I think I'll be glad when October is over ... way, way too busy!! Every day has been full on and it continues right into the beginning of November.

Anyway, tonight, my husband and I went to the symphony ... it's something we do every so often. :) I especially wanted to go to this one because of the first piece:

Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain :smiley:

Anyone here ever had or know anyone who has had ocular migraines?? I’ve had them for quite some time and they’re annoying as crap.

KimUK - Yes it is harder after 50 or nearing it. I used to be able to lose pretty quickly/easily by increasing my protein intake significantly and counting calories. Once I turned 49ish, that did not work at all. So, I had to go extreme.

Lisa in AR - I also feel I'm higher risk of Alzheimer's due to genetics. Both grandmothers had some form of it. I also listened to that series about Alzheimer's someone posted here and I don't think there is anything else I can do to help prevent it other than try to sleep better. I have always struggled with sleeping and no matter what I try, it doesn't seem to get better. So I find it frustrating when people/doctors say "get more and better sleep." It's just not that simple.

The takeaways from the Alzheimer's series I have so far are:

    1. Don't be a woman. Women are twice as likely to show signs.
    2. Eat well. Give up processed/pre-packaged foods and white breads. Eat fresh fruits and veggies. Cook your own meals.
    3. Exercise at least 150 minutes per week, even if you have to break it up into 10 minute sessions.
    4. Control stress levels. High stress levels increase your risk.
    5. Don't have Type 2 Diabetes. If you have it, control it and try to reverse it. One of the highest risk factors.
    6. Get 7-9 hours of high quality sleep per night.
    7. Don't wait to start living healthier. It's never too late.

I also felt the series was kind of "elementary" and anyone who tries to live a healthier lifestyle will already be mitigating the risk. It's just interesting that no company is trying to find a cure, yet diagnoses are increasing quickly.

Still working on catching up on reading. I was visiting family for a week and didn't have time to check in.

I'm with you on both - glad when October's over, and love that piece. Of course, I got attached to it through Disney's Fantasia, but hey... whatever works. :) Most of my childhood memories of orchestral pieces were from either Disney or Bugs Bunny. "Ride of the Valkyries" comes to mind. :)

Raccoons 🦝 y me are at war. Have been at it trying to make them move on the 4ft male has 4!!! 4 Females!!! No nope no babies will be ridiculous the new females are more destructive than him. So not allowed trapping or poison or lots of other things websites suggest. Hubby said if my way fails he may get y pay an exspensive exterminator to trap y release: ugghh like he won’t find his way back! Even dogs 🐕 have been known to travel states to get home.
    Vinegar,bleach,lemon juice,y smelly soap 🧼
Putting it everywhere They love to go sprinkled cinnamon all over in shed even. Chili peppers 🌶 in one spot. Yup trying to change their environment already they attacked a container filled with the bleach, vinegar, lemon juice y spices container I had layed out with a lid. Marking my territory! Even got cinnamon under rug y bleach smell concoction on top! Will see if they learn to love it or move on .Hoping neighbors homes with no smell will attract them lol be their problem

Weight same staying steady at the moment.

Christmas just need gift card for Daughter y I’m done ✅. Decided only 5 people get gifts this year since we did a lot for Birthdays. Dad pAnts, hubby rubber shoe mat,me closet organizer flat kind, baby toys to closet organizers,y Daughter last minute will grab a gift card or visa gift card.

Busy as can be Halloween unsure if we will go out or not so far past 4yrs.Unsure the game plan.

I get ocular migraines too. I go easy on caffeine and alcohol which prevents most of them, and just wait it out if one happens.

Debby - I have had 2 in my life. First time about 15 yrs ago I thought I was having a stroke but it subsided after about an hour. Called my optometrist and he said no worries. Had another a few years back, the zig zags started up again, also lasted maybe an hour.

Did you say you also had "regular" migraines? I used to get bad hormonal ones. Glad menopause ended them! B)

Ocular migraines I have had them. Stress has caused most of mine. I still get them once in awhile not much though..
Well I have never been so happy to be home and in my own bed as I do now..
City life is not for me..only good thing about that was I got lots of steps in
Mary nirv I really needed to be there as it is a marketing strategy that the drs need to buy into to get and get the training etc...
Lots on interesting info..but we both know how our Dr is,micromanaging and thumb on everyone.. these guys said treat your staff well, have fun social media is the way to go etc...
I dont know what he can or will implement. But fir a start if he has me doing any of it ,is a raise and more hours.
Been up since 3:30 this morning and have to work tomorrow. Then stay the week at Tom's house with the dogs....

