It cracks me up when you search for a food and see entries like “Tomato - Walmart”. Is the a hybrid or what? Why does MFP allow that kind of nonsense?

Users create food entries. MFP does not.4

Unfortunately, the "verified" green check marks in the MFP database are used for both user-created entries and admin-created entries that MFP pulled from the USDA database. To find admin entries for whole foods, I get the syntax from the USDA database and paste that into MFP.
Note: any MFP entry that includes "USDA" was user entered.
For packaged foods, I verify the label against what I find in MFP. (Alas, you cannot just scan with your phone and assume what you get is correct.)5 -
But does it really matter where the tomato came from? No. There is no need to differentiate between a tomato from Walmart or one picked from your garden.0

Speaking of user-entered entries with USDA in the naming.... I admit, I didn't double-check it, but I have... doubts!

I’d agree there’s no material difference in the calories or nutritional content in a tomato no matter where it comes from, but there’s a reason I search using the supermarket name in the search when I’m logging fresh produce (which is the vast majority of my food).
I find by typing ‘Sainsbury’s baby plum tomatoes’ the results pop up with an entry in grams right at the top. If I just search ‘baby plum tomatoes’ there are a load of entries in cups, or per tomato or ‘handful’ or ‘tomato risotto’ or some other random processed meal that happens to have tomato in it.
So by using the UK supermarket names I’m far more likely to get the accurate entry that works for me. 🤷♀️2 -
What I find funny is a poster asking this question in 2019 and then 3 years later coming back to respond to the reply.
That seems such a random and amusing thing to do.2 -
