The recipe for losing weight seems so simple. Eat more broccoli and fewer candy bars. Walk more and sit less. Just say "No" to foods you didn't plan to eat. The difficult part is sticking to the plan.
That's what this thread is all about; We provide support and encouragement to each other in a world filled with distraction, temptation, and discouragement.
The name of the thread is "Women Ages 50+" but all women are welcome.
We share our successes and our challenges and reach out to each other. Some of have a lot to say and others are listeners. Some have been here for ages and others have just found us.

Scale Goals History:SW: 227 (Mar 2014) Worsening hip problem made weight loss imperative.27 July: 170.1 (after vacation)
Jan 2015: 220: -7lbs; Struggled on my own to lose that 7 lbs. Joined MFP on daughter's recommendation.
UGW: 153 (losing 1 lb per week)
Sept 2015: 189:✅ -38; Had my hip replacement op.
Oct 2016: 153:✅ -75: My lowest weight in a long time. It was a really struggle losing the final few lbs.
Nov 2016: 160:🤦🏼♀️ -68: A holiday and several family celebrations later.
Feb 2017: 164:🤦🏼♀️ -64 Christmas and more celebrations!
Aug 2017: 159.2:✅ -68.8 I seem to have reached an equilibrium around 160/5.
Jan 2018: 165: 😏 Still working on discarding that last 12 lbs.

Goal for September - Be lighter going out than I was going in. Nope, didn't make it. 1 pound heavier today than Sept. 1.
However - what I did do was continue to go to the gym faithfully five or six times each week (one week I only went four times, and was so utterly disappointed in myself that I surprised myself).
I also have finally learned to sleep an average of seven hours a night (think it has anything to do with exercise? )
Goal for October - Lose the weight I've gained, and hold the gains I've made in self-care, including exercise and sleep habis.13 -

You can use Quick Tools to populate a week or more ahead (called "pre-logging"). I often do this because I eat very similar things each day. Pre-logging helps me stay within my calories because I can choose to not eat something I've prelogged if I don't have enough calories for it ... or I can choose to have something extra if I do!
Have a play with the different menu options and settings as well.
After using several other similar tools, from my experience, MFP is the best I've seen. Yes, it has some issues, but overall, it is pretty good. And I like that the foods aren't all USA.

Lisa – Coleus in general do not like cold. Yours are against the house, which might help you could do a clear but thick plastic cover over them, don’t lay it on the plants but have them completely enclosed, and attached to the ground like a skirt. You might still loose them. But a cutting brought in and used as a winter house plant then planted out after the last frost should work.
Rita – that is great news! On both the less expensive RX and that triggers are food you don’t want anyway.
The world according to Kim has been pretty busy lately and had some challenges that I find difficult.
My bio-family is at its best dysfunctional and at it’s worse toxic and dangerous – they have been trying my patience, I keep lots of distance but step in to keep my 91 year old mom physically safe (she is fully with it and if she is emotionally abused there is nothing I can do to solve that – as she is completely unwilling to see it acknowledge it or even accept that emotional abuse is abuse in the greater sense). I will also step in to keep my nephews safe. The 2 half brothers (my nephews) went to an outdoor 2 day rap music festival and had their latest and greatest iphones stolen? Lost? Whatever they are missing! All of the parents when into accusatory hate mode. Verbal hate and threats came pouring out. At one point I think there were un-acknowledged contests going to see who could say the meanest thing to one of the kids. GRR!!! With some careful texting I got the parent who pays the cell phone bill to have the new phones shipped to me, and I delivered them to the kids, the parent thought I was doing a favor to their team, but the reality was I was just protecting the kids.
The new company who runs the camp I work at has rolled out the new budget and it is appalling. Our camp’s reputation is based on quality of cabins, food, and ecological studies. They cut the food budget by 65% so now per child per day the budget is just under $5. That’s for 3 full meals and a snack and we are in CA where the costs are astronomical. I put my head together will the chef and am going to try to convert the garden from a demonstration garden with overflow to the chef to an urban farm, with the goals of quantity of production to be much higher. This will be a huge challenge. I will be working on adding volunteers as I can not add hours. Luckily I have been for 3 years working on stream lining the processes in hopes of more food for less of my time. I’ll be ramping that process up.
And the embroidery has hit a tipping point where I am finding it hard to keep up. – when it rains it pours, I do love it all though.

Kim, your equanimity under pressure never ceases to amaze. I want to be just like you when I grow up.
My council is reeling after yet another abrupt departure, basically the second in command, our chief operating officer. In this last month, alone, we've lost our camps director, our volunteer engagement director, and now the COO. Turnover has edged up to 40% just since I've been here. I'm supposed to meet with the CEO tomorrow, but have a feeling that may be cancelled.
Interesting days ahead.

