What did you do with clothes that are now too large for you?

Keep or donate? If you are keeping them, why?

I am keeping 1 set of jeans and a t-shirt from my largest size and donating the rest. the one set it for later comparisons.14

In the past, I've kept larger clothes because I wasn't confident that I'd maintain the loss (and I was right). However, I'm glad that I also kept a lot of the smaller clothes when I regained, since I didn't have to buy so much on the way back down!
This time around, I feel like I have a good grip on what I'm doing and what I need to do to maintain the (much larger) loss. I have the knowledge I need now, thanks to MFP, to rein it in if I lapse and start to regain. There is no way I want to go back to the size I used to be, so I'm donating almost everything I've shrunk out of.
I have cats that like to climb on me, so I keep some old baggy clothes to wear around the house so they don't ruin my good stuff. And I've kept one t-shirt and pair of jeans from my biggest size for comparison. But everything else goes as soon as it starts to look too loose!
Plus, I've benefited an awful lot from nice clothes that other people have donated, as I've gone down in sizes. I was unemployed for a long time and would never have been able to afford even a few brand new items in each size as I shrank. I really appreciate that, so I'm happy to donate my own unwanted clothing and return the favour to those who are still on their way down.20 -
hah! I've been wondering this myself. Do people keep their clothes that no longer fit just in case?3
-
I kept them so quite a while (because i didnt want to buy new clothes yet) then I donated them. although it would be fun to keep one pair if you have a good amount to lose to compare them to your new smaller sized ones0
-
Keeping them for some time, I'm working out in a few (don't really care how I look when working out or on track)
Then I will eventually donate.2 -
I've donated most, but kept a few items. The items I've kept are mostly tops that I can wear on "bloated" days, as well as a few special t-shirts.5
-
I donated them if they were in good condition. I decided that the small fortune I would have to spend on a larger sized wardrobe would be a good motivation to keep the weight off.9
-
I am keeping two pairs of big pants that whisper "good job, rockstar!" every time I open that drawer. The rest I donate.17

i donate mine too charity, however l also buy my smaller ones from charity10

Just in case what? I think having that mindset is going to set you up to regain all the weight back. Get rid of everything and it is great motivation to stay at your new lower weight so you don't have to buy a bigger wardrobe again.16 -
Kept some and got rid of some. I got rid of my largest clothes when I first lost a lot of weight 6-7 years ago but kept some of my in between sized clothes (part of this also was the transition from college to "adult" world aka business casual). This time, I am keeping my larger clothes to be used as maternity clothes when needed. After that, I will get rid of them.4
-
I donated most of it (kept some to use as "work on the car" or out in the shop clothes that I don't care about getting dirty). I do wish I had a pair still from when I was at my heaviest 'cause I love those comparison photos.2
-
I donated most of my clothes of a certain size I will probably end up donating more down the road. I kind of keep the clothes that are an in-between size, some shirts that are XL are tight others fit well and same with XXL some fit well where I am at and others I swim in. I think once I fit into all XL shirts and all XXL are swimming on me then I will donate the XXL or keep them for just around the house wear. Same with pants and suits. I don't plan on being that large again so once I hit goal weight there is no real reason to keep those clothes so donating is the best option in my opinion.3

Yeah of course you're right. I never heard of anyone gaining back weight after dieting...

I've donated mine. Took a while though because of the fear that I might need them again - but then it was like "NO i will NOT need them again EVER" and off they all went to charity.9

I can't express strongly enough how important it is to get rid of them; donate, throw away.. whatever. I dragged my feet for a few weeks..because it is weird to get rid of your clothes.
It was expensive too, I will admit.
However..now that I've been maintaining.. I mentally know all my clothes now are my new size..there is no back-up bigger clothes.
I look at it as committing fully to my new smaller size, it is symbolic and means you'll never go back. Believe me, when I start free eating too much... fitting in these clothes keeps me in check and I reel it back i15 -
I donate my clothes. I don't plan on gaining back to where I was. I think I have a few old work shirts hanging around the back of my closet to pull out and see how far I have become.
There are so many people out there that would be able to put old clothes to use that I feel it it selfish for me to hang on to things I am not using anymore.3 -
Skirts, dresses, and tailored trousers, I altered. Some I had to donate.
Jackets and coats I loved, I found a tailor to alter them, others I donated.
A lot of tops, sweaters, and cardigans still fit, the rest I donated.
Jeans, donated.
Except a couple of pair that for some silly reason I just keep- I mean, come on h you've been maintaining almost 10 years, they probably have moth holes in them.
Cheers, h.
P.S. I do still have half a drawer of beautiful colourful bras that are a size too big but can't part with. They make me smile, my collection at the moment is boring black, beige, and white.8 -

Well, I guess if you plan on gaining your weight back, then by all means keep them. Otherwise, like a lot of other people have also said, get rid of them so you stay motivated to not gain the weight back.15 -
Altered my nicer clothes and donated the rest.0
-
Mostly donated. I kept my largest pair of pants for comparison and I kept 2 pairs of 16W jeans because I spent a lot of money having them altered at the waist (got rid of the damned gap!).0
-
I usually keep a range of 3 sizes in my closet--my current size, a few things from the next size down, and a few things from the next size up in case I have a lapse. Anything else gets donated.3
-
I've been donating my clothes as I get smaller, then I get more clothes at the thrift store. I have some clothes I kept from when I was thin, so it's exciting to look forward to fitting into them again.3

Yeah, right...I got rid of everything after losing 60 pounds and damn, I've gained back 20 (my fault, I'm owning this screw up and trying to fix it). All my clothes are a little snug so I went to Goodwill and bought a couple pairs of pants, (I needed something for a funeral ) but not buying anything more.4 -

Well, yeah, it happens. But having nothing that fits you then leaves you with the choice to spend money you may not have on new (or second-hand) larger clothes, or reining in your eating habits and losing the weight again. It might be the difference between only gaining a few pounds before you realise you need to do something, or gaining back the entire 50/80/100/whatever pounds you lost.
I view it in the same kind of way as I did my emigration to a new country. A lot of people keep their homes in their old country "just in case". It gives them something to fall back on if things don't work out. Guess how many of them don't settle well in the new place and give up easily because they know they have a house waiting for them "back home"? (That's also the reason I never referred to the UK as "back home" after I moved away. It ceased to be "home" the moment I got on that plane.)10 -
I kept some bigger clothes for a while just as a reminder but then got sick of them hanging around and donated. I kept a belt that I like to put on sometimes to remind me of how far I have come.1
-
I donated or gave away nearly everthing. I just had a few garments altered. I was in a position where I could replace my entire wardrobe right down in my underwear. So, that's what I did.1

Unfortunately, my two sons are now wearing my fat clothes...and I am wearing their old skinny clothes...16
