Eating after 6:00pm

Does anyone have an opinion about eating dinner after 6:00pm.
I set down with a nutritionist at the end of February. I have taken off 63 pounds but in recent I am slowing down on the weight loss. I have gone back over my notes and I keep re-reading where she says to eat before 6:00pm and if I can't then I should just eat a protein bar and count that as my dinner. If I did this I would never eat dinner, most evenings I am just getting dinner started by 6:00pm. Even food prepping and crock-pot cooking, with my work schedule we can't get dinner consumed before 6:pm.

Calories are the only thing that matter in terms of weight loss.
Meal timing can help with compliance/satiety but will not have any effect on weight loss. Your nutritionist is using 'bro science' from the 80's/90's with that recommendation.36 -

that's pretty silly advice, what if you work the night shift, 6 is breakfast17

Meal timing has nothing to do with weight loss - I lost my weight while often eating dinner past 9:00 PM.
The one thing to keep in mind, however, is that eating later in the evening may impact the number you see on the scale in the next morning (you'll still be digesting dinner) - so while it can impact a weigh-in, it doesn't impact weight loss.18 -
i don't typically eat dinner until 8-9pm at night - so i call hooey on that advice...
IIRC the origination of that advice came from Oprah...and it had to do with the fact that people tended to mindlessly snack at night - so by saying don't eat after 7 they reduced calories and lost weight - which turned into eating after 7 is bad because you'll gain weight18 -
I don't get off work until 6:00. I usually have dinner around 7:00-ish. Then I sit down with my book and have a glass of wine (or two) and a bedtime snack around 10:00. I've gone from a size 12 to a size 2.13

I generally eat dinner between 7:30 and 9:00 pm, both while losing and in maintenance. I lost about 60 pounds, 4 sizes and have maintained that for nearly 3 years now.6

Fire that nutritionist, if possible find a registered dietician if you need help with a meal plan.13

Well a bit this but it isn't necessarily bro science to make the recommendation. It depends on their reasoning. @Karri_Bryant is your nutritionist an actual registered dietitian?
It would be more so to eat some carbs, but there is a practical recommendation to eat a dinner near a few hours before bed to promote healthy sleep. Sleep will impact decision making the next day for future food choices. Plus, when a person gets less sleep, weight loss tends to come more from lean tissue instead of fat in comparison to weight loss by people getting more sleep.14 -

Like you, I'd basically never get to eat dinner with that advice, or would be forgoing my fun cooking and eating routine with eating at my desk or a protein bar (and while nothing wrong with protein bars, they are actually not worth the cals for me). Pretty much the whole time I was losing I got home around 8 (sometimes later, as I sometimes worked out after work) and then cooked and ate dinner around 9.
Unless you have a problem eating that close to bed (6 would not be close to bed for me), it sounds rather like non science based advice or a one-size-fits-all prescription that fails to take into account your particular circumstances. Especially if she claimed that going to bed without working off dinner would mean it turned right into fat, I'd think about whether her advice was really making sense overall.6 -
I've just recently started having dinner no earlier than 6 pm, in an attempt to eliminate mid-evening snack. So far, so good.9

From a logic standpoint, how would or could this even matter?
I'm rarely home by 6PM from the office and my wife and I usually eat dinner around 8:30PM...lost 40 Lbs pretty easily.3 -
I'm hoping you don't pay this nutritionist. The only thing that matters in weight management is calories. Meal timing is irrelevant and completely variable on your personal schedule.
I ingest >75% of my calories after 6 pm and lost 60 lbs - been in maintenance for 4 years now.7 -

Same. I don’t event eat lunch until 2ish most days and I’m not even hungry again before 7 or 8.0 -

How in the heck could anyone that works a 9-5 job, get home from work, prepare dinner and eat dinner before 6 pm? What is meant to happen to your body after 6 pm that will prevent it from digesting food as it did at 5:59?
The only reason meal timing is at all relevant to weight loss is in how it affects your satiety, mindless snacking, and how well you sleep.
This is why you should avoid seeing a nutritionist and see a registered dietician instead. You can call yourself a nutritionist with a short online course only.11 -

My opinion is that this rule is silly.
My experience is that losing weight does not rely on eating dinner before 6 pm.
I very very rarely eat dinner before 6 - most days I'm not even home from work till about then - and I never eat protein bars.
Lost to goal weight in 2013 and kept it off since.
I can see that for some people , not eating after x time is a helpful strategy - generally not eating after dinner, not the time in particular - because it helps them avoid mindless high calorie evening snacking in front of TV.
I do usually have a small snack after dinner as well, often about 9 or 10 pm - so not eating after dinner wasnt a neccesary rule for me.
But can see the logic for some people.
The thing is to recognise it as a strategy and then decide if it is useful to you, , rather than see it as a magic or compulsory rule

Eating after 6 pm is fine. It's 6:54 pm right now and dinner should be on the table about 7 pm. That's OK. Sometimes it can be as late as 7:30 or 8 pm. That's fine too!

I lost 125 lbs eating dinner as late as midnight. Sometimes I eat lunch after 6 pm. This rule is nonsense and has nothing to do with weight loss.
The main thing is to eat in a way which helps you to make appropriate choices. If eating too early tempts you to snack later, eat later. If eating too late makes you feel starving by the time you get around to eating, and as a result you consume too many calories, or if you are tired and have less willpower late in the day, eat earlier.3 -

Rather than studies or scientists, you to find the most yoked and shredded guy at the gym. He will be your brofessor - everything he says is what you know will work.
So start eating tilapia to thin the skin, live on protein powder and preworkout, never eat a bad carb after 6, except if you need it for one of 6 small meals to stroke the metabolic fire.15 -
I do try not to eat after 7pm, but that's really because I find it hard to stop snacking, so I'm better off eliminating it altogether.5

I pre-log and plan for a snack before bed. it's weighed and logged correctly to fit within my daily calorie allowance. can be smaller or bigger based on what i ate that day/how much exercise I did. Has not impacted my weight loss because it's about total calories in VS out
do you use a food scale? slow down in rate of loss is normal and good (you have less to lose) but if it slows down too much and you can still safely lose faster, it could be that there are errors in calculating calories in. Sometimes the estimates that worked when we had lots to lose and lots of wiggle room don't work anymore with less to lose. So we need to double check everything (weighin all foods, and double checking entries used)

Meal timing has nothing to do with weight loss. In fact, the notion of even naming meals is silly. I mean what is lunch? What is dinner? What is a snack? These are simply names given by society in order to try tell people when to eat. Breakfast is still breakfast whether its eaten at 8am or 1pm. Just eat when hungry and track calories. Oh and fire your nutritionist3

I've given up on this and just eat if I'm hungry. I don't think our metabolism slows down much at that time, and if you exercise and put in the work, your metabolism etc might be different anyhow. This is hard enough, give yourself a break sometimes0

I actually eat the majority of my calories after 6pm. I eat light during the day. I can't stand sleeping on an empty stomach so it's worked for me.4

I try not to eat after midnight, or I turn into a gremlin.9