Hello everyone! I am pretty new here. I have only been on this journey to healthy for about 3 weeks. Been a yoyo dieter my whole life. Facing some serious health issues has spurred me on to get healthy. My SW 247lbs. CW 238ish lbs. Been bouncing arund 238 for a little bit. I always hit this spot get frustrated and fall off the wagon. I am trying very hard to stay focused this time. And it's very hard to do!

Barbara – I honestly don’t remember if I dissolved the gelatin or not. I would think that it should be dissolved first. Can’t hurt, just don’t know if it would dissolve if you didn’t use warm water. I would think that a blender would be OK. It just barely fits into my food processor. Good luck! Happy Anniversary! Vince doesn’t like to go out to dinner for our anniversary, either
M – I’m using my computer mostly to log my foods here at MFP. I think a lot of it is just jogging this old brain of mine…lol I think I have most things figured out around now. I need to play around and figure out how to prelog a few days in the future.

Have to laugh. We play Rummikub with the Newcomers (which I’m in charge of). One member has secured the clubhouse where she lives. It’s just a convenient location. Plus, there is room for lots of people, at least 16. We usually have around 10-12. Well, a while ago Adra said “Newcomers isn’t going to supply paper goods for activities that are held in member’s homes.” Well, the clubhouse isn’t a home. I had one other gal bring it to the board (as Adra told me to do) and they agreed that they’ll give the supplies when it’s held at the clubhouse. Well, Adra just told me that the gal who secures the clubhouse won’t be there in November (she’d told me that she was but I guess things have changed) and that Adra knows that people want to host in their homes. Well, most people have said that they don’t want to host in their homes because they don’t have the room. So I’m just going to go along with this, looking for a host for the clubhouse in October and someone to host in their home in November. This should be interesting to see if anyone hosts in their home in November. Personally, I really don’t care, I do like it at the clubhouse, tho.

I don't like it when someone shares a big problem or worry and then doesn't tell us when the problem is resolved, so in case anyone was wondering what happened about my phone that couldn't connect to the charging cord, the problem has been solved by a $15.00 charger that you lay your phone on. It came from Amazon this afternoon. I had been very careful with phone usage for two days and the battery was down to 9%. Now it is charging happily.
I use my phone as a timer to time my rides on the stationary bike, to map my walks with the dogs, to count steps, to listen to audio books while I walk, and to read an e book in the dark in the middle of the night after the midnight doggie potty break. Sometimes I use it to text or make and receive phone calls.
The bathroom remodel continues and looks better every day. We are so happy with the decision to do this.
I walked for an hour this morning with a friend I hadn't seen in a very long time.

Glad your phone is better Barbie, and is charging happily! Our phone situation is interesting to say the least. When we moved to our home in May, we had Xfinity come to connect phone, internet and cable bundle. Well when he opened the phone box there was a note that said " wiring is faulty". Something about every phone jack in a daisy chain thing. If one doesn't work, none work. So we have a modem upstairs the the internet can connect to, and there is a phone plug in it. We first plugged in the phone with the answering machine but we couldn't hear it downstairs. So then we plugged in our 1957 black rotary phone and we can hear that thing no problem. The only issue is that we can't dial out with the rotary phone because it doesn't have an adapter on it. Its pretty funny because when we do get a call we have to hoof it upstairs and down the hallway! Nothing like answering and not gasp into the phone like a stalker! Most of my family all know to let it ring! I don't own a phone, but just this fire tablet.👍

-- attending a whole pile of different physio appointments and other medical appointments. I really need to make a dentist appointment!!! There is not a single week without a medical appointment of some sort.
-- and continuing to organise, as follows ...
Make things easier on yourselves by ...
-- making sure all affairs are in order. 2 names on all accounts, enduring power of attorney, bills, wills, taxes, paperwork, whatever it takes.
-- making sure you're fit and healthy. Being fit and healthy improves the odds. Also could you actually support and lower your partner to the ground, should he/she collapse? Do you know first aid?
-- making sure your house well set up. Are there stairs? Tight corners? Difficult showers?
-- having a look at options around you. What would you do for groceries? What if you couldn't drive? If you have never used public transportation, try it now while you're still able. What about things like doctor's offices? Hospitals? All the stuff you use? Is it scattered around and difficult to get to or quite convenient?
--making sure you've got resources. Do you have people who can offer assistance? Knowledge of who to call if you've got problems with the house? Do you know about services in your area which can help?

