to achieve?

Do bodyweight exercises. Check the free videos at nerdfitness, fitnessblender.com, the Befit channel on youtube, etc. fill small/large water/soda bottles with water, start with cans, etc. Be creative.

What if what the OP stated is not your goal? I love how he and many others assume we all want that.

Love to know how im supposed to lift anything with arthritis in BOTH hands when even lifting the vacuum cleaner is agony and as for washing windows i almost cry with the pain. I will stick to cardio/walking thanks despite the pain in my knees from arthritis in my knees also . I might have to accept getting to skinny fat for the sake of my heart and high blood pressure.

Same overe here-when I mentioned weight lifting to my husband he was horrified lol. It's a preference-different people like different things, and there's no right or wrong here :) Me personally, I'm lean and the only exercise I do is brisk walking and 2 miles of slow jogging a week. After losing 50lbs and giving my body some time to adjust, my stomach is flat and my legs are toned from the walking I do. No jiggly parts here! My bmi is 19.7 and I have no idea what my bf% is, don't care either. I'm healthy, feel great, and look pretty darn good too, in or out of clothes ;)