Glad work week is over. Four day work weeks can often be worse than a regular one. Have pt scheduled for October 29. After I got home tonight I decided to go outside for a walk (I am missing my walks!). Knee was a bit bothersome but not too hateful. Limited myself to 30 minutes and walked much slower than my usual pace, but it was so nice to be outside moving. Don't think it did any damage and sitting around is just making me more stiff overall. Thankfully it is not constant pain, but will follow through with pt even if it is feeling somewhat better by then (it's been acting up off and on for a year).

Working on house chores tomorrow. Go to Columbus Sunday for a conference on Monday and Tuesday. Going over a day early so I can meet son and his gf for dinner and a visit. Even though he only lives an hour or so away, with his work schedule and social life I only see him every couple of months (although if I ever need anything he comes, I just try not to bother him).

Going to go into bed and watch the Ohio State game. Doubt I will stay up for the whole thing. Still worn out from food pantry last night. Got overheated and a bit sick afterwards, but it was worth it.

    Take care all,

Regarding dementia (including Alzheimer’s disease) ...

Regarding dementia (including Alzheimer’s disease), I just recently came across the information that there is a link between high homocysteine levels and dementia. You can read more about it in this article:

    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5836397/

This is particularly interesting (and worrying) to me because in conjunction with my genetic disorder MTHFR, I have a naturally high homocysteine level. Since that was discovered (during 2 weeks in hospital with DVT in 2009), I have been on the Vit Bs and Folic Acid and my homocysteine level has come down a bit.

I knew that MTHFR + a high homocysteine level put me at risk for cardiovascular issues, but didn't know it also put me at risk for dementia!

But the reason I came across that information is because I was looking up information on the relationship between brain injury and dementia. The jury is out on that and I image that is because it is very hard to tell.

Is the reason why my husband has shown me around the garden 3 days in a row, each time as though it was my first time seeing it, because of his brain injury ... or is he starting to develop dementia? I'm not even sure the neurologists could tell.

But meanwhile we do what we can ...
    https://www.dementia.org.au/about-dementia/dementia-research/reduction-and-prevention
    https://www.dementia.org.au/information/risk-factors
    https://yourbrainmatters.org.au/5-simple-steps

    Machka in Oz

And the WHO's (World Health Organisation) guidelines on preventing dementia ...
    https://www1.racgp.org.au/newsgp/clinical/who-releases-new-guidelines-on-preventing-dementia

    These include:
    • Physical activity
    • Stop smoking
    • Eat a health diet (they suggest a Mediterranean-type diet)
    • Stop drinking alcohol

They also suggest that keeping the brain active, maintaining a "normal" weight, and managing cholesterol and blood pressure, but these seem to be slightly less important than those first four things.

Interestingly ... out of curiosity I took a look at the list of PhD research projects that are available for applicants and there are a number of studies involving dementia.

I'm guessing that is because of The Island Project ... if you've looked into dementia, perhaps you've heard of it.

The ISLAND (Island Study Linking Ageing and Neurodegenerative Disease) Project
    https://islandproject.utas.edu.au/

Register your interest in the largest dementia prevention study in the world.
The Wicking Dementia Centre is a global research leader on the risk factors for dementia.
The Island Study Linking Ageing and Neurodegenerative Disease (ISLAND) Project will involve a range of studies that relate to understanding who is at most risk of dementia and how we can self-manage risk behaviours to build resilience to dementia.

Stopping enzyme could launch two-pronged attack on Alzheimer's
    20 September 2019
    https://qbi.uq.edu.au/article/2019/09/stopping-enzyme-could-launch-two-pronged-attack-alzheimers

"Queensland Brain Institute researchers have discovered that knocking out a dual-performing enzyme could launch a two-pronged attack against Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr Ramón Martínez-Mármol and Professor Frédéric A. Meunier from the Clem Jones Centre for Ageing Dementia Research found that targeting an enzyme that affects both the immune and nervous systems could combat the disease on two fronts."