Just a little bit of background ... in March 2018 I was suddenly thrown into the position of not knowing if my husband was going to live or die, and if he lived, not knowing whether he'd ever return to a place where he could recognise what was going on around him and be able to talk, make decisions, etc.
When I was with my first husband, I handled everything ... but I didn't mind a bit when my current husband handled everything. It was a break for me. Until all of a sudden I didn't know what bills needed to be paid, or how to pay them ... and I discovered I didn't have access to all the accounts ... and that if he died without a will, I could potentially lose half of our money to his previous family ...
I spent weeks digging through files on his computers and paper files, and going to banks, and ringing banks etc. etc. trying to put it all together.
I kept thinking ... "they never mention this on TV murder mystery shows when someone dies. Usually the surviving family appears mildly upset and then seems to carry on with their lives. They don't show the surviving wife weeping over a file box because she can't find information and is coming close to having the power turned off or losing the house because the rent isn't paid."
So, now that my husband can participate again (not 100% but better than expected), we are working on getting things in order. And I worry about what would happen to him if I passed away.

Surprisingly Joe volunteered to take me out to dinner Thursday for our anniversary (32 yrs married, 35 together, now how the heck did that happen?). He usually resists mightily, maybe a little cabin fever is a good thing. The Dr called and postponed Joe's physical so WE won't go in til the end of October. SMH but gratefully for these changes of mind.

But I have noticed (when watching US shows on TV) two other phrases that amuse me for some reason ...
"Go ahead and ..." As in ... "I'm just going to go ahead and do this". "I'm just going to go ahead and open your suitcase to look for ... " etc.
And ...
"Today" ... as in "Do you know why we've pulled you over today?" "I'm just going to go ahead and open your suitcase today". "Today" at the end of every other sentence.
Maybe now I'll watch for ... "Thank you for reaching out to us. We're going to go ahead and refund your money for those shoes today".

Next I'm working on the instruction book for that process and considering options to streamline the process and make it easier. So far the instruction book is 49 pages long. It's a BIG process.
-- attending uni ... I will finish my current course this month, and start the next one next month. Only 2 more lectures to go in this current course. I think there are only 2 more tutorials too, but I'm not 100% sure about that.

-- attending a whole pile of different physio appointments and other medical appointments. There is not a single week without a medical appointment of some sort. I need to make a dental appointment, doctor appointment for a complete physical, and pop into my optometrist ... but when??
-- and continuing to organise. If all goes well, October will be tax month because we should have everything done by October 31. October 31 is Canada's April 30 when it comes to taxes. November will be insurance & pension month. And December ... we'll see. Maybe all the remaining bits and pieces.

Happy October! (Insert falling leaf emojis here). We are only 6 hours from home but DH is still sleeping so I can visit with you all. Where did September go?
Goals for this month:
• get outside to do small amount of backyard work when I get home from work every day it isn’t raining
• order the treadmill already!
• continue journaling and adjusting how you handle your emotions and reactions about work.
We will be driving the road less travelled home cause DH hates the highways (toll roads lol) so I hope to pass farmers markets for some wonderful autumn fruits and veggies on the way home.

Welcome to October!
I love this time of year. The colors, the smells, the food, the comfortable temperatures, and a whole lot more. Many say Florida does not have seasons, but if you’re here long enough one begins to see and feel them. The seasons are subtle, but they do exist.
Barbara – Thank you for starting the October thread. You’re posts are motivating and enlightening.
Lisa – I am not sure what your weight-loss goals may be since I am new to the group. You’re keeping up with the gym and working out plus all of the work at the new home is probably resulting in more muscle and less fat. Have you taken your measurements lately? It may be an alternative to the scale. You may be losing inches. I am finding the inch loss is just as motivating, if not more than weight loss.
Machka – Thank you for the Quick Tools tips. I plan my meals weekly and have been finding it a chore to keep adding the same foods/dishes. The tips will certainly make it much quicker!
Kim – I so relate to you and your dysfunctional family. I am sending positive thoughts and support in your attempt to keep your distance while attempting to protect your mom. In my early 20’s I moved further and further away but still got sucked back in to the drama. When I moved to Florida I found they only included me in the drama when it was big. It was the only way I found I could nurture myself and grow. I give you kudos as I would have floundered, if I had stayed in close proximity. My mom also refused to acknowledge the co-dependency within the family. I find your strength amazing.
Kelli – Welcome. I am new too and have found this group to be extremely supportive and motivating. My story is a little different than yours. I am a get healthy every decade person. I hit my goals, stay maintained, give up logging my food and after a period of time find I am almost at the 200 mark. Some tips I can give you is to love yourself, make one small change a week/month/whatever period you choose, log in daily and log your food no matter how “bad” the day may seem, and most of all remember a bad moment is only a bad moment.

