    house work, yard work....

I think one of these days, I'll see someone try to figure out sweet kcal burn on a BM.

If "Housework" or "Moving Furniture" or even sometimes "Calisthenics" are logged on my diary- it means I was having some adult fun :blushing:

That's crazy! You shouldn't log anything you do on a daily basis, because your body is used to it. That's what's keeping your weight at the weight it is and not causing you to gain more than you already have. :P The weirdest thing I've seen, is my friend would actually log the time it took her to walk from one class on campus to the other (our campus isn't even big...) "5 Minutes, walking at mod pace." Then she would also log the time she stood in Chem Lab, "Standing by the riverside fishing - 3 hours." You're working against yourself here....

EXACTLY! When I see that it is so obvious that people are sabotaging all their hard work. You can tell they are in some type of denial when they log such things.

Just because people log differently than you do doesn't mean they are in denial or sabotaging their hard work.

I used to log cleaning, cooking, grocery shopping, playing darts, etc. It motivated me to move more and absolutely contributed both to increasing my physical fitness and improving the quality of my diet. It didn't sabotage anything and I knew exactly what I was doing.

I think the "sabotage" comment applies mostly to the people who log little daily things like that just so they can have an extra treat during the day. The first time I used MFP I used to do that... if I wanted a beer for example, I'd go do some menial task around the house for long enough to actually have it. Needless to say, it didn't do me any favors. :P

I've found logging exercise only when you set out to do an exercise (ie; running, jogging, gym, workout dvd etc) is your best bet. Sure, you probably burned a few calories cleaning your house, but it's better off being an unspoken bonus.

I haven't seen anything too crazy logged as exercise. I'll have to start paying more attention.

    (Edited to add quote.)

Another one to add to my list of insane exercise logging - "Preparing food"

    hahah what?

You know... like when you put in vigorous effort. Ain't you never watched Kung Fu Cooking?!
  • Horseback riding

    Bareback.

Does this actually count as exercise? Like, what type of calorie loss does riding a horse consist of?

Horseback riding works your entire body actually.

I just don't even understand. I've seen some of the craziest things being logged for exercise. And no, I am not making up "chewing gum". I have literally seen someone log that. What are some of the craziest things you see people log? And why do people do this? Lol

Gum has calories buddy.... says so on the packaging. Don't find that very crazy to log. I log 25 calorie popsicles, I log 2 ounces of a soda I stole a drink from my fiance, and I log my liquor shots.

The one that made me roll my eyes was "Walking to mailbox".... Now, if you live in the middle of nowhere and your mailbox is a 2 mile round trip... fair enough~

I’ve seen people log chewing gum. I’m not sure what the reason would be…however vitamins and other none calorie items with nutritional value makes sense. I do not just use MFP to track calories. I track nutrition and workouts. I’m sure horseback riding burns a lot of calories… (for whoever thought that was ridiculous).

    To each their own…

I used to do the same thing. If I wanted a cookie and I was out of calories, I'd do some laundry. Clothes got clean, I moved around more than I would have otherwise, and I got to eat a cookie. Win, win, win.

I mean, it doesn't work for everyone and that's fine. But it does work for others and it was quite beneficial for me.

I logged cleaning this weekend. I literally cleaned and moved boxes for a solid 9 hours. I didn't log the entire time, but I counted it since I NEVER spend that much time cleaning at one time. Don't feel like I was cheating at all with that, and my sore arms, legs, and back let me know I was right to log it.

I don't eat back my exercise calories for the most part unless I am extra hungry which happens -- I do log cleaning and such when it is more than my daily effort. If I am lugging that vacuum around the house and working up a sweat -- I log it because I don't do it often.

I do not log grocery shopping, cooking, doing dishes, etc... those things are not hard work or making me break into a sweat.

Sweat is not my real indicator but more if it is an abnormal amount of physical work for me-- I can be on the elliptical machine for 60 minutes and I sweat less than I do trying to make the darn beds!! I don't know why one is so much more exhausting!!

I log my multivitamin pill because i'm vegan so i want to make sure that what i eat is nutritious enough to fill the gap :)
I'm not vegan but I usually log mine, too. Helps me track my micros. I've learned that I always hit my vitamin C and usually my vitamin A, but even with the vitamin I fall drastically below my calcium and iron. Not a good setup for a menstruating woman like me...

Horseback riding works your entire body actually.

I was about to say, I used to ride English, and it is actually a decent workout. I definitely got sweaty, and my first few lessons after long breaks left me with sore legs (and not due to the horses's width).

Breastfeeding! I breastfed, yes, it uses calories, but you really don't move during the process! There is no sweating or increase in your heart rate.

Um, it's not being logged as exercise. It's the recommended way to increase your daily intake to take breastfeeding into account.

    ^This

Agreed, I am exclusively breastfeeding my 3-month-old, so I log it as a -500 calorie food. It has the same effect as logging it as exercise, which some women do. The alternative is to make your calorie goal 500 (or whatever) calories higher but not log breastfeeding.

I've honestly considered putting on the HRM for this, but that's about as sexy as telling my husband we have to stop so I can cut my toenails.

    Edited for typo

I'm not vegan, either, and I log my multi (0 calories) and my DHA supplement (5 calories) for two reasons: (1) to remind me to take them/that I took them; and (2) to log what they gave me as a pregnant woman and now as a nursing mom. Prior to this pregnancy I didn't bother logging my multi, though. You consume it, and it has nutritional value, so why not log it?

Depending on what type, horseback riding can be extremely strenuous.

Ok, being serious for a moment... does anyone think there would be any caloric cost for still hunting? Whenever I go hunting I end up stupidly hungry, but I mean... you didn't do much bro.

Standing still from sun up to sun down, maybe moving a mile total, and holding a rifle at ready for the whole time. I always figured it was just a mental exercise, but the joking made me wonder. (Not that I'd log it, just curious.)

I log my yard work. I live in South Texas and pushing the lawnmower across a corner lot, front and back takes some serious effort in the middle of July. I end up so drenched in sweat that I use two towels before coming into the house and drink 8 bottles of water in about 20 minutes to cool off. And that is all with an 8am start time, not even peak heat.

Hey. I have an open diary, but you don't need to actively promote my exercise logging publicly.

I couldn't remember who logged it, so I posted here in hopes that they would come forward. How YOU doin?
