    For dress socks I wear them with sock suspenders so you have to put those on before pants. Its just way easier. Here's an old picture of what I'm talking about from an advertisement I did a long time ago.

    Underwear, then tomcat's calf garters, then one sleeve of my shirt, one leg of my pants and the left sock - ALWAYS THE LEFT - followed by the other sleeve, then the bowtie, the right sock and finally the last leg and the belt. Unless the pants have braces, then it's a whole different story!