Speaking of updates, there is an update on Josephine the Ballerina. The pathologists have had a second look at the tumor and believe it may be sarcoma rather than neuroblastoma, which makes more sense based on the MRI findings. They sent slides off to Sloan Kettering and began chemotherapy while they wait for a definitive answer (hopefully). The good news is, sometimes there is a dramatic response to chemotherapy in tumors of this nature in children. I choose to believe that will be the case for our friend's child. She is so adorable. Here is the most recent photo. Please keep Josephine in your hearts (and prayers if you pray).

I had a nice long post going, the PC decided to burp so you all are spared. For now.
Barbie - thanks for getting us revved up for a successful October. This spoke to me: The recipe for losing weight seems so simple. Eat more broccoli and fewer candy bars. Walk more and sit less. Just say "No" to foods you didn't plan to eat. The difficult part is sticking to the plan.
Terri - I am borrowing your October goals. That list fits me perfectly.
Machka - thank you for your links on computer cleaning and the love list I was curious about the "reaching out" v. "contacting" so did an internet search. Looks like lots of folks are puzzled by this new phrase.
My other October goal is to get going again on the Strong Women Stay Young strength training and morning stretching. My hips and knees are grumbling a little lately and that's why I started the SWSY several years ago (thank you Barbie!). Will be starting over with really light weights.

SW WA State where it's 31f degrees out and I see my trumpet vine wasn't put in DH's shop last night He did place it under the lean-to however. I just went out and threw a little floating row cover over it. Crossing fingers.

September goals:
Exercise up
weight down (by five pounds)
water up (gurgle, gurgle)
assessments for the kids done (need to be reviewed with parents)
October goals:
100 miles walked for month of October (a completely do-able challenge for me)
24 hours of strength and resistance for October (another reasonable challenge for me)
assessments reviewed with parents
get renewal/group paperwork completed and submitted (still waiting for zoning approval)
continue with water intake and healthy food choices

I wonder if it is an attempt at a gentler approach.
I suspect that's what "go ahead" and "today" are ... instead of "I'm going to do this", it's "I'm going to go ahead and do this" ... perhaps a softer approach??
Maybe "reaching out" is the same sort of thing.

Kim ... a reduction in food budget like you are facing sounds impossible ... wonder how the parents of these children would react if they knew about a "cut" like that ...
I have now been at a weight plateau for four months and do not like it as I have significant weight yet to lose. Stress and interrupted sleep have contributed I am sure. But, in honesty, my food choices have been atrocious.
October Goals: Maintain 19:5 (which is the only thing I have done consistently through the plateau), restart CICO, be consistent with exercise (treadmill and kettle bell), monitor water intake (suspect I'm dehydrated as I forget to drink while fasting as well), regain mental equilibrium.
Younger son is in a downward spiral with his migraines and anxiety/depression ... the cause of my stress and interrupted sleep and crappy eating. I am powerless to help him. Besides being 700 miles away, he needs to figure this out on his own. But I can't help but be worried about so many things ...

Low on the "I'm having a bad day" scale, but still one of those things that had me murmuring ... "Why??"
My usual grocery store has decided not to stock a favourite single serve yogurt.
After my lecture, I stopped in at a different grocery store and found them. I bought three 6-packs.
It was warm out, so I popped my jacket into the grocery bag and continued my walk to the bus.
When I got on the bus it was completely full so I ended up standing at the front all the way home. I tossed my phone in the bag too because I needed to hang on.
We rolled into my "town/suburb" and stopped at the first stop, the door swung open and caught my bag behind it with a bit of a "slam".
When the door closed I was able to rescue it but couldn't look because the bus was plunging down a hill and I was still standing and had to hang on ... but I started to smell yogurt.
Yep ... one exploded. All over my jacket and phone.
When we get into the middle of town, I usually send a text to my husband to let him know I'm in town and will be at my bus stop soon. Great. Very carefully I managed to flick my phone cover open, and start it ... but I'm doing this, standing holding a bag full of yogurt with one of them all over the place, so it was a slippery and tricky business to get that text off. I had yogurt everywhere by the time I was done ... my pants, the pole I was hanging onto, up my arm, probably in my hair ...
Fortunately the jacket is just a lightweight one I could wash in the sink ... and my phone cover is drying now ... and I don't think anything got into my phone because it still works.
But that's one of those things we just don't need in life!!

i applied at an old job of mine i got laid off from there 13 yrs go
I still have good years left in me and i would get benefits too.. it would be first shift so 7-3 and maybe overtime, so we shall see13 -
